Let me just say that I was a little wary when I purchased this beer. I'm not very partial to black IPA's, as I've had bad experiences with them. Actually, I purchased this beer as part of a four-pack that had three other stone beers I absolutely love. Here goes:
A: Very good. Pours thick and pitch-black. Given the alcohol content and presence of roasted malt, this isn't surprising. I do take a little issue with the size of the head, but the lacing was rather good (good protein content).
S: Again, very good. Roasted malt predominated by cascade and chinook hops. Slightly imbalanced, as the hops predominate, but good nonetheless.
T: WOW. Simply brilliant. A great interplay between the hops and the malt. The first taste one gets is the deep, dark-roasted chocolate malt. Chocolate and coffee predominate. Then, the malt is taken over by the hops, which impart flavors of grapefruit, lemon and pine. After swallowing, the taste of the burnt malt lingers in the back of the throat. Delicious.
M: Gorgeous. Nice and thick. It glides down the throat creamily.
O: A great beer. It has restored my faith in black IPA's. A great balance between malt and hops. Nearly perfect.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a shaker pint glass. Enjoy by 09/03/14
A- Pours a dark roast coffee, some light is coming through, probably the lightest black IPA I've had. Head has a slight brown tint to it.
S- Huge hops, it's got that smell you get from opening a bag of hops, got that sort of Fruit Loops type of aroma to it, must be dry hopped heavily. Dankness, citrus, tropical notes of passion fruit and pineapple.
T- Again huge hop flavors of dank pine, grapefruit, pineapple, passion fruit, a lingering bitterness that is higher than in other black IPAs such as NightTime. Not really getting a lot if any roasted flavors, which is good but it seems like if your gonna make a black IPA you'd want the roasts to show up at some point. I think NightTime has a better roast presence.
M- Medium, similar to most IPAs.
O- I've passed over this beer for far too long and I will do it no more. The aroma on this beer is huge but it is slightly more bitter than I would like but that's nitpicking. For awhile I thought this beer was just a German style black ale but boy was I wrong. Also they could amp up the roast presence ever so slightly and it would probably be the best black IPA out there. But I really dig the hop profile on this one, it might be coincidence that I find NightTime to have a very similar hop profile, or maybe not.
