22oz bottle into a FW tulip. BB 3/4/13

pours a dark brown with a big beige head...very reminiscent of root beer. super attractive pour. Smell is definitely smoky...very much so. roasted malts as well. taste starts out super smokey with smoked malts and you get the vanilla in the finish. its not superb...doesnt wow you but its solid. medium bodied with mild carbonation, i would have thought abv was higher but im not complaining!

overall good smoked beer. vanilla is subtle.

Opaque body with thin, spotty off-white head floating around. Soft aroma of vanilla, milk chocolate, light roast, and subtle ash. Tastes of vanilla beans, milk chocolate made from spoiled milk, light bitterness comes through towards the finish, the smokiness tranforms into a strange burnt grassiness in the background behind the sweets. It's a college kid's idea putting vanilla beans into a great porter. It might have been worth the experiment but who would reach for this more than once?

22oz bomber poured into chalice.

Look: Almost black, thin khaki head,
Aroma notes: smokey, peaty, milk chocolate, espresso, vanilla.
Tasting notes:smokey, vanilla, hints of cocoa, bitter chocolate.
Feel:light bodied.

I like this one, it's not the greatest thing to ever come out of this brewery but it has its moments. The smokiness is out in the front taking control which I like. Then the vanilla and chocolate come in a little subdued. I could stand the vanilla being a little stronger. I've never been too impressed by any porter, so this sits right in the middle top.

A- Pours a moderate brown with lighter hues faintly coming thru once the light hits the glass. A delicate khaki head fades into a ring around the edge, but leads to some outstanding lacing. As with the standard version, looks quite thin in comparison to most porters today.

S- Smoke still leads the way from the get go, but it is accompanied with an authentic vanilla undertone that avoids any artificial flavoring. Smoked meats, roasted walnuts, and light earthy hops. Not bad, but doesn't seem to be a perfect fit for me.

T- Flavor is bold and aggressive. While the vanilla is present, it isn't overpowering to any degree. Adds a level of softness in the finish. Lots of peat all the way though. Certainly a perfect example of the style that is dying to be paired with a great dish (salmon, smoked bacon, burger, etc).

M- Probably the aspect of this version that I prefer over the standard. Seems to be a bit more body to it, but still more mid body. Smooth with little bitterness or astringency.

O- It makes no bones about being a 100% smoked beer. The vanilla adds a little twist on the original without deviating too far from effort previously set forth.
