Unique creation. Very good, was a pleasure to drink. Originally brewed for their 11th Anniversary in 2007 and it is still being brewed. I must drink it every year to celebrate the anniversary of trying this beer. Thin tan head on a black beer with hints of red on the perimeter. Aroma is complex and the taste is superb. Cheers.

Notes from phone

Present to myself after finals

A&S: Piney and floral hops, maybe a little earthy tones thrown in. Looks super carbonated almost like how beer look when they are from a nitro keg. Plus three fingers of light tan head. Medium black colored beer. Head is retianed in a thin foamy layer on top with thick clumps to specks.

T&M: A very stong sweet pineyness, not a ton of caramel, kinda a sour bitterness in the finish. Pretty easy to drink. Kinda sick of the taste of this beer, cause it tastes kinda similar to my black ipa (not to tut my own horn). Medium bodied medium carbonation. Very drinkable.

Overall: I liked it, I though that their 15 anniversary black ipa is way better, but this one is still really enjoyable.

I was feeling self-righteously sublime with a glass stein.

Appearance- Atop the opaque and cola-colored body sits a two-finger width band of mocha. The pillowy foam has a rather cratered cap rife with big bubbles. Retention is pretty decent, still a good finger-width wad after a few minutes.

Smell- So much pine and resin present on the nose being squeezed by plenty of citrus aroma. The citrus is more tangy than sour, more on the grapefruit end of the spectrum, rather than lemon or lime.

A burnt quality wafts through momentarily, about as much of the dark malt that I am sensing.

Taste- Neither end of the malty and hoppy spectrum ever takes complete control of the palate over the entirety of the drink. The malt backbone is still coming across mostly as roasted, with a slight vegetal tang.

And the citrus blends so well into this offering. Again, more grapefruit, maybe even star fruit and orange coming through. Piney and resinous characteristics are far in reserve and are most noticed in the finish. A nice little kick of bitterness is present too. Well done.

Mouth feel- I hope you like them dry because this one really sucks at the cheeks. The hop bitterness really sticks to the sides of the tongue the more you drink.

The body is not all that hefty, but still a decent medium feel with an easy swallow. It could have been heavier than this and I would have been really happy with it.

Overall- Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale is a beer that demonstrates how well this style can be crafted. The blend of dark malts and hops produce a combination of flavors so well balanced it is as if they could not have existed apart from one another before this beer existed.

Despite a mouth feel that does not quite do the beer justice, I would seek this one out again gladly.

Snifter

Elegant half finger head with copious lacing

Smells of hops, some fruit, and malt

Tastes: Hemp and hop at the beginning, combined with some light apricot. Mighty hop bitterness at finish.

Superb beer with an elegant mouthfeel!

Overall, seek this one out soon!

Poured into a brandy snifter. Pours black with a tan head that dissipates slowly, leaving some lacing on the side of the glass. The beer is opaque, but bubbles can be seen collecting on the underside of the head. The hop aroma of this beer is strong, but I can also pick up dark roasted malts, bitter chocolate, and some mild sweetness in the smell. The taste follows the nose. The citrus hop flavor is intense, but I can also pick up the malty flavors as well as bitter chocolate and anise. The alcohol is well-hidden in the flavor. The body of the beer is medium to full with plentiful carbonation. The drinkability is very high for such a big beer. Overall, this is a most excellent beer that everyone should try once.
