This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

As with any good epic, herein lies the promise of larger-than-life experiences, heroics, and twists and turns as the adventure unfolds. This bottle conditioned ale is chapter five, and is specifically designed to be aged until sometime after December 12th, 2012. Provided you can wait that long. At that time, enjoy it in a "vertical" tasting along with its ten Stone Vertical Epic Ale brethren. Each on unique to its year of release. Each with its own "twist & turn" in the plot line. Each one release one year, one month and one day from the previous year’s edition.

In this year’s edition, you’ll notice a deep, rich aroma of toasty malts, anise, Belgian yeast spiciness, and a hint of cedar. The toasty, dark and roasty malt flavors combine with a soft palate - courtesy of specialty dark wheat and barley malts. The body is fairly light for a beer with such a high gravity. There is a pleasant, lingering bitterness, so you know it’s part of the Stone family. This ale was brewed with a specialty Belgian yeast that we’re really liking here at Stone...it’s the same one we used for brewing the Stone 03.03.03 Vertical Epic Ale. And as with the Stone 05.05.05 Vertical Epic Ale, all the spicy, deep, and wonderfully funky aromas and flavor characteristics in this beer come as a result of nothing more than malt, hops, water and yeast!

biegaman was nice enough to share this one with me. thanks jan!

pours a deep red brown with some ruby highlights. fine tan head that quickly drops to a ring around the glass

aroma is nice. slightly sweet candi sugar like aroma. pumpernickle bread. a bit of spice.

taste is good. nice bready malt, just a hint of residual sweetness. a little belgian funk to it that's kind of nice. spicy, maybe corriander. touch of licorice.

mouthfeel is good. pretty dry, nice carbonation level.

drinkability is great. really easy drinking brew that i'd love to have available all the time.

(A)- Pours a near pitch black color. Some tan froth and lacing formed.

(S)- Kind of a dry, chalky roast to it, almost like coffee. . almost, but more in an herbal cocoa and raisin (if that makes any sense).

(T)- Lots of raisin, prune, and cocoa. Definitely the cocoa turns slightly more towards sweet chocolate as it warmed.

(M)- A good carbonation level. This has some nice richer elements to this. Still kind of chalky overall, but not as bothersome as some of the earlier vertical epics that I think were well past their prime.

(O)- This might be my favorite so far in the lineup. It still has a subtle richness to with that has not fallen off yet.

Reviewed from notes a few weeks back (02/02/13) for all the VE series I could obtain.

A- Poured from the bottle to a pint glass. Very dark brown body with some red around the edges. Nice head for 6.5 years old. The cap is one finger in height with a light tan-toast color and decent retention. A few creamy lace patches.

S- Definite oxidation rustiness but not terribly so. Some spice and caramel, tiny dry roast but hard to pick up overall.

T- Really thinned out and dried out flavor. Slight roast but no real depth to it. Just like a light roast grain husk. Brown toasted malts, raisin spice and some oxidation but not as much as the nose. Some dark fruits.

MF- Thinned out like crazy. Lower end carbonation with somewhat watery feel, not unexpected. Slight warming from alcohol and spicy bitterness.

Solid brown-amber Belgian hybrid, some of this probably due to the age. Not overly affected by age but it shows. Gets better with warmth.

Had during a tasting of 06-10 VE's.
Poured to NB globe.

A: Pours a dark brown, nearly perfectly opaque ale. Single finger light tan head dissipates quickly. Little lacing here.

S: Molasses, molasses, molasses, anise, mineralic qualities. Very complex, dark malts with belgian yeast greets the nose with dark fruits which are quite subdued by the original approach of molasses feel. Cocoas dance here as well.

T: The molasses and dark fruits continue here. Malts, anise, cocoas. Wow, delicioso!

M: Heavy, viscous with low carbonation. Great feel for this beer. Sticky, resonant, smooth.

D: This beer was second only to 09.09.09 on the lineup. It was fantastic! I wish I had more of this beer around to drink for sure.

So I've amassed VE's 6-12. Thought I would take them to a tasting, but doubt that will ever happen, so I guess now is the time to drink 'em….

A: A very dark brown, but not quite black. Forms a moderate sized, creamy, dark tannish colored head that slowly reduces to a thin, patchy surface coating. Moderate amount of lacing.

S: Not overly aromatic, but what is there is roasted malts, dark fruits, prunes, and a bit of alcohol.

T: Taste is better than I was expecting on this one. The beer has a moderate sweetness to it. Notes of smoke, raisin, and dark fruits. Coffee on the back end.

M: Medium bodied. Nearly flat.

O: A decent drink. Wasn;t expecting this one to hold up.

A 22 ounce bomber bottle poured into my Duvel tulip glass. The ale appears a nearly opaque dark crimson brown color with two fingers of ecru foam. The head lingers for a few minutes before settling down to a thin layer. Nose and flavor consist of rich toasted and caramelized malts, star anise, bittersweet chocolate, spicy Belgian yeast, cocoa dusted raisins, prune notes, pleasantly bitter hops. There is still a bit of alcohol, but it's burn is more than tolerable. A little lighter in body than I was expecting with ample carbonation. Tasty and complex, I'd say this VE is aging nicely. If you have a few bottles, by all means, enjoy one soon.

Nice looker. Deep chestnut with a large tan head that takes a few minutes to fade into a foamy topper leaving behind some spotty lacing.

Belgian yeast, spice, earth, sassafrass, dried fruits of raisin, fig, and prune. Candy sugar with a bit of chocolate, toffee, some alcohol and some menthol that throw things off a little.

Nice beer not overly complex. Very much like the nose with the yeast standing out somewhat more in the mouth. More spicey with candy sugar and rum soaked peaches. The same raisiny, black fig, plum flavors come through with some berry, and quince. A bit of hop bitterness on the finish and a slighly creamy mouthfeel if not somewhat acrid and chalky. Finish is short and unappetizing. Nice beer that may get better but not sure how it will be doing in '12

The sideways painted bottle is a neat idea.

In the glass, away fom the light, the body seems pitch black. Held to the light, it's blood red. either way, it has a dark tan level head which leaves good lace.

Simply outstanding nose of dark fruits and spice. Subtle hints of alcohol soaking uinto the fruit. Extraordinarily enticing.

Taste begins with rich toasted malts, flows into soaking dark fruits, and on to a tingly spicy finish.

Mouthfeel is rich and slick without being syrupy.

Its big and complex but has excellent drinkability.

Truly deserving of the name "epic". I'm sorry, there is no way I could cellar something this good until 2012.

Chilled bottle into a glass. Received in a trade from soulfly967. Thanks man! I was saving this for a vertical with the guys, but at this point it's simply not happening, and I have too much beer. Here goes...

A: Pours a translucent, dark brown with a limpid half-finger of off-white head. It retains for about a minute before vanishing into a moderate collar on the brew. It looks like it's losing some carbonation.

S: The smell is quite nice, despite that. Cherries, anise, plums, a bit of clove.

T: A very interesting flavor. Subdued anise, which works VERY well with cherries, chocolate, raisins, and plums. There's a brown sugar and banana flavor throughout, and a hint of hoppy bitterness that offsets the otherwise sweet flavors nicely. It's also semi-dry, which lets the flavors speak for themselves without overwhelming the palate with sugars.

M: Definitely on the thin side, which is a bit off-putting since the beer is evidently losing carbonation (unless it was just really low-carbed to start with).

D: I thought this was pretty good! Glad I had it.

Deep chestnut brown color-borders on a faint black if there is such a thing. Small head at first-some nice lacing. Aroma of licorice and burnt raisens. Slight sulfur smell to it. Deep, robust flavor but not in a roasted malt way. Deep, licorice and burnt sugars. Slightly spiced. Faint black pepper taste. Nice, smooth and creamy mouthfeel-very full bodied. Very, very enjoyable beer. The best VE I think I have had. I bought 4 bottles this year and I am damn glad I did. Yummy.

Stone takeover at Duckworths. From notes.
Dark brown pour, whispy off white head. Little lacing.

Aroma is malty with belgian yeast and dark fruit heavily involved.

Tons of dark red fruits. A puckering midway through is a bit overpowering. Cocoa later and dry finishing with chocolate covered strawberry, cherry.

Mid bodied, no abv really to speak of. Maybe a little overcarbonated, but I tend to think that of the style in general. The puckering sour really hurts the drinkability for me. Doubt I'll see this again, glad I got to try it.

$6.99 a bottle at HiTime Wine Cellar. Bottle blabs about being chapter 5 in a 10 chapter series. (Other reviews indicate that their botle states fourth.) This Belgian Strong claims to be 8.66% with the identical yeast as 03.03.03.

Pours eggplant violet black with only thin glints of violet light splinters along the side of the glass against the light. An instantly settled collar stands atop a solid frozen offering.

Nose is a piquant liquorice and cocoa stab with some Dr. Pepper thrown in for good measure. Spices abound with clove and banana aspects via a deep Belgian yeast like rye bread.

First swigs: Dusty dry woody sawdust with a black liquorice and black cherry. Some overripe banana and even a charcoal tobacco flavor too. Abit overwhelming with an intensity that paints the tongue with palate paste. Copious amounts of wet bread dough flavor and an onslaught of flavor avalanche here. Big flavor.

Feel is a touch sugary thick with too much yeasty characteristics. I might have enjoyed this more if it were a touch lighter overall. Carbonation is proper but the toasted malt really leaves a footprint.

Last swigs: Liquid black jelly bean. Maybe too much so. Bold taste that just demands attention rather than attracts it but if I were the brewer for Stone I'd scratch my head every Epic too.

22 oz bottle. Pours a light brown with red highlights. It has a smallish slightly fizzy head that quickly dissipates to a thin collar.

The aroma is banana, cloves, yeast and some dark fruits.

The flavor is sweet and sugary initially leading to some banana and cloves with a spicy yeasty, peppery alcohol and slightly bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full with soft carbonation.

Overall, I don't normally care for sweet or banana flavors in beer, but I was surprised to find that I liked this one. The flavors mesh well together.

22 oz. bottle courtesy of czoch75 - likely the farthest back I'll ever go in this series, so many thanks to Clint (awesome trader). Poured in to a Duvel tulip.

Appearance: Pours a good dark Belgian hue, nearly black but not glassy or onyx-like, and instead multi-hued, with some light dancing through around the edges, sort of like it does through a cup of fresh coffee you made just a little too weak (note: the strength at which I take my coffee has made lesser men weep). This beer's opacity is a result of its hue, not its clarity, as a fair amount of slow carbonation is visible immediately inside its glassy prison. The head - initially about a finger tall, though it fades to inside a quarter finger within sixty seconds - is dense, uniform, and a pleasant though uninspiring dull tan. Ultimately, it leaves only a similarly-situated collar, unevenly dispersed around the circumference of the tulip, a few flashes of gilttery lace, and a ghostly whisper of surface lacing.

Aroma: A sweet, malty mess. Tons of brown sugar and toffee jump out the gate strong, along with a few darker and toastier notes, nothing too sweet but also nothing astringent. There's a fair amount of Belgian spice and yeasty esters - mostly cloves, but plenty of nutmeg, overripe bananas. A few chocolate notes emerge as this one nears room temperature.

Taste: Sort of laid back. This might have been a little more flavorful at one point, more varied, more subdued, but as its age, certain things have come through a little stronger, and certain others have faded a little too far. What's strong is the malt backbone, toasty, faintly sweet, like an old, well-attenuated sugars, slightly caramelly, toffee, brown sugar, faint cocoa and toast. A handful of fruity notes - raisins, plump plums, bananas, dried cherries - mingle with strong Belgian spices to suggest a once robust and still enjoyable but perhaps past-its-prime brew. A slightly faint vegetal note concludes things, mingling with a few astringent malt notes.

Mouthfeel: Perhaps this beer's best aspect, and there's a nice amount of smooth, well-integrated carbonation here, present, large and in charge after a good nearly-four years. Nothing sticky, nothing too intense ... just a smooth, well-aged sort of Belgian mouthfeel.

Drinkability: A straightforward beer and a slightly mixed bag at times. I think it's probably past its peak, but then again, I didn't have this one fresh, so I don't really know what I'm talking about from a relative point of view. I just know what "past its prime" beer tastes like, and this one exhibits a few of those characteristics. You can't knock Stone for not breaking outside the box, though - the vertical epic series will show brewers exactly what they can and can't, should and shouldn't do when creating series designed to be aged in this fashion. I had no problem finishing this one, and enjoyed it perfectly well at 4 years of age ... but I imagine it was at one point better, and will not get better with an additional two years, six months, and twenty days on it.

Another in a long line of outstanding stone products. Sleek but refined graphics on the bottle. Large head, thin coating of lace, and eventually falls to a topper. Dark body, looks rich.

If I had to compare it to another beer I'd say its very similair to the Gouden Carolus Grand Cru....Identical? of course not, but similair non the less in my experience. It's a belgian strong dark that has some balls so to speak. It has all the qualities you'd expect. Rich, Cloves, Dark fruits, etc. But what this has that the others don't is a scent and taste of smoke....yes smoke. It becomes bitter in the back corner of my mouth, more towards the finish. Aftertaste is lingering and the alcohol will sit for a bit to reflect on its naughty past. Rich Plumbs really take center stage as it warmed.

Notes: Its really good. Far from great. Cellared 8 and hopefully one will make it for the tasting in 2012.

Picked up a bottle Labor Day weekend at AJ's for $5.79.

Beer poured a deep mahogany with an off white head that is sustaining well. Nose is sweet, with a hint of bananas and cloves. Taste is of sweet malts, hint of candied sugar, bananas, and cloves. There is a lot of alcohol heat in the finish. Mouthfeel is full bodied, creamy, and smooth. Overall drinkabilty is good although the alcohol back bite is pretty heavy.

Somehow I never got around to reviewing this before now, let's see how it is holding up 3 years and 5 months since its release. Pours into my glass a deep dark brown with a small khaki head on top. Aromas of dark fruit and spice with roasted malt underneath. Quite a bit of yeast esters in there as well. Hints of plum and clove. A touch of oxidation is creeping in as well.

First sip brings dark roasted malts mixed with dark fruits. Licorice, chocolate and caramel mix in as it flows down with a nice kick of spicy, estery Belgian yeast. A bit woody on the finish as well with a touch of bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden. Pretty darn tasty still.

Mouthfeel is smooth and medium bodied with good steady carbonation. Overall, a tasty brew that has held up well at this stage in my opinion. I'm not sure how this will be tasting by 12.12.12 but I intend to let my other bottles chill in the cellar to find out!

Appearance: Pours a cola black with a small head that fades and leaves little lacing.

Smell: Smells to me like Birch beer soda with a splash of red syrup, cherry, licorice, yeast and dark brown sugar (maybe a drop of dark Karyo syrup. Beside the sweet candy aromas there was also a spicy yeast and grain attribute that kept this beer from becoming cloying.

Taste: This beer poke prods and prickles with spicy sugars zippy flavors that dance and spin on the taste buds. Yeasty spices with dark fruits, black licorice, molasses and plenty of acidity keep the mouth very busy.

Mouthfeel: The texture is very fizzy like a cola and spicy with yeast and alcohol.

Drinkability: Fantastically but it is not gentle. This is not a beer for the meek of palate. The acidity and yeasty spicy, the boozy alcohol dry bite, make this a beer for sipping by any definition. Obviously Vertical Epic is designed with the idea of cellaring. I do think this beer will mellow nicely with age.

For my 666th review: Stone 06.06.06 Vertical Epic Ale pours a very dark brown bordering on black with a tan head from a brown twenty two ounce bottle. The aroma is very sweet and has a touch of roasted malt. The taste is very complex, a touch of bubblegum, banana, clove, roasted malt, a hint of licorice and other flavors that I can't quite put my finger on. There is also just the slightest hint of alcohol, which is pretty well hidden. Quite tasty, recommended.

Pours a black-amberwith a one finger tan head that melted slowly to thik sticky lacing.
Aroma is sweet....roasted dark malts, ripe banana, dark fruits, heavy spices like cloves, and a hint of pine or spruce.
Taste is thick sweet prune juice initially followed with a roasty malt flavor then raisins and dark fruits with over-ripe banana at the end. Again, a slight pine in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is really rich and creamy.
Aftertaste is ripe banana and dark fruits.

Very enjoyable brew that is still a little rough around the edges but will balance nicely in time...enough so that I am going to buy a case for cellaring. I mention banana a lot in my review but it is a dark over-ripe banana that melds beautifully with the other dark fruit and roasted flavors. A lot of reviewers are calling this bubblegum, but to me it is much warmer and softer than bubblegum. The spruce and spice presence I sense reminds me of a Christmas dubbel begium beer.
I like it and the slow warming alcohol is making me like this more and more.

Not that much cellaring, I agree, but flavors are mellowing and blending incredibly well.
"Belgium" aspects are much more apparent this time around.
Aroma is still distinctively alcohol based, however the flavors have really balanced and blended to the point where the alcohol is definately secondary...maybe even 'thirdendary'.
Good stuff...I'm buying more to cellar for later...and later...and later.
This might be worth buying a bottle a week and just hiding it.

Consumed on January 20th, 2013 at a private Vertical Epic tasting.

This beer pours a clear, dark brown with no head and virtually no bubbles rising in the glass.

The aroma is sweet, almost syrupy. No other character noted.

Flavor is dark roasted malts with a hint of thin, bitter coffee, a touch of treacle character and a cedar note.

Mouthfeel is thin and still.

All together with me now: this was much better fresh.

A - Pours a dark brown/light black with a few ruby highlights and a thin brown head.

S - Spicy with dark fruits, earthy with some alcohol. A lot of malt is showing up in the aroma.

T - Yeasty spice and pepper, banana, clove, dark fruits, noticeable alcohol taste, woody with lingering licorice on the aftertaste.

M - Medium bodied and well carbonated. Bubbly in the mouth.

D - Unique and complex. Tasty.

Vicious mohagany black color. Opaque in the middle, transparent on the sides. Full creamy tan head holds solidly. Moderate lacing. Very fruity in particular plummy aroma. Dark raisins and yeast sorround. Almost a German type yeast flavor with banana/clove and some bubblegum in there. More plums/raisins in the taste. Dark chocolate comes in waves on top. A bit of spice toward the middle. More of a Belgian yeast taste as compared to the German yeast aroma. Hop bitterness comes forth mid-finish. An herbal character is in there slightly. Finish is chocolate cherry liquerish. Long smooth with a touch of burn in the belly. This is nice. Really, really intense in flavor but nothing is too overwhelming imo. A must try.

Cellared until Fall 2009.

Pours very dark brown to nearly black with thin head that retreats quickly to a thin lace. Nose is somewhat tepid with some brownbready aromas and overripe fruits. A light roasty component is noted as well. On the palate, a brown sugary sweetness comes forward with roasty malt flavors, a few holiday dessert spices, and finishes somewhat warm with alcohol. There's a lingering dark fruit flavor on the aftertaste.
