Poured from a 22oz bomber into a Stone pint glass.

A: Pours a jet black color with a huge tan head.

S: The aroma on this one if fascinating. The complexity in the nose hints at what is in store for the taste. The smell is primarily that of wonderfully fresh hops: citrus, pineapple, and a bit of pine. But wait, what is that? Some aromas normally associated with that of a stout show up as well; a bit of espresso and even some chocolate.

T: This has got to be one of the more difficult beers to describe that I've ever tasted. It has amazing complexity and layers of flavors. The primary flavors are that of an excellent IPA. Citrus, tropical fruits and delicious piney oils. The IPA part of this beer would alone make it worthwhile. However, there is something much more lurking in this brew. Hiding underneath the IPA lies the flavors of a dark stout. Some espresso, slightly sweet molasses, even some chocolate. I drank two glasses of this beer at two different temperatures and it drank like two totally separate beers. The first glass was rather cold and drank like an IPA, the second glass the brew was quite a bit warmer and at this temperature the dark malt flavors dominated. A truly unique and fascinating beer.

M: As good as the smell and taste of this beer is, the mouthfeel might be the best part. It's creamy and smooth yet not all that full-bodied for such a dark beer.

D: A very drinkable beer for how dark is it. A simply delicious, complex, and fascinating beer. Stone Brewing is awesome. They are constantly pushing the boundaries of craft brewing and turning out consistently unique and outstanding beers.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Dark black with red hues and two-finger, tan, creamy head that lasted forever. Fantastic lacing.

S: Resin hops. Chocolate. Very nice, but somewhat mild.

T: Moderate sweetness and moderate bitterness. Burnt notes, chocolate, coffee, hops. Very nice.

M: Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Somewhat thin.

O: This is a really interesting beer. Tastes like an IPA/stout.

Dense, dark garnet-black bordering on midnight in all but the thinnest regions of the glass, with a massive pillowy head of tan foam.

Aroma of dark malts, tannins, leather, leafy hops.

Taste is smooth and creamy dark malts first, then some moderate leafy hops mingling with a hint of citrus and pine. Finish turns almost light and fluffy with just a mild twinge of alcohol.

Easy to drink for its size and incredibly more-ish... imagine a schwarzbier brewed with ale yeast and then hopped to standard American IPA levels.

In a word, exceptional.

Amazing, must try beer. Best black IPA ever.

A: The head capped the beer and lasted for an hour as I let it come to cellar temp.
Bold, black body, creamy thick head like a stout.

S: Hops forward, but crazy original salt & sweet malts in the background. Prominent pine, charcoal, summer hay, herbs.

T: Earthier, but follows the smell profile. Deeply complex. Kind of like a strong ale or Belgian in the sweet malt backbone, but with more charcoal and chalk.

MF: Good body, then chalk-like crispness, dry finish.

Amazing beer, starts more amazing than it finishes. Compares well with Arrogant Bastard, which stands as an all-time fave.
