The chipotle pepper version has an added spicy, chipotle and adobo character in the nose that melds with the existing smoke, chocolate and coffee aromas to create a smell vaguely reminiscient of mole sauce. The peppers aren't quite as prominent in the flavor, though a building, lingering heat in the beer's finish lets you know something is up. Overall, the peppers offer a restrained heat and a flavor that isn't wildly different from the regular Smoked Porter but contains a little extra earthiness, kick and vegetal character that is a fine match for grilled, smoked and rich foods. I drank it with a four-cheese-and-spinach lasagna, and the earthy, smoky flavors of the beer meshed nicely with the tomatoes, spinach and cheese, while the small kick from the peppers livened the dish up a bit. Like the smoke in the base beer, the peppers are used tastefully here.

I poured this into a standard 12-oz mug. The beer is very dark--completely opaque--with a small but lasting head of tan foam. The aroma is great--wonderful maltiness, with a light smokiness, and a sharp scent of chiles. Taste mirrors this. There's a good black patent malt flavor, but it doesn't dominate, and lets the smoky flavor come through well--a nice subtle smokiness I should add. The phenols are not overpowering. The chipotle taste is more apparent in the aroma than to taste, but there's still there if you look--especially at the finish. The body is a little thin and watery, the only downside to this beer. Otherwise, very drinkable.
