This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

As with any good epic, herein lies the promise of larger-than-life experiences, heroics, and twists and turns as the adventure unfolds. This bottle conditioned ale is chapter five, and is specifically designed to be aged until sometime after December 12th, 2012. Provided you can wait that long. At that time, enjoy it in a "vertical" tasting along with its ten Stone Vertical Epic Ale brethren. Each on unique to its year of release. Each with its own "twist & turn" in the plot line. Each one release one year, one month and one day from the previous year’s edition.

In this year’s edition, you’ll notice a deep, rich aroma of toasty malts, anise, Belgian yeast spiciness, and a hint of cedar. The toasty, dark and roasty malt flavors combine with a soft palate - courtesy of specialty dark wheat and barley malts. The body is fairly light for a beer with such a high gravity. There is a pleasant, lingering bitterness, so you know it’s part of the Stone family. This ale was brewed with a specialty Belgian yeast that we’re really liking here at Stone...it’s the same one we used for brewing the Stone 03.03.03 Vertical Epic Ale. And as with the Stone 05.05.05 Vertical Epic Ale, all the spicy, deep, and wonderfully funky aromas and flavor characteristics in this beer come as a result of nothing more than malt, hops, water and yeast!

Drank on my birthday which coincidentally is 6/6. It's held up pretty well I'd say although I never drank it prior to today.
Wasn't expecting it to be roasty and dark but I'm not sure what my expectations were in the first place. Solid drinker for what it is and how old it is.
Received this in a trade only because I wanted the bottle. But happy that the beer was still worth drinking.

Pours a dark brown color, free of sediment and looks like a stout or BSDA. Head retention is low and no lace to find. The aroma had some dark fruits and chocolate, some soy coming through as well. The flavor consisted of anise, chocolate, soy, plum and raisin. There was a roasted quality to the malts. Alcohol was there. Full bodied with a medium to low carbonation. Overall this was a cool beer but was probably best fresh like most beer. (447 characters)

Had this sometime at the end of 2012, as part of a 03.03.03 - 12.12.12 tasting. I had meant to enter these a while ago while they were fresh and add a few extra details, but that didn't happen. Review from notes. Anyway, here we go.

3.0 A: Black color. Not much of a head formed.

2.5 S: Smells like a spicy, well diluted nail polish. Despite this description, it's not that horrible. Caramel, toast, light roastiness, and chocolate.

2.0 T: Like the nose, but more boring. Toasty, caramel, roast. Less nail polish, but just boring.

3.0 M: Medium body. Lighter carbonation, but decent here.

2.5 D: Not horrible, but not good or even decent. (658 characters)

Poured from a bomber into an enlarged snifter.

Appearance: Pours pretty much black and gives a tan head of a finger. A layer of tan is left around the rim of the glass (4.25)

Smell: Some nice must, licorice, dark chocolate, plums, figs, roasted malts, hint of molasses. Nice, balanced aroma. (4.25)

Taste: Big raisins, figs, licorice, plenty of dark chocolate, butterscotch, vanilla, molasses. Good amount of sweetness. This beer has held up pretty well. Nice and smooth. (4.25)

Mouth-feel: Low carbonation (but present) with a medium, creamy body. Super smooth finish. (4.5)

Overall: I'm definitely pleasantly surprised with this beer. It has held up really well and is a very tasty, well brewed beer. On the sweeter side, but just barely. Nice licorice, dark chocolate, and dark fruits in the flavor profile. (4.3) (821 characters)

poured into a Stone snifter

A- pours a nearly opaque black color with a small fizzy off white head that reduces quickly, leaving just a ring behind

S- peppery spice with a plethora of fruity sweetness, caramelized malt, light char, toasted bread, fig, lots of dark fruit

T- tons of dark fruity notes up front; fig, prune raisin. Caramel malt gives it a big sweetness, with notes of chocolate. Belgian spices add notes of must and peppery flavor, the finish is sweet with lingers of dark cherry and chocolate

M- medium body and carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a smooth finish, just a hint of alcohol warmth on the finish

O- this has held up amazingly well, the spicy and fruity yeast flavors mix nicely with the chocolate/caramel malt. Very well done! (770 characters)

A - This beer is very dark with just the slightest of ruby light coming through. It is topped with a couple inches of tan head.

S - I first notice some hints of anise. Some Belgian spices are coming through.

T - The anise is more noticeable in the taste as are the spices.

M - Medium

O - This is a mellow beer. I assume it would have been pretty spicy fresh. It is a decent beer but not one that I would seek. (463 characters)

Nice dark fluid with a light brown head. Not much carbonation visible. Decent lacing. Smell is dark malts and dark fruits.

Some Belgian yeast and light woody notes. Raisin, plum, figs give a nice aroma to blend with the caramel and sweet dark bread. Touch of earth in the hops.

Flavor is big and smooth, with a slight vinous undercurrent. Malt front is followed quickly by a nice combination of spices. Firm earthiness gives a nice dry finish.

Feel is rich and smooth. Velvety with a nice weight and carbonation. Easy drinking for this big a beer.

4oz draft pour into a tulip glass.

A: Obsidian color with a thin mocha head.

S: A bit of plum and rum raisin in the nose, but smells were faint.

T: Lots of plum, raisin, fruit cake flavors, with the fruit sweetness being more apparent than spice.

M: Super juicy and sweet mouthfeel.

O: Not bad, but too much fruit juiciness and lacking in aromas and taste categories. (377 characters)

a bottle of this got opened at big beers in vail last night, and i was stoked to see it because i somehow missed this one despite it being quite prevalent even last year when we lined up a few of them. much more straightforward than some others, just a belgian strong ale here. cool yeast has dried this out a lot over time. far less residual sugar than it may have originally had, but still a light honey finish. really dig the mellowness of the alcohol too, its barley there, and while the carbonation and body are both less than where id like to see them, i think this has aged with grace. a full bomber would not be too much, as the layers of spice continually improve and unfold with temperature. a very well made beer, not full of additives, something they should probably make regularly honestly. maybe a new winter seasonal? (832 characters)

So I've amassed VE's 6-12. Thought I would take them to a tasting, but doubt that will ever happen, so I guess now is the time to drink 'em….

A: A very dark brown, but not quite black. Forms a moderate sized, creamy, dark tannish colored head that slowly reduces to a thin, patchy surface coating. Moderate amount of lacing.

S: Not overly aromatic, but what is there is roasted malts, dark fruits, prunes, and a bit of alcohol.

T: Taste is better than I was expecting on this one. The beer has a moderate sweetness to it. Notes of smoke, raisin, and dark fruits. Coffee on the back end.

M: Medium bodied. Nearly flat.

O: A decent drink. Wasn;t expecting this one to hold up. (685 characters)

Seven year old Six had a murky brownie like darkness with a foamy cap.

The aroma was phenolic alcohol with a moderate raisin scent.

The flavor was nicely surprising as it had a smoky tone of peppercorn, cola and some dried fruit.

The feel is very sprite and effervescent with a superb crispness.

This turned out to be a bit lacking in complexity but a nice drinking beer. (375 characters)

Bottle from John’s Market.

A: Dark mahogany bordering on black. Thick creme head. Nice lacing.

N: Anise, licorice, clove, some oxidation. Touch of esters and a hint of cocoa.

T: Oxidized, but it’s not over the top. Plenty of bitterness left and there’s a moderate touch of sweetness. Going slightly sour.

M: Medium body; slightly sticky. Alcohol is well hidden.

O: Has held up pretty well, all things considered. Drinkable with a nice Belgian influence (467 characters)

Dark brown with a ruby glint in the light, spotty lace around the edges, patchy surface skim. Good lasting coverage.

Weird sharp aroma, as it warms there's some vague traces of dark fruit. Tart astringent taste, tangy. Big notes of oxidation, light roast malt in the background. Must have been infected or aged too long, it's kind of gross at this point... drain pour. (508 characters)

Opened June 2013

A - Dark chocolate cranberry body. Thin, off-white head sits low but has nice retention and lace.

S - Touch of old wood. Dark dried fruits; cherry, fig, raisin, apricot. Almonds. Smooth chocolately booze. Black cherry soda. Rum cake.

T - Hard wood, iced coffee, hazel nut, tart cherries. Dark fruits, light and mellow scotch, cherry chocolate cordials.

M - Medium-light body. Solid carbonation. Touch of water on the finish.

O - A solid offering that held up well after 7 years. (502 characters)

Poured into a Due South Brewing Co. snifter.

A- Pours a mostly opaque black color with a 1/4 inch tan head that retains decently before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and wispy specs of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing.

S- Very unique aroma of sweet Belgian candi sugar, spice and mildly roasted malt. Also a bit of anise.

T- More sweetness with the candi sugar playing a main role up against the malty backdrop. Has a nice balance with some ginger-like spice in the finish. Notes of clove, cinnamon and black licorice.

M- Slightly viscous with medium carbonation and a fullish body.

O- This is a classy Belgian that's held up well in the bottle with no noticeable oxidation or skunking in the aroma or taste. After having four different entries of the series, I'm beginning to see the underlying trend and realizing I like it. There's only been one that I've disliked so far and it was the 12.12.12 but, hey, maybe it just needs some age since I had it fresh. (991 characters)

Had on tap at Brouwers on 12/12/12, review from notes.

A: Pours brown with a small off-white head with minimal retention and no lacing.

S: Some red wine like tannins, a bit of cinnamon, chocolate and peppers.

T: A good bit of smoke mixed with caramel, cinnamon, cocoa, and a little bit of dark fruit.

M: Medium bodied with low carbonation.

O: Not bad, but nothing special either. It was middle of the road in terms of my 3-12 rankings. (443 characters)

A- Pours a dark brown color with a light tan head with good retention and lacing.

S- The aroma is sweet malt with cocoa, dark fruits, and Belgian yeast.

T- The taste like the aroma is malty up front with a spiciness coming through and some hops and yeast in the spicy and bitter finish.

M- The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a slightly above average amount of carbonation.

O- Overall, this one is still holding strong after almost 7 years. I bought it in 2007 and have held on to it since. (510 characters)

(A)- Pours a near pitch black color. Some tan froth and lacing formed.

(S)- Kind of a dry, chalky roast to it, almost like coffee. . almost, but more in an herbal cocoa and raisin (if that makes any sense).

(T)- Lots of raisin, prune, and cocoa. Definitely the cocoa turns slightly more towards sweet chocolate as it warmed.

(M)- A good carbonation level. This has some nice richer elements to this. Still kind of chalky overall, but not as bothersome as some of the earlier vertical epics that I think were well past their prime.

(O)- This might be my favorite so far in the lineup. It still has a subtle richness to with that has not fallen off yet. (738 characters)

Think I got this at Discount Liquor. Served in a tulip.

A - Dark tan foam settles to a solid cap, leaving behind splotches of lace. Dark brown body, with ruby-brown highlights. Looks pretty good actually!

S - Roasted malts, cedar, fruity oxidation, perhaps the first trace of Belgian yeast remaining in any of these beers. Not as sweet as previous vintages.

T - The taste is quite strange - an understated mix of smoke, roasted malts, and vinous notes, as well as the expected oxidation. The advertised anise is long gone.

M - Medium-full body, pleasant carbonation, chewy texture, and a dry and lightly smokey finish.

D - My least favorite so far. Even worse than 03.03.03. At least in the preceding ones the the oxidation flavors had overwhelmed the original ones - here it's an unholy blend of oxidation and vestigial, largely unpleasant, flavors. (855 characters)

Reviewed from notes a few weeks back (02/02/13) for all the VE series I could obtain.

A- Poured from the bottle to a pint glass. Very dark brown body with some red around the edges. Nice head for 6.5 years old. The cap is one finger in height with a light tan-toast color and decent retention. A few creamy lace patches.

S- Definite oxidation rustiness but not terribly so. Some spice and caramel, tiny dry roast but hard to pick up overall.

T- Really thinned out and dried out flavor. Slight roast but no real depth to it. Just like a light roast grain husk. Brown toasted malts, raisin spice and some oxidation but not as much as the nose. Some dark fruits.

MF- Thinned out like crazy. Lower end carbonation with somewhat watery feel, not unexpected. Slight warming from alcohol and spicy bitterness.

Solid brown-amber Belgian hybrid, some of this probably due to the age. Not overly affected by age but it shows. Gets better with warmth. (945 characters)

A: Pours a dark brown color with a light brown head forming on the pour. Some splotches of lace are left behind.

S: Boozy, some sweet malts and fruity notes as well. An odd minty note on the finish, reminiscent of toothpaste.

T: Brandy soaked plum, some anise and a ton of booze. Light roast with herbal mint qualities on the finish. Not as noticeable as the nose.

M: Medium bodied with a medium low carbonation level. Herbal and roasty finish.

O: The odd minty and toothpaste like flavors on the finish detracted from an overall decent beer. (586 characters)

The first in a Vertical Epic tasting - 06 to the 12 back to back, very awesome. Thanks to Cam for this one.

Dark brown body with some clarity there. Beige head is small but retains well.

Scent shows it age a bit, some oxidation and rustiness there, along with spice, yeast, dark fruits.

Taste is an improvement, there is some oxidation here as well but it doesn't really deter. Dark fruits, caramelly malts, musty Belgian yeast, spice, some licorice.

A thinnish mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Solid for the age.

A solid dark Belgian that had held up decently being close to 7 years old. Nothing groundbreaking here but good. (634 characters)

I was fortunate to try this last night at an epic tasting held by my good friend Mike, thanks for the opportunity MrBarleywine!
Pours a slightly hazy deep garnet color with a smallish off white head that dissipates fairly quickly. The aroma is sweet caramel, chocolate, roast and cinnamon with a light woody aroma.The flavor follows the aroma quite well. Sweet and sugary with caramel, chocolate, and cocoa with hints of spice and fruit. The finish is fairly dry, but leaves a long lingering chocolate and roast bite on the palette. Medium to light body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet mouthfeel. I liked this one quite a bit. (644 characters)

Consumed on January 20th, 2013 at a private Vertical Epic tasting.

This beer pours a clear, dark brown with no head and virtually no bubbles rising in the glass.

The aroma is sweet, almost syrupy. No other character noted.

Flavor is dark roasted malts with a hint of thin, bitter coffee, a touch of treacle character and a cedar note.

Mouthfeel is thin and still.

All together with me now: this was much better fresh. (423 characters)

Stone Vertical Epic Glass, avoided the yeast sediment for the first pour

Pours a very dark but not opaque brown. The edges of the beer show deep red and bronze.

Smell is strong. Smells lightly alcoholic with vanilla and pungent vegetables. Also smells like strong dark rye bread.

Tastes like earthy malt, tea, and toasty bran muffins.

Very smooth, clean feel that is nearly flat on carbonation. (398 characters)
