Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

In this year’s edition we took our inspiration from two Belgian styles: Saisons and Golden Triples. As such, the Stone 07.07.07 Vertical Epic has a deep, deep golden hue and the flavor is spicy, fruity, complex and refreshing. We used four different malts, and a subtle, yet distinct, blend of Glacier and Crystal hops to get just the right balance. Then, for the complexity, we added in some exotic spices --- including ginger, cardamom, grapefruit peel, lemon peel and orange peel (the latter three acknowledging our Southern California home) --- and a special Belgian yeast strain. All in all this is yet another case of us drawing from classic Belgian influences and cavalierly making it our own...San Diego style!

Spicey yeast aroma is great. Cloudy yellow with substantial lace. Orange, pineapple, and malty, ginger, cloves, some citrus peel, and much sweet finish.Smooth drinking. Medium mouthfeel and suitable understated carbonation. Good Belgium strong and good break from so many other chocolate and coffee ales.

22oz bottle

A- Pours a dark golden orange color with a fizzy off-white head.

S- The aroma is light fruity esters (apple and pear) with some spices, orange peel and Belgian yeast. The nose is pretty solid, the spices in particular make it rather interesting.

T- The taste features much of the same flavors that were present in the aroma. The apple/pear combo is enhanced with a good amount of spices in the taste. Reminds me more of a Tripel than a Saison, but does have characteristics of both.

M- The mouthfeel is light-medium bodied with a high amount of carbonation.

D- Not too bad, not a session beer by any means but it is a nice drinker.

Overall, Stone Vertical Epic 07.07.07 is another great beer from this outstanding brewery that is recommended.

Winey ale full of Belgian flavors.

Rich with malt and funky with yeasty flavors. Hops are not the feature but taste buds slowly awaken to the bitter edge. Very sweet with plain sugar taste. Maybe it's the color but it makes me think of golden raisins. All the flavorings make for an indecipherable fruit salad, but it's pleasing, like a good fruitcake.

I think this is one of the most "liqueur" tasting beers I have had. The sweetness mixed with the intensity of the Belgian flavors makes this good for a short pour in a big chalice to take it all in.

Sadly I missed the 02-02-02 through 06-06-06 but maybe they'll turn up somewhere.

A: A nice hazy honey color. Not much head, but some small bubbles going up the side of the glass.

S: Smells smooth and sweet with plenty of spices. Pepper, ginger and others.

T: The first taste is very sublte honey sweetness but quickly followed by a blast of spices. Pepper, citrus, ginger, and plenty of other stuff I can't even beging to identify.

MF: This really captures the Belgian mouthfeel well-light but very sharp. Spicy/peppery alcohol which combined with the carbonation makes this a biting beer.

D: I like this, but I think Stone took it a bit too far. The flavor is a bit too much for the style. The mouthfeel is the thing that really gets me, it's just a bit too sharp, almost hard to drink. Not bad, but I think others do this style better.

I was fortunate to try this last night at an epic tasting held by my good friend Mike, thanks for the opportunity MrBarleywine! At this beer Jeff started picking on me about taking notes, he is mean and just made the list ;)
Pours a slightly hazy deep golden color with a smallish off white head that sticks for a bit. The aroma is spicy and fruity with a huge hit of ginger that seems to dominate the aroma. The flavor is sweet with light sugar with a twist of orange and citrus. Ginger, allspice, coriander and pepper round out the spice palette in this beer. Light body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet mouthfeel. I liked this one its a weird mix between triple and saison, but from my wrecked full flavored palette this is a pretty decent saison.

had as part of a big VE tasting at the end of the world party, shared with many friends.

Pours a light fizzy head, murky hazy sediment, reddish orange color.

Nose earthy malts, sweet malts, Belgian like, light citrus and fruit, apple, hint hops, light booze esters.

Taste has aged malts, light oxidation, Belgian golden malts and esters, booze, light tea chamomile like, light spices, phenols, booze, light apple like fruit, raisin, etc.

Mouth is med bodied, dec carb for the age at least.

Overall decent Belgian beer, aging took it's toll but still a fairly decent beer overall.

Appearance: clear yellowish orange in color. One finger head lingers around a while. Some spots of lace developed during the session.

Smell: big spiciness and some citrus tones are pleasant and enjoyable on the nose.

Taste: citrus is quite dominant with this in its young age. Ginger, oranges, lemon zest, and a yeast spiciness is balanced with a decent maltiness and a good hop bite. Alcohol is noticeable but not offensive.

Mouthfeel: lightly crisp on the tonge and a touch of dryness finishes it out. Medium bodied beer. Long spicy and citrus laden aftertaste.

Drinkability: decent but this needs to mellow a bit. Definitely buy a few of these so you can try it over time.

Review #100 for me and my first Stone epic...cool.

Porus either a bright gold or a pale copper depending on your perspective. Good clarity and a some bubbling action. Less than an inch of off-white head that recedes fairly quickly, leaving a thin and splotchy lace and really no stick on the sides of the glass. Was expecting better head and retention.

Smell is dominated by citrusy lemon zest and spice. There's definitely ginger in there and who knows what other spices, although some of that spice is hops, as well as some yeast and alcohol.

Taste is pretty much the same as the smell. Lemon, ginger and spice are all there and there is a subtle malt sweetness present, as well. Finishes dry with a a bit of hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium- to full-bodied and has a crisp carbonation.

I like the flavor but it gets to be a bit much by the time the bomber is through. I haven't had other epics to compare this to, and sadly I didn't buy another bottle to see how it ages, but I enjoyed this one here and now.

Tasted today on 07.07.07.

Poured into my tulip glass. Pours golden straw color with a thin white head that disappears.

Smells of belgian yest and spices. Clove? Nutmeg? Cinnamin? I don't know for sure, I'm not quite good at this yet.

Taste is strong spice, coriander. Might be a little hot right now with strong spices, but I liked it. Not everyone else in my group did.

Moutfeel is bubble, duvel like. Toward the end looses carbonation becomes very sweet and strong mouthfeel

On tap at Brouwers on 12/12/12. Review from notes.

A: 7/7/7 was a golden orange with a small white foamy head that lasted longer than most of the other VEs. Again, minimal lacing.

S: Lots of ginger, lavender and cardamom as well as a surprising amount of citrus.

T: Lots of citrus rind, orange, ginger, lavender, and flowers/grass.

M: Medium bodied with low to medium carbonation.

O: Liked it, didn't love it, but was impressed by how well this one held up. Held up significantly better than any of the older VEs.
