22 ounce bottle for $5.99 (I think) at La Bodega in Riverside, CA. Purchased in Jan 2009 and consumed in February of that year.
Pours a black black opaque black like the finest of inky beers, but a brown hint comes through when seen in partial reflection. A nice moderately frothy brown head sits atop this pretty beer.
Aroma is strongly hopped IPA style, grassy and pine resin playing off each other- not much citrus, just a touch. Solid malt base is there too to offset the hops.
Flavor is at first the solid rich toasty roasty chocolate-caramel malts, almost a bit ashen, and then a rush of hops bitterness and an alcohol burn end. The ash notes are stronger (much stronger) in the aftertaste.
A solidly built beer, quite a hop lover's delight. I personally wish it were a bit more fruity and less ashy, but that is a minor compliant in the presence of a well-built taste sensation. It's probably more "in style" (whatever that means) with the darkness of this beer.

This has to be the best black IPA on the planet. Great dark appearance! The smell of roasted malts is phenomenal. Characteristically over hopped like many Stone beers but the Taste is a perfect blend of malt and hops. This could be my favorite Stone beer, and they have a lot of great ones!

Purchased a variety pack in Bridgeville, PA.
Pours very dark, but not pitch black. The lightest beer that is called "black" I've ever seen.
First smell is of your everyday ipa. Nothing out of the ordinary. Hoppy/Citrus, blah blah blah.
I have to be honest I am not very found of this beer. I like Stone Brewery, I guess my expectations were too high. Piney, grapefruit, but just too bitter for me.
Mouthfeel. I don't know, a little watery to me. Just not very fond of it. I taste no alcohol.
Overall, I wouldn't purchase this as a case or a 6 pack. It was fine for a variety pack. Too much bitter after taste, and not enough flavor and poor mouthfeel.
