Gigantic head with huge tan bubbles and perfect retention over midnight black beer - no light comes through even if you hold it right up to a light bulb. Lacing clings to the side. Amazing looking beer.

Smell is bright orange citrus hops backed by pine hops. I dig. I dig a lot.

Taste is darker and maltier than the smell, with a unique, powerful blast of roasted malts blended with orange/pine hops. A very American West Coast in-your-face beer with such overpowering malts and hops. Like most Stone products, a beer drinker's beer, not made for the masses whose thirst is quenched by bland highly carbonated, slightly metallic, light beers.

Alcohol? What alcohol? The strong flavors mask the 8.7%. Beware. The one downside here is drinkablity - both because of the high alcohol content and the overwhelming flavors. I wouldn't consider it a session beer.

A: pours black as coffe. Thin spiderwebbed lacing hangs around.

S: chocolate tone with hints of pine.

T: a malty smooth transition to a bitter "Stone" bite.

M: overbearing carbonation then ending sharp and dry.

O: not my favorite Stone creation, but it's no doubt another unique creation for the lineup. They call it an ale, I call it a bitter porter.

Reviewed from notes written on 4/24/11.

SSR pours a deep brown, bordering on black, with ruby tints around the edges. Its head is a dark khaki-light chocolate milk color and rises to two fingers in a large snifter. Lacing left behind is intricate and sticky.

Light roasted malt and milk chocolate aromas blend with hop aromas of grapefruit and pine to produce a lovely bouquet. A nice caramel smell seeps between the roastiness and hops and creates a lovely, well-balanced smell.

The taste fuses the best of a roasty, chocolate-y porter and an aggressively hopped IPA. It is truly remarkable how deftly the two styles blend together in this beer. The start of the taste is more porter-like, while the hoppier citrus flavors emerge toward the end. The aftertaste brings back the roast and chocolate flavors. So yummy.

The mouthfeel is rich, creamy, and smooth throughout with just enough bitter alpha-acid hop bite at the end. It's so nice that it's decadent and slightly puckerin at the same time.

This is a very appealing, well crafted beer. Stone F-ing rules! It really pushes the bounds of what my palate is used to, while at the same time being fairly easy to handle. I really enjoyed this beer.
