Stone Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout
12th Anniversary
22 oz brown bottle
Served in a tulip 20 oz glass

Pours an opaque black with a wonderful head on top. The head is a light brown with a fluffy quality. Excellent retention, leaving trails of sticky lacings all over the glassware.

Pleasant nose with whiffs of roasted coffee, sweetness and hops.

Strong espresso flavors mixed bitter dark chocolate. The chocolate flavors are super intense with hints of cocoa drenched in a caramel drizzle. Hints of dark fruit - maybe cherries. I also get a touch of a cream and sugar sweetness, perhaps a little whip cream too. This brew is like a Milk Stout on steroids. The finish is hoppy with a significant bite.

The mouthfeel is excellent and very smooth with a nice softness. Deceptively smooth at 9.2% ABV.

Man, I haven't had an imperial stout this good in quite some time. A great beer in all aspects. I wish I had another bomber of this to enjoy tonight. Yet another well crafted offering from Stone.

A: Nice and dark with a thin but decent off white head. Looks great and I love when no light can penetrate.

S: Nice rich aroma. Typical of a big stout but with a lot more chocolate and roast in the nose. I know the name is bitter chocolate, but it smells like sweet chocolate.

T: Now there's the bitterness! Damn, they really hit the nail on the head with this one. I get bitter chocolate in the taste and that silky smooth character from the oatmeal. Choklat from Southern Tier was too sweet for me but this is perfect.

M: Nice and smooth with a touch of an edge from the bitterness. Medium bodied in reality but during the blast of flavor it seems even more full bodied than that.

D: Great...one of the best beers Stone has put out in a while.

Pours near opaque black. Dark brown head. Sexy beer.

Nose is dark roasted coffee-ish with dark chocolate, chocolate cakebox.

Palate is deceived when it comes to alcohol - this ale delivers nougat-chocolate up front, rather dark chocolatey in fact, and a slight hop tang to round it out at the finish.

This is a very "sweet" flavored beer, dark chocolatey, and deceptively easy to drink. An amazing offering from Stone!

Served at Bukowski's in Cambrige in a 12oz tumbler.

A - Black with a nice foamy cafe con leche colored head that slowly faded.

S - Dark bitter chocolate, coffee, and alcohol

T - Tastes like it smells, heavy chocolate and alcohol, but not overwhelming. The alcohol hits you early but fades in the aftertaste.

M - Smooth and creamy. mmmm

D - Too heavy to drink very many too smooth to not have another sip. Think about boozy milkshakes.

Serve and savor on cool rainy Sundays

A=Deep mahogany with a thin cola brown head. Fades fast.

S=Roasted Coffee, Alcohol, Chocolate

T/M=Surprisingly dry with a thin body and lingering finish. Flavors of bitter chocolate and port wine. A pleasant, balanced character.

O=I will definitely have this again.

Pours black, the darkest I've ever seen, with a dark brown head that fades fast. No highlights, no light passes through even when held against a lightbulb. Smell is malty and sweet with smoky overtones, and some nice chocolate notes. The taste starts smoky and sweet, then moves to a sweet flavor with chocolate notes and finishes with the alcohol tones. The mouthfeel is heavy and smooth, a nice balance of flavor, with intricate notes throughout the beer. This is has a nice drinkability, a nice ABV that doesn't restrict finishing the bomber. A beer that is a must, everyone should give this one a go.

A Christmas gift (22 oz bottle), which I served to myself in a Cognac glass.

Pours opaque black with a dark mocha head, thick and creamy in appearance. The beer itself is very still and appears to oscillate like gelatin when agitated, a sure sign of its immense body.

A sweet aroma. Chocolate (cocoa powder to be specific), caramel. Subtle roasted character.

Oh man, this tasted so good. I didn't get punched in the face with alcohol but rather lulled into relaxation by a velvety smooth bitter cocoa flavor. Rich like a moist Devil's Food cake. With caramel topping. The chocolate bitterness really takes the stage in the aftertaste and builds upon the palate as the bottle is emptied. And as much as I keep saying "bitter" there's also plenty of sweetness to speak of here.

Amazingly smooth and drinkable. Oatmeal + chocolate = YES. Would love to see this in regular production.

Pours as black as any beer I've ever seen. About one finger of brown head that faded with little lacing.

Smells like roasted malt with an amazing chocolate smell. I don't really detect much alcohol.

The chocolate is prevelant throughout without taking over. Has a smoky taste. This is a damn fine stout. Has a warm finish, I have no experience with aging, but from what I've read the bottle I have stashed now should mellow out a bit.

The mouthfeel is about what I expected, perfect for a stout.

22 ounces will be enough for a sitting, and above 9 abv more than the 22oz might take me from sitting to laying down.

I have one extra bottle stashed, I'm giving strong consideration to going back to the stor to pick up a few more. They will make a fantastic gift for the holidays (keep a few for myself as a special gift to myself).

Stone has yet to let me down and this is no exception, they may have raised the bar a bit further.

A-- BLACK!! 1 1/2 finger head of mocha and nice lacing
S-- Chocolate bitterness and espresso/strong coffee
T-- Cocoa bitterness roasted malts and coffee. Wonderful balance of everything here
M-- SILKY SMOOTH dense and chewy
D-- Not so much in the summer but durnig the colder days I can sit with a few of this ...see how it is a room temp

On tap at Fatheads, South Side of Pittsburgh.

Dark, dark brown-to-black with thick, brown head. The goblet in which it was served wasn't the most conducive to lacing but some was there anyway. Surprising carbonation, given the style[s] of this.

Light chocolate hints over basic toasted malt. Some sweetness in nose. Minor alcohol. Pleasant.

Flavor: Perfect balance of bitterness and oat-y malt. Light chocolate again, serving as a bittering agent, apparently, as the bitterness of unsweetened cocoa is much more represented than the traditional "sweet" chocolate flavor you often find in chocostouts. **BTW, I figured that out BEFORE I read the description on the wall stating the bitter chocolate was acting in lieu of hops. I was pretty proud of myself after that.**

Good mouth feel, a bit on the dry side. Not unexpected given the higher level of carbonation noted in the appearance.

Could drink this all day. Or at least until the alcohol poisoning kicks in. Another Stone brew where the high alcohol is masked by the tremendous flavoring. 4.5 instead of a 5 only because of the stealth ethanol.

Bottom line: another Stone Anniversary success. X was great. XI was better. XII is really, really good too.

Body perfectly black. The head a wonderfully dark tan/light brown froth.

Enticing aroma is powerful with roasted coffee, which is a surprise because while this is an imperial/chocolate/oatmeal stout, its not a coffee stout. Smells great though.

The chocolate certainly show up in the taste. Thick and rich from the first sip. Followed by some roast coffee notes. Sneaky hop bite rides out of the coffee at the swallow. Chocolate returns to carry into the aftertaste.

Silky smooth slick mouthfeel. Oatmeal does a good job.

Yes its a BA cliche, but its dangerously drinkable.

One of Stone's best efforts, wich is saying something.

Multiple 22 oz bombers over its run. Beautiful dark pour with a light brown medium sized head. They don't stint on the bitterness in the chocolate, which could have been a novelty but paid off quite well. Well balanced with a little bit of sweetness in the body so as to not turn off pickier drinkers. I'm going to miss this one when it's gone.

This looks as thick and stout as any beer I have ever put into a glass. Thick and oily looking. Black, and black again! Thin tan head similar to thier russian imperial stout.

Smells flat. Nothing really stands out. Some coffie, raisons, old oil smells, maybe even artificial smoke? Not too impressed with the smell....no hops.

Tastes incredible. I HAVE to compare this with their russian imperial stout. Just add more bitterness, more dark chocolates, take out the hops, more booze, and more smoke/burnt roastiness, and you have this wonderfull origianl concoxion. Bitter is the word. Not many will like this one.

Moutfeel is creamy with medium carbonation. The bitterness has a great effect on the mouthfeel. The creamyness comes from the oatmeal, I would assume. But the bitterness is in your face all the way through. Wonderfull chocolate and booze bitterness and "burn" make this beer one orginal masterpiece!

Thanks to Kaiser81 for trading this one to me.

Pours black with a brown head. Aroma is sweet roasted malt with a strong bitter chocolate component. The flavor is lots of coffee. Chocolate is present as well with it beginning as a darker almost milk chocolate and ending with a bitter finish. Very creamy thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation. I love stouts that include oatmeal and this is one of the best ones I have had.

Had it out of a bottle for the 1st time

Poured black as night with a small lace around the outside of the glass, when you hold this directly to the light the head and edges nearly look blue.

Smell is bitter chocolate, sweet oatmeal, like a cookie, with very sweet and roasted malts both.

Beer does not taste any better than this it has all that you want from a stout the nice alcohol undertones with the bittersweet chocolate and rich malts but then has an amazing sweetness that makes you feel like you are drinking an oatmeal creame pie.

Mouth is rich and thich very creamy which coats the inside out your mouth, heavy body

This is the kind of beer i wish was available and I could get more of, but on the other hand would feel incrediblly spoiled if I could. High ABVbrings it down a few points here as I cant imagine someone sitting down and having much more than 1.

660ml bomber, served at very chilly room temperature from a Delerium Tremens goblet

Pours with a deep dark caramel tinged brown, more or less opaque less the fringes of the glass. Its topped off with a dense, tight espresso frothed head, only a few millimetres thick. Some tiny dots of dark stained leather hued bubbles around the edges of the glass. Soon settles to a think whisp on the top

Smell, thick rich toffee and caramel exude from the glass along with dark rum tinged boozy notes, however slight they are. Some marzipan and rose water along with treacle and rich tobacco notes hinged on fruity bubblegum esters. Dark rich chocolate along with tonnes of rich espresso with esscence of old leather and bitter cocoa.

Taste, smooth and silky oiliness all over the palette, reminisant of a cohiba soaked in butter and cognac. Silky initially followed by a whack of spicy, bitter rich chocolate. Rich slick melted dark chocolate, almost fizzy sherbet mouthfeel at times, followed on the finish by slick, opulent roasted malt bitterness with a touch of dark soy, not the saltiness however. No noticable off flavours, some hops to punctuate the rich chocolate character however are not excessive in their addition. The beer culminates with a strong kick of bitter, dark rum or rich bourbon booze.

A superbly flavourful and rich chocolate imperial stout. Very prominent bitter coffee and chocolate adorn the palette and balanced with some hop presence help to balance the beer. Not the most balanced beer I've had the pleasure of drinking however huge on flavour and overall depth this is definatly one to pick up

22 oz. bottle.

Pours a very deep brown with light brown thin head. Lots of lacing. Smell is roasty with dark cocoa, coffee and alcohol. Taste backs the label up very well...bitter, chocolate and oatmeal in a big way. The beer is slightly astringent and tangy, in a good balance to the sweet notes. Mouth feel is good, but it is a tad too carbonated for the beer in my opinion. This is also a big beer in terms of alcohol, so it probably can't be had all night. If you like oatmeal stouts this should be on your list, very good.

Edit: Upon having another... Still love the beer, but toning back the score a tad.

Pours thick and pitch black with a dark brown head. Even held up to the light, nothing comes through. No highlights, no brownness, nothing.

Smell is a blend of bitter, but fresh, coffee and dark chocolate.

I know everyone has a bitterness threshold, and a few years ago this would've been too much for me, but now it is perfect. Smooth dark chocolate flavors dominate. They become even smoother and more pronounced as the beer warms. Also flavors of delicious roasted coffee, burnt toast, and a suprisingly heavy dose of hops that blend in well.

Mouthfeel was flawless. Perfect carbonation. Frothy and creamy.

This beer truly gets better as it warms. The bitterness is well balanced, and the 9.2 ABV is well masked, leaving just a warming feeling. I will definitely be buying another before they run out.

man!!.. i wish i had cases and cases of this brew, it lives up to the stature of an anniversary beer most definetly ... "i will never love an otter" ... wow, lots of dark chocolate and bitter chocolate in the aroma and taste department ... pours a dark brown .. just plain delicious!! ..nuff said

A- Pours a thick motor oil black body with a chocolaty brown head that gained rising speed as I poured, overflowing the sides of the glass. Fair lacing.

S- Awesome aroma. Dark chocolate, some coffee. Some sour characteristics. I think I can sense a hint of oatmeal...

T- Silky mouthfeel. Not as rich as I expected, and a reoccuring coppery taste that I keep running into recently...hope it's not my taste buds. I taste a lot of cherry and a medium fluffy chocolate taste, not much bitterness though. Complex flavors and lots of them, good carbonation, kind of light. Flovor sticks with you for a while. Great beer besides that weird copper taste.

D- Very drinkable.

I gave this beer a perfect in both appearance and smell because I really do think it was perfect in these respects. Enormous four-fingers of fully brown head that has a wonderful cascading effect. Completely opaque from every angle. The aroma was that of sugar oatmeal cookies, very rich dark chocolate, caramel and slight spiciness underneath. Loved it!

Taste is that of espresso and sweet chocolate. Other flavors that came through were caramel and nuts. Very bitter with some hoppy, grassy flavors. Warming alcohol at the end makes for a great finish. Very great beer

I've never had an oatmeal imperial before. Who better than Stone to break me in? I mean, it won't be gentle, but I'll never forget it. The beer pours a midnight black into the pint glass. There's a wispy tan head that doesn't stick around and leaves no trace of lacing.

The smell is a big hit of bitter baking chocolate, with a strong compliment of toasted malt. Smells like somebody's getting ready to bake something good.

The taste is absolutely wonderful. Bitter, bitter, bitter dark chocolate rules the day. I've been looking for a beer to take advantage of the bittering aspect of chocolate, and does this baby ever deliver. Like a kick in the teeth. The bitterness is complimented by the toasted malt, as in the smell. There's a slight doughy flavor, along with perhaps some raisins.

The taste goes down with a ludicrously smooth mouthfeel. I'm told that's the oatmeal doing its thing. Very thick and sticky. Low carbonation. The booze becomes more detectable as it warms. Another great beer from Stone, and a nice change of pace from their usual offerings. As bitter, but in a different way.

This was poured from a bomber that had been aged for 2 years.
The pour was black as night with a rich tan head. The smell of delicious roasted malt, chocolate, and some oaty notes. Then came the best part....taste. It had a chewy mouthfeel that was followed by mellowed out chocolate flavors, mixed with some hearty roasted notes and finished clean. I wish I could try this beer again.

Appearance - quite the glug glug oily pour. Once again into the Beer & Sweat glass, lots of thick dark mocha foam spring up, planting a thick coating of lace-paint on the glass.

Aroma - very earthy soy-like grains, a bit of cola sweetness, soapy at times. Background roastiness, some more roast would be nice, but it smells good.

Taste - there is no mistaking the bitterness of the chocolate with the deep roast of the grain. The combo is perhaps put together to accomodate a lesser hop bill? It's bitter, that's for sure. A side effect flavor of licorice. The chocolate is not quite as strong as the basic bitter flavor, but it's there. The charred grain is actually a little more visible, at least fresh. Bittersweet chocolate on the swallow is about 75/25 bitter to sweet, but it's tasty. Several years ago, I was sampling chocolates with increasing percentages of cocoa, up to 75 and 80 per cent. They begin to take on a serious chocolate taste that becomes increasingly un-candylike. You get accustomed to that, two things happen: 1) to hell with Hershey's and 2) nobody likes your chocolate so you get more! Bogartski in reverse, sort of. That's what this beer makes me think of, anyway. A good, pure cocoa flavor that Crackle and M&M fans may not care for. It doesn't take long before the warming alcohol adds to the mix. The lack of sweetness makes for a rather intense beer, and while I dig the method, at least a breath of sweetness would really help balance the cocoa. I may try a glass with a shot of Kahlua in it just to see what a touch of sugar does. The long finish is very warm with abv, unsweetened chocolate, and charred grain.

Mouthfeel - dreamy smooth, I'm dreaming of winter in late July. Heavy, thick and coating.

Drinkability - while this will be a most enjoyable study to see how cellaring affects the profile, I'm sure to have one or two more this year.

I was lucky to find some of these in Palmdale already aged a year form me. Pours a jet black with a light brown head which left some decent lacing.

Smells like chocolate, coffee, malts & some alcohol.

Taste is bitter chocolate, some coffee, malt sweetness with a little alcohol warming at the end.

Has a nice silky mouthfeel, very smooth

Very drinkable as far as taste goes. However, 9.2 ABV does not a session beer this make.

A very nice Imperial Stout, one of the best.
