On tap @ the Winking Lizard for the Stone/Craftbeer meetup. Served in a pint glass.
The beer looks nice in the glass, but the haziness kills the score a bit. It's a murky yellow/orange with touches of gold around the edges. A nice white head crowns the hoppy beast within - certainly the king of palate killers.
The smell is really, really nice. I would almost call it a perfect smell if it was just a touch more tropical. Instead, notes of cascade's sweet grapefruit aroma couple with some pungent simcoe pine and cat. The beer is hugely expressive. The smell is the best part.
The first sip was awesome. Then my tongue went numb. Seriously, though, this is a huge beer with barely any discernable malt base. Grassy and bitter hops slam with huge flavor notes. Some notes of grapefruit rind and pine linger on and on. Could this be too much? I think so, not in terms of flavor, but in terms of the bitter peak and resonating devistation left in its wake.
I expected some oil in the mouthfeel, but this actually impressed me with the relatively clean feel and the medium body is pleasant. Enough carb is present to keep this from being too creamy. It's drinkable but you won't taste anything after the first. A great beer but a touch too hoppy for my tastes.
