Pours a dark, dark brown with a thin tan head. Just by pouring I might think this was a porter or stout.
Aroma is pretty incredible. Right away you get hit with tropical fruit: mango, papaya, pineapple. In the back when you take a deep sniff there is a hint of roastyness.
Up front, as it warms, you get a small hint of chocolate sweetness, but this is buried by the juicy, fruity hops. You encounter the tropical fruityness once again with a big papaya/mango finish with enough bitterness to keep you interested again and again. I can't really pick up any roastyness from the malts as others have....
Body is fairly full, probably from the large amount of barley used. Nice.
This is a very unique beer. The flavor reminds me a lot of Ruination. Don't let the dark color fool you, this baby is a full flavored double IPA with lots of juicy hops. Highly recommended.
edit: towards the end there was a papaya like "funkyness" in the finish that might have been the roasted malts coming through. I didn't find it that appealing and the bomber was hard to finish....

12oz bottle from Stone variety pack, poured into pint glass. Enjoy by 10/02/14.
Black body with reddish hints when held up against a light. Small tan colored head, well carbonated, and good lacing.
Faint sweetness on the nose.
Taste was very nice, sweet with only a very faint bitterness. Roasted malts come out at the end. (Similar pattern to Arrogant Bastard) Mouth was around medium.
I personally do not really understand Black Ales/IPA's, seems to me there are always much better options on either the IPA or stout side. This one seems to favor the stout side. Taste seem to improve as the ale warmed up toward room temperature. Overall, an enjoyable drink.
