For review #100, I wanted to try something special. I have a good feeling about this, but lets see how it goes....

Pours an inky, opaque black with a small, dark brown head. Smells of earthy hops and molasses. Taste is very rich, a large sweet malt presence is matched by bitter chocolate and coffee flavors. There is a tiny hint of citrus, and large earthy hop flavor. Bitterness levels round things out nicely. Mouthfeel is huge, carbonation levels nice and low. Drinkability is very good considering the ABV. A fantastic beer from Stone, unfortunately I will probably not get a chance to try this again as it is not available in Tulsa.

Pours very black in color with a small tannish head that fades quickly into nothing. No lacing.

Dark bitter chocolate, who would of thunk. Cocoa and hints of vanilla and grain. Very grainy and in your face. Caramel and black fruit esters.

Very bitter and chocolatey with a nice silky smoothness from the oats. Black currant and anise fight each other in the background. Nice alcohol on the finish with caramel, slight vanilla, bakers chocolate, cocoa, roasted malts with a hint of tobacco and spent coffee grains. A very nice beer that could use a little time for the unsweetened chocolate tannins to surrender.

22oz to tulip glass, deep roasty looking brownish black opaque, foamy mocha head, great retention, looks awesome!

smells of roasty bitter chocolate, malty heavy goodness, smells deep

tastes of heavy chocolate malts, hot! alchohol heat, smooth oats, roasty bitterness, nice hop finish lingers, loads of flavors bundled into one, coffee, spice, rich and complex!

mouthfeel is heavy, loads of flavor, good weight, a little too hot right now for my tastes, would love to cellar a few of these guys for the future :D

22oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A- Pours a pitch black color with a nice tan colored head with good retention and lacing.

S- The aroma is dark roasted malts, bitter chocolate, hints of roasted coffee and alcohol. The smell lets me know this is going to be a big beer.

T- The taste is starts out very smooth and creamy from the mouthfeel with some of roasted malts quickly followed by a nice bitter finish.

M- The mouthfeel is silky smooth from the oatmeal with a moderate amount of carbonation. Oh so smooth and creamy, very nice!

D- Very good stuff, and not too boozy for a 9% beer even though you can feel the warmth.

Overall, the Stone 12th Anniversary brew is another kick ass beer from Stone that is recommended. It will be interesting to see how well this one ages. Give this some time to age a little and I think that it will be phenomenal in a few years.

I picked up a few of these at my local liquor store... not bad if you ask me! I poured a 22oz bomber into a 16oz pint glass, and gave the remainder to my brother to try.

A: The beer pours pitch black with the most delicious looking chocolate colored head. One look at this beer and you know it has hardy written all over it.

S: A few aromas permeate from this brew such as coffee and dark chocolate, a closer sniff will reveal some hops well. As you drink the beer, a slight alcohol smell develops as the beer warms, but eventually goes away.

T: When poured, the beer starts off with an awesome combination of flavors, to me it is like the oatmeal stout creates the base and is layered with the chocolate flavors of a porter. The use of real dark chocolate really brings out a different type of bitterness for those used to hop bitterness. In my opinion, this is a huge plus because it really gives the beer a nice balanced taste without swinging into extremes. The only fault is as I reached the middle of my beer, the taste of alcohol became a little more noticeable.

M: the only word to describe this is hardy. A nice thickness enhanced by a perfect carbonation gives this stout a great feel.

D. This was hard to score because stouts in general can never really have the drinkability of a lighter bodied beer. It is not wise to pound this beer after beer, it should be enjoyed slowly. However, as stouts go, this is pretty easy to drink. As before it loses a point do to its odd alcohol taste in the middle (considering it is hidden very well at the beginning and the end). Thankfully, it finished very clean with a sweet chocolate taste and a hint of coffee.

Stone did a great job with this one, only a few flaws.

I have eagarly anticipated sampling this beer, the 11th has been parked in my fridge for a year, I guess I will work backwards!
Pours a Midnight black color, capped with a deep brown espresso head. looks utterly delicious.
Aromas of fruity estery notes, chocolate powders, coffee, espresso, oat-earthy bitterness, hops provide a light background, but are smoothed by a roasted malt background.
Taste is a complete balance of bitter chocolate, cut by a dry roasted malty lactic sweetness. Coffee notes and a light touch of citric tartness add to the complexity. Age will benefit this beer to allow the alcohol burn to mingle the flavors into complete harmony.
Mouthfeel is med-thick, with a long bitter warm finish, a fantastic stout in colder months.
I look foward to trying this again after age has allowed it to congeal into bitter-chocolate oatmeal perfection, but drinking it in its young "tannic" version is a great experience to partake in.

I love my oatmeal stouts, but imperializing the style seems to defeat the purpose. Let's see what Stone can do with this one.

Pours a complete midnight black with a full two finger dark brown head that reamains for quite some time. A thick layer of webbing is left on the sides covering just about everything. Smell consists of wet cardboard, charred wood, and smokey malts. Not much chocolate or oatmeal in the nose, hmmm. Taste starts off with bitter hops and cocoa powder with dry wood. Spent coffee grinds midway with a cough syrup burn and dark fruits. Where's the oatmeal? Aftertaste is dry and smokey and lasts much too long. Body is full and chewy with a subtle but stinging carbonation. Way too much going on with this beer, it seems to be all over the place. The burning alcohol and powerful bitterness really kill the drinkability. I'm hoping some age will smooth this out and bring about some sweetness, I guess we'll have to wait and see. Oatmeal stouts are supposed to be smooth and drinkable, not harsh and boozy. I'll pass...

A - Opaque/black with a beautiful deep copper/espresso colored head that leaves moderate lace.

S - Not too much there... a touch of chocolate and hops.

T/M - Splendid espresso, cocoa powder, green olive, leather, and hops all coming together in a silky, creamy stout that's firing on all cylinders. The alcohol is there but it's very supportive in this sophisticated brew.

D - More than drinkable and would be great with BBQ, cigars, on its own - you name it. Wonderful stuff I intend to buy again and even let a couple of them age.

Edit: Upon having another... Still love the beer, but toning back the score a tad.

Pours thick and pitch black with a dark brown head. Even held up to the light, nothing comes through. No highlights, no brownness, nothing.

Smell is a blend of bitter, but fresh, coffee and dark chocolate.

I know everyone has a bitterness threshold, and a few years ago this would've been too much for me, but now it is perfect. Smooth dark chocolate flavors dominate. They become even smoother and more pronounced as the beer warms. Also flavors of delicious roasted coffee, burnt toast, and a suprisingly heavy dose of hops that blend in well.

Mouthfeel was flawless. Perfect carbonation. Frothy and creamy.

This beer truly gets better as it warms. The bitterness is well balanced, and the 9.2 ABV is well masked, leaving just a warming feeling. I will definitely be buying another before they run out.

Bomber into a pint glass, shared with a friend.

Pours a majorly opaque, pitch black body beneath a thick pillow of dark brown head. Leaves behind sticky trails of tan lace along the inside of the glass. The aroma is awash in espresso, pungent earthy notes, oatmeal, and rich dark chocolate. Lots of hoppiness, too.

Stone always seems to be able to pack a punch into their beers that pleases, but doesn't overwhelm; their 12th Anniversary is no exception. Huge notes of bitter chocolate immediately greet the palate, followed by ground coffee beans and roasted malt. Mouthfeel is thick and chewy, with a spot-on carbonation level that spices up the palate and brings out a gentle boozy warmth. Complex notes of bitter hops and dark chocolate liquor on the finish. Excellent job, Stone, and here's to another 12 years!

Black-hole dark, and so thick in appearance that it seems remarkable that a head can push itself through the body and form; it does, but as if exhausted, settles into a bare half-inch or so, no matter how aggressively I pour. Every few seconds, a large bubble appears and pops on the surface, as if the beer were still fermenting below.

Acrid and smoky, old Hibachi aroma. Others have detected chocolate, but I cannot; all I can smell is the smoke.

And so, the taste is very smoky and - oddly - salty. Makes my mouth salivate after I've swallowed. I have never had a beer that gave me the sense of salt that this one does. Odd, but enchanting.

The mouthfeel is tremendous. The creamiest, fullest mouthfeel I've experienced in many months. Incredible.

Bravo. I am going to pick up a few more of these, and see how they age.

This is one amazing stout.

Pours dark brown to black with a coffee/cream head. Good retention.
Smell is chocolate, bittering hops, and chocolate malt.
Taste is amazing, bitter up front but not overpowering, followed by chocolate, with hops following after. Long finish but sooo enjoyable. Little to no alcohol taste or wamth detected.
Mouthfeel is also incredible. I don't know how they did it but this beer is so smooth it's like "wiping your [tongue] with silk." Must have copius amounts of oatmeal in the mash. Very full bodied!
Drinkability is very high for such a large beer. I found myself drinking this way too fast. This is the best chocolate stout I have had to date.

Pours very deep and dark, medium tan head with decent retention, somewhat fizzy and less creamy that you'd guess. Pretty much black and potent looking. Smell is dark bitter chocolate. Some sweetness coming through but little to none. Coffee, a touch of smoke, and even a spicy scent. Taste is pretty nice. Very interesting for sure without the chocolate becoming overbearing or offensive. A richness from the oatmeal that fills it out nicely and compliments the dark chocolate flavors. Light roast and notes of chicory from what I can tell. Good round mouthfeel that is close to full. Goes down all too easy and was surprisingly solid. I liked this one.

Popping open another one of my bombers for drink and review purposes.

22 ouncer into a shaker pint glass.

A - Deep, dark brew. Basically opaque black, with just under two fingers of light brown colored head. Nice cap remains on this one, and leaves rings of lacing down the sides of the pint.

S - Smell some dark chocolate on the nose.

T - The taste is very nice. Some roasted flavors over the taste of dark chocolate. The finish comes up with that "bitter" chocolate taste of baker's chocolate.

M - Has a nice body, on the fuller side of a medium bodied beer. Carbonation is done nicely, just enough to back up the feel and flavor of this beer.

D - A nice stout to sip. Alcohol is well hidden and the flavors are big but do not pack the punch of many Impy stouts. However the complexity also is toned down a little bit from its imperial/double brothers. Still a nice, big tasting stout with an interesting and different flavor.

Pours jet black with a dark brown head. In the aroma, sweet chocolate and a oatmeal sweetness. In the taste, chocolateand a small oatmeal, with a nice amlty backing. A smooth and big mouthfeel, and a semi sweet chocolate aftertaste. Big chocolate, sweet and dry, and hides the alcohol very well.

Pours a beautiful dark black with a small tan/caramel head. Smells of coffee and chocolate dominate followed by the aroma of roasted malts. Fairly light bodied for a 9.2% ABV. The chocolate is yummy and not as bitter as the name would indicate. This is quite tasty and a real pleasure.

Semi aggresive pour brings a pitch black color with a bubbly 2 finger cocoa colored head. Plenty of sticky lacing on glass.

Smells of chocolate, some dark fruit, malted milk. All somewhat subdued.

Roasted/toasted flavor with some plum/fig character, slightly smoky, coffee flavors, booze, & rich bittersweet chocolate & hops in the finish. Lots going on here.

Full bodied, creamy, moderately carbonated.

One bottle shared with another person was good.

Interesting brew. Seems a little rough around the edges. I'd guess this would do well with some time in the cellar. I'll try this mixed with some lambic as well.

Appearance: Profoundly black; 100% opaque, glossy, eight-ball black. Head is a bit small, nougaty coffee-brown with fairly weak retention (but at 9.2% ABV that's understandable).

Smell: Lots of coffee and chocolate with an unexpected hint of sweet cinnamon - like chocolate horchata or something! A bouquet of liqueur-like alcohol pokes through the darkness: Kahlua, Cointreau, Ouzo. Mint, possibly from the hops, also comes through to brighten things up a bit. A touch of honey is also apparent, as well as whiskey, Raisinets, and vanilla.

Taste: Lots of booze and plenty of chocolate! Very reminiscent of a Brandy Alexander or a chocolate martini. Smooth and sweet, but with a nice, sharp finish and a shadow of bitterness. There is some fruity sweetness to it, too, a bit like strawberries and a bit citric, like lemon or grapefruit pith; towards the finish a vanilla/brown sugar/citrus flavor emerges, suggesting rum and coke. Slightly nutty as well. The hops are well-integrated, and combined with the chocolate itself, the beer is quite nicely bittered, especially in the chocolatey yet dry finish.

Mouthfeel: Finely carbonated and thick, smooth as crushed velvet and remarkably dry.

Drinkability: A delicious and complex double stout that isn't too aggressive and maintains a nice balance. Excellent work (again) from Stone, more enjoyable, in my opinion, than their standard RIS.

A - Served in a New Belgium globe glass. Ever seen a gargoyle on a bicycle? Dark. Very dark. The pour looked almost thick like oil. Looked like pouring an RIS. Decent head the color of frothy coffee.

S - Can smell it already from here. sweet and roasty chocolates. Its a scent that warms you. More on the sweet side, almost like a cookie. They should make a candle that smells like this.

T - Smooth chocolate, not particularly sweet more bitter. Some coffee characteristic. Again, some of an RIS characteristic. Getting better as it warms

M - Medium mouthfeel and more boozy than I would have guessed a 9.2% to taste. Bit of a warming feel to it.

D - It is what it is. Not one that you'd drink all nite, but not a bad choice to sip after dinner. Now if I only had a nicely lit fireplace and a cozy blanket.

One of the better beers I've had recently. Recommended. It pours dark, but actually doesn't taste or feel as dark as it looks. Taste is very good, easy to drink. Definitely lots of chocolate - and I like that. This beer is quite good, but not like some other Stones. I also prefer a Samuel Smith or an Old Rasputin - a little more interesting to me, but this is very good.

Purchased at Kokoman in New Mexico.

The beer poured a viscous, thick black crude, with a dirty brown head into a pint glass. A strong burnt toast/roasted malt smell. The taste was of bitter black malt (maybe a touch of the un-sweetened chocolate as well) and burnt toast, which got more and more pronounced with each sip. The alcoholic phenols were quite evident as well, making this taste exactly like the big-time, high gravity beer that Stone is known for, especially with its anniversary brews. Not something to be chugged, but savored slowly.

a: a roughish pour produces about a half inch of the darkest head I've ever seen, like a very dark chocolate milk, retention is quality, with a new head released by each tilt of the glass, the beer itself is black in color

s: dark chocolate nibs and chocolate barley balanced with a lightly astringent dark roasted barley...I should note that the chocolate is just about perfectly excecuted, adding dry depth but no or little sweetness...light french roast coffee, nice touch of smokehouse in the background, oatmeal seems to smooth everything out, some welcome ethanol heat, hops are there for sure but take a backseat to the slew of roast, nearing 4.5 territory

m: carbonation on the low side of medium, fullis but not overly heavy body

t: a chocolate-roast malt body and moderate flavors of dark chocolate make up the bulk of the flavor, the chocolate bitterness kicks in just before that of the hops, malt and chocolate completely envelop the hops as to disguise most of their their flavor, finishes roasty and very long...it's a little brusque to call a beer such as this "bland", but while it's certainly a quality beer and I really like how the chocolate and roasts are done, I did expect a bit more complexity from it, but I do appreciate that it pulls off "chocolate" without becoming a sweet candy beer

d: easy, an enjoyable bomber

S - Roasted malt and chocolate.

T - Wow. Bitter from the chocolate, smooth from the oatmeal. Bitter linger.

M - Thick, mouth coating. Creamy, little carbonation.

D - It's good, but at the ABV, one's the limit.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a pint glass. 08/05/08.

Pours thick and pitch black with a thin one finger dense brown head. The head settled to a thin layer pretty quickly and left some lacing around the glass. Aromas of roasted malt and lots of chocolate.

Taste is lots of chocolate. Starts with sweet milk chocolate and ends with bitter dark chocolate. Very subtle kick of hop flavor at the end. Plenty of roasted malt flavor as well.

Feel is very smooth with just the right amount of carbonation. Full body and fairly thick. Leaves a sticky coating around the mouth. Drinkability is really good. It's not too thick or powerful, and the alcohol is pretty well hidden.

A bit pricey (~$6 or 7) but it's worth it. I haven't had many Stone beers, but this is one of my favorites.

A: This is one of the blackest, thickest beers I've seen. Like pouring oil into a pint glass. Black/dark espresso brown with a thin mocha brown head with little retention.

S: Toasty malt smell, with a strong sense of milk chocolate. Hint of oatmeal. A very nice smell.

T: Wow, simply delicious. Smooth, love the chocolate and oatmeal flavors together. Like drinking gorp. There is a slight hop flavor in the finish which is a nice compliment. Not overpowering, just enough to show you it is there. Very similar to Young's Double Chocolate, just with a small kick of hops. Really, really good. After a while, you get a strong alcohol flavor on the tongue.

M: Thick, chewy - just like a stout should be.

D: This is one of the best stouts I've ever had. ABV is 9.2% so it will take care of you for a while. It's smooth and the flavors are amazing together. A little strong on the hops for a stout, but it is a welcome change. Wow, just a great beer.
