A -- poured into a dogfish head chalice. This brew has a very dark/black appearance similar to a stout or a porter. Almost no head.

S-- smells like a Stone IPA and a malty porter. Strong hoppy smell at first w/ malt and caramel notes that follow

T-- I think a couple of other people have already mentioned it, but this brew is like an IPA & a porter had a baby! Very drinkable, absolutely cannot tell that it's 9% abv... Almost as good as their escondidan imperial black IPA.

M -- not too much carbonation, but didn't bother me. Had a nice coffee-type bitterness/bite

O -- I have never had a brew from that has been average. They are one of the best breweries in the U.S. This is another example of why... Unique hybrid that satisfies both your IPA & stout/porter cravings. Really solid brew.

Someone said it best, "looks like used motor oil" lol, but don't let that deter you. The head could use a little help, but everything else is quite delightful.

As with all stone beer, you'll taste some hops, but there is something about this one that merges flavors into something truly special. This is the type of beer you savory as it warms up a bit. It's no wonder they serve it in a brandy snifter type glass. It's the fine cognac of stone's beers, and if you've tried their beer you know they don't mess around.

This beer was not going to be sold to the masses originally, but the employees loved it so much they had to share their passion with everyone. Thank you Stone Brewing, truly a work of art.

Appearance:
The beer pours a deep and dark chocolate brown. Very little head forms that is a dark tan. The beer also leaves a bit of lacing.

Smell:
I smell hints of dark chocolate mixed with roasted malts. The hops are a nice citrus smell that balances out the malt.

Taste:
I get nice mix of roasted malts with citrus hops. In addition to the roasted malts, the beer also has a slight dark chocolate taste to it. The aftertaste mainly consists of citrus hops.

Mouthfeel:
A dry feeling with little carbonation.

Overall:
A very good beer and the best American Black Ale that I've had for a while. Personally, I wish that this came in a 6-pack.

Enjoyed in a tulip glass

A: pours near black in color, pours with a two finger creamy head that is mocha brown which lingers nicely and leaves a ton of lingering lacing
S: nice citrus hop notes up front, very slight caramel malts slide in at the end
T: nice citrus hop notes initially, very fresh, then the malts kick in really nicely towards the end which helps to really even it out, very yummy
M: smooth with very gentle carbonation, slight kick at the end, very creamy
O: a great balck ipa really delicious and well balanced, everything i had hoped this brew would be, ill pick it up again in a heartbeat
