A 22oz bomber into my Brooklyn tulip tumbler. A clear dark brew, like the color of Coke syrup. Light barely gets through the glass. A good sized somewhat rocky tan head bubbles up and eventually thins to an algae like covering active and alive. Lacing goes all the way down my glass as I enjoy.
Piney grapefruit with a hearty roasted malt undertone hits my nose with force. Simple, uncomplicated appealing.
Roasted malt and coffee with an aggressive hoppiness are the main players in the game here. A burnt caramel malt sweetness flows underneath and ties it in nicely. Grapefruit and piney hops are a feature of the long drying finish.
A nicely weighted medium mouthfeel with mild carbonation.
Feels lighter than it is really.
Quite drinkable for the abv. Alcohol is well hidden.
Two words here. Winter IPA. A brilliant concoction, keep a few for the holiday season '08!!

This has to be the best black IPA on the planet. Great dark appearance! The smell of roasted malts is phenomenal. Characteristically over hopped like many Stone beers but the Taste is a perfect blend of malt and hops. This could be my favorite Stone beer, and they have a lot of great ones!

Purchased a variety pack in Bridgeville, PA.
Pours very dark, but not pitch black. The lightest beer that is called "black" I've ever seen.
First smell is of your everyday ipa. Nothing out of the ordinary. Hoppy/Citrus, blah blah blah.
I have to be honest I am not very found of this beer. I like Stone Brewery, I guess my expectations were too high. Piney, grapefruit, but just too bitter for me.
Mouthfeel. I don't know, a little watery to me. Just not very fond of it. I taste no alcohol.
Overall, I wouldn't purchase this as a case or a 6 pack. It was fine for a variety pack. Too much bitter after taste, and not enough flavor and poor mouthfeel.
