Another impressive beer from Stone, reminding me very much of the RIS, but with (predictably) more of a chocolate overtone.

On tap at Mahaffey's the other day.

The beer pours a solid black color with persistent, chocolate/coffee colored head. Head retention is pretty good and there is good sticky lacing. The nose on this beer is pretty complex, with coffee, cherry, vanilla, chocolate, some roastiness and licorise. The flavors on the palate generally replicate the nose, except the licorise is even more pronounced. The beer has a sizable presence on the palate and tastes like a big beer (which of course, it is). While moderately sweet initially, the hops come on strong at the end, giving the beer almost a grainy mouthfeel. The beer finishes fairly dry, and frankly is a bit heavy and tiring. I think the finish hurts this beers drinkability just a bit, though it's certainly an impressive effort from Stone. I get the impression that this one may improve considerably with age, not unlike the Stone RIS. Still a solid beer.

I've had this from 22 oz. bombers (one that has met its fate with the ceramic tile of the kitchen floor...yes I'm ashamed)...
But I thought that it would be a better/more fair rating from a tap...

Poured into the glass (both from the tap and bottle), as perfect as a glass of motor oil...(as many other posts have stated)...I would say like New Jersey Lake Sludge (I can't wait for the replies on that one...I've looked for my own snipes (as a kid) thank you very much...)...

The taste mellows out while the pour gets warmer, much like the bottle.

The alcohol taste is more apparent as it warms..., but I would not say that it has such an "oatmeal taste", I was expecting more of a Rogue Chocolate Stout meets/ Sammy Smith's...but for all around it was good.

...It definitely has its own character and holds up on its own...I am interested to see how this brew ages...(like other posts have stated).

Pours very black in color with a small tannish head that fades quickly into nothing. No lacing.

Dark bitter chocolate, who would of thunk. Cocoa and hints of vanilla and grain. Very grainy and in your face. Caramel and black fruit esters.

Very bitter and chocolatey with a nice silky smoothness from the oats. Black currant and anise fight each other in the background. Nice alcohol on the finish with caramel, slight vanilla, bakers chocolate, cocoa, roasted malts with a hint of tobacco and spent coffee grains. A very nice beer that could use a little time for the unsweetened chocolate tannins to surrender.

On tap at Fatheads, South Side of Pittsburgh.

Dark, dark brown-to-black with thick, brown head. The goblet in which it was served wasn't the most conducive to lacing but some was there anyway. Surprising carbonation, given the style[s] of this.

Light chocolate hints over basic toasted malt. Some sweetness in nose. Minor alcohol. Pleasant.

Flavor: Perfect balance of bitterness and oat-y malt. Light chocolate again, serving as a bittering agent, apparently, as the bitterness of unsweetened cocoa is much more represented than the traditional "sweet" chocolate flavor you often find in chocostouts. **BTW, I figured that out BEFORE I read the description on the wall stating the bitter chocolate was acting in lieu of hops. I was pretty proud of myself after that.**

Good mouth feel, a bit on the dry side. Not unexpected given the higher level of carbonation noted in the appearance.

Could drink this all day. Or at least until the alcohol poisoning kicks in. Another Stone brew where the high alcohol is masked by the tremendous flavoring. 4.5 instead of a 5 only because of the stealth ethanol.

Bottom line: another Stone Anniversary success. X was great. XI was better. XII is really, really good too.

This is a great example of an extreme beer done well. It's thick, flavorful, roasty, and chocolaty, but it's not over the top. I could easily have a few pints. It is, however, a cold weather beer. The oatmeal thickens it up quite a bit without sweetening it. There are some phenols on the nose, but they get lost in everything else. I'm looking forward to this in the bottle.

A - Had this on draft. It is pitch black with no light coming through it all. It has roughly 1/2 finger of creamy tan head that didn't really leave any lacing.

S - A roasted aroma, chocolate, and a small alcohol smell is emitted from this brew.

M - A full bodied beer that has a nice smoothness to it and a good amount of carbonation.

T - It tastes similar to how it smells. Dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, and a slight bitterness create a fairly complex flavor. There is also an alcohol taste present, but it is hidden pretty well.

A very good brew, I'd like to try it later after it ages. I could probably only have one of these in a sitting because of the abv and thickness of it.

On tap at the Parish Publick House in Santa Cruz. Totally black with bright brown foam that leaves sheets of lace. Aroma is roasty with baker's chocolate and some dark fruitiness. Flavor is off the charts roasty with just enough body and sweetness to keep it from charring the tongue. Similar to dark chocolate-infused coffee. Very smooth and creamy, no trace of the 9.2% abv. This beer toes the line between stout and imperial stout nicely. Another top notch Stone beer.

On tap at Shady McGrady's in Harrisburg, PA on 7/25/08.

A - Dark chocolate brown body with more than a finger's width of frothy mocha-colored head that left decent lacing around the glass. This puppy reminded me of a milkshake!

S - Surprisingly muted nose with faint notes of dark chocolate and a bit of coffee. Some roasted malt as well, but overall the aroma is quite subdued.

T - Chocolate and roasted malt up front that quickly seques into more of a bitter coffee aspect with a dash of earthy hops for good measure.

M - Smooth, creamy texture with a bit of oily slickness and a slightly chewy mouthfeel. Finishes moderately bitter on the palate.

D - Not as chocolately as, say, Suthern Tier Choklat, but still highly drinkable for such a big beer (9.2% ABV). Nice bitterness all around with this one.

A-Beautiful! Black with no highlights....with a BIG, thick, creamy looking mocha head. Left mucho lacing behind.

S-Faint....gets a bit better as it warmed though. Light smokiness, bitter chocolate and a bit of espresso.

T-What it lacks in aroma is made up in tatse! Mmmmm...rich, full flavoured bitter chocolate meld with blasts of espresso and dark roasted malt. A tiny twinge of smoke creeps in late.

M-Medium-heavy body with a full, smooth richness. Long lingering bitterness.

D-This is like a dessert beer. Smooth, rich and flavourful. Even at 9%+ this is one to grab a snifter of a relax with by a fire!

Had on-tap at the Chase Taproom. This beer impresses even more from the tap. Creamier, better emphasis on the oat silkiness, and stronger chocolate flavors. Lightly carbonated like most English ales, the beer weighs a little heavier to the mouth, but fuller, rounder, richer and without the carbonic bite found in the bottle.

After reading all the hype about this beer, I couldn't wait to get my paws on a bomber. Finally, the beer arrives in Lexington and I had the pleasure to share it with family and friends. The very thick beer slowly flows into the glass with a velvety appearance and a marshmellow-y head formation that lasted til the last sip, adding a lot of lacing and legging on the glass. Aromas were subdued, but offered a rich milky, chocolate, coffee scent that balanced well, pure, and clean. Low esters, fruits, alcohols, and phenols to the nose makes the beer purely inviting. Flavors favor the chocolates giving a brownie-cocoa rich taste with complimentary notes of near espresso / nutty columbian notes. The oates (and I suspect light milk sugars) gives the beer the needed sweetness and full flavor that tempers the cocoa-coffee aggression. Again the fruits and spices are very moderate allowing the true choco-java-milkshake character to dominate. Even the bitterness of hops balance well with the coffee bitterness and sourness to offset the remarkable malt backbone. Finishes with a round chocolate flavor and coffee bitterness. This is one pheonominal beer and I suspect that 6-9 months of age will bring the flavors together even better.

I first had a goblet from a bottle, followed by a goblet from tap.

I am not a fan of big chocolate, so I was nervous of what an extreme brewery like Stone could do with this. But I was very happy with the results.

Common to both bottle and tap:

Syrupy darkness

It is nice to see what Stone can do when hops are not the focus.

Bottle:

Dark head that diminished slowly.

Probably served too cold initially, but this had an unusually sweet smell like bazooka joe bubble gum. After it came down in temperature, chocolate became obvious

Tap:

Almost no head at all, but carbonation in mouth was fine.

Very well balanced start to finish

I had this on tap at Pure Luck this week. I was surprised to see it there.

It looks very dark and, honestly, a bit imposing for someone who may shy away from darker beers. Smell is distinctly alcoholic and gives a resin-y sensation, which nicely sets you up for a beer that isn't saturated by a searing alcholic taste, but rather a roasty, dark chocolate sort of flavor. I found it difficult to drink this at first- the burst of cocoa was a bit overpowering. But as my mouth adjusted, the subtle underlying elements came to surface. I think this is a fine effort by Stone, though their last two Anniversary ales were more my preference.

Poured from a July 2008-dated bottle into a large snifter. Served at cellar temp. Cap came off with a nice pop—thank goodness! Even pouring carefully, a few chunks plop into the glass.

Appearance: Very very dark. No light passes through, even held directly up to the light. Very minimal head, but what there is sticks around.

Smell: Some grape notes, chocolate, molasses, port, lots of wood, a little vinegary tartness. More like a RIS than an American Stout.

Taste: Honestly, pretty anxious about drinking this—it's almost 6 years old, and I have no idea how it's been treated during that time. But, the first sip doesn't kill me, and doesn't contain any off notes! Lots of roasty chocolate, with a fair amount of fruity sweetness—maybe brandied figs or something. I'd believe this had been aged in red wine or port bottles. There's also a strong component of smoke. The aftertaste is really phenomenal. I don't know if the taste is actually perfect, but it's really delicious, and seems unique.

Feel: It's a 6-year-old oatmeal stout, and feels like it: smoooth. And still a bit prickly!

Overall: This review feels a bit like a pointless exercise, as I doubt there are more than a few dozen bottles of this left out there, but if you have one, drink it now—I can't imagine it'll get better with more age. And if you see one, buy it!

July 2008 bottling date. Approaching six years old.

A: Pours pitch, pitch black. Very large and dense medium brown head. Head fade slowly with great retention. Decent lacing still.

S: Aroma is quite mellow. Baker's chocolate. Grainy oatmeal. Light dark fruit, might be a hint of sherry-like oxidation.

T: Super smooth bittersweet chocolate. Lots of grainy oatmeal in the middle and in the finish. Oatmeal really calms down the bitterness I think. Some mild fruitiness that might be the start of oxidation in the aftertaste but it's not bad at all. No sign of alcohol but it does warm the belly. Lingering light sherry and chocolate between sips.

M: Surprisingly thin but given the age it makes sense.

O: Interestingly enough I just found this beer on the shelves today so I had to pick it up. It has fared quite well. Flavors are very well integrated and mellowed out. It might say "bitter chocolate" but it's not bad at all. Perhaps age has smoothed it out or the oatmeal has calmed it down. Body is surprisingly light so the drinkability is off the charts for a 9.2% stout.

Holy cow, this is delicious. I never had it fresh and it being a few years old I wasn't sure what to expect. Slight head, with a very dark brown color. A nice nose of bakers chocolate with a taste of bitter chocolate, molasses, and coffee roastiness. Wish Stone would bring this back as I want more

22 oz. bottle served in a Deschutes snifter. Thanks stxSS07 for the share.

A: Pours a dark black color with a dark mocha head forming on the pour. It recedes quickly to a thin ring that leaves some splotchy lace down the glass.

S: Some oxidation as you would expect, but in a sherry kind of way. No real paper or cardboard notes, but slightly dark and pretty fruity. Dark chocolate bitterness with some dried oats.

T: Much like the nose. Bitter dark chocolate, steel cut oats, light dark fruit with minimal oxidation. The booze is well hidden behind a touch a char.

M: Medium thick bodied with a lower carbonation level. Smooth and creamy finish.

O: This held up very nicely and the slight oxidation gave it a dark fruit character that complimented the bitter dark chocolate nicely.

Thanks to angrybabboon for sharing the bottle. 4 years aged.

Appearance: Near black. Tiny dark reddish tan collar. No head. Minimal carbonation. Pours still and creamy.

Smell: Sweet roasted malts. Some toasted d edges buried under it all. Dark worn leather, oxidized.sherry, dark fruit mainly cherry and plum. Big hits of cocoa and milk chocolate. Chocolate covered cherry. Some touches of coffee, old and raw. Bitter edge of cocoa. Some thing akin to marshmallow. Deep rich chocolate dessert.

Taste: Bitter chocolate. Rough edge of baker's chocolate. Some cocoa. Nice edges of old coffee. Big roasted profile. Vaguely burnt with some lingering char. Deeply bitter in the baking way. Dark fruit, some nice hints of ripe cherry and plum. Even some raisin. Oxidation has given this a nice sherry/boozy edge. Less rough.

Mouthfeel: Moderate to heavy body. No carbonation. Very creamy and smooth.

Overall: 4 years later it's still solid.

I had this new and fresh and I've had it a few more times since then. It's always good and always worth drinking. Stone can do stouts without overdoing it. Age has made this a new beer and it's worth it.

An essay on the back of the bottle...just talks about how the hop shortage affected the 12th anniversary beer in that they were somewhat forced to brew a more malt forward beer and utilize something else for "bitterness."

Poured into a large tulip glass. A very long and viscous pour developed a dense, creamy, tight brown head on top of an extremely dark brown body, verging on black.

This serious looking beer has a bold aroma. Many of the usual suspects: dark chocolate, coffee, raisins, Bailey's Irish cream and some sweet booze.

A dynamic beer to say the least. When it was chilled, I got more of the roast barley malt and a wonderful, rich chocolate aftertaste. As it has warmed, more aromas and flavors start to pop, and as the beer approaches room temperature, the booziness becomes enhanced, though never becomes "hot." Just does end up with an almost solvent character. Bitter chocolate, coffee, creamy...

Flavors were similar to aroma. Now at room temperature (just below) it actually becomes slightly unpleasant, though I wonder if that was because I poured in the "chunks" at the bottom of the bottle...should have left that out.

The body of the beer is medium heavy with a very smooth texture and plenty of carbonation for the style.

This was an enjoyable beer. I am glad I aged it for four years, because apparently it used to be "hot" and that's never good. I think the age mellowed the beer's alcohol burn, added a layer of complexity with maybe a touch of oxidation, and allowed the chocolate to come through better. Definitely though it needs to be chilled before consumption.

I would suggest this with any dense, rich, chocolate dessert, like lava cake or flourless chocolate torte.

Poured into a snifter. Dark jet black, no highlights. Small one finger head that is cocoa colored and creamy in appearance. Lace is fairly minimal at this point but as to be expected for this being 5 years old.

Smell is still sweet like I remember. Chocolate, dark fruits like fig or cherries, kind of jammy but remarkable.

Taste is not much like I remember that lazy night at the hotel across from Disneyland. The chocolate is for the most part gone and all that is left is the tart of the fruit and alcohol. Still quite tasty but a shell of it's former self.

Mouth is smooth and creamy, carbonation is on the bright side (especially for it's age) and the finish is short and on the dry side.

Overall I should thank dgb3 first, for sending me this last year so I would have a six year vertical anniversary. This isn't as good as I remember and probably past it's time but still a solid Oatmeal Stout. I think if you ran across this it is a must buy but to spend the money to trade for this at this point isn't a great idea.

Received in a cellar-to-cellar trade. I figured this was probably near the end of its shelf life and I didn't wait too long to open it. I was rewarded with a wonderful beer that delivered so many tasting elements.

The beer developed very little head at, but many stouts at this ABV level don't. The smell gave off the promised bitter chocolate along with vanillin and boozy wood tones.

The first, and strongest, element in the taste was strong roasted malts, followed immediately by whiskey. Chocolate and vanilla lingered behind, making a weaker showing than I would have liked. Strongly bitter up front, like espresso without too much of a coffee flavor, with clean chocolate notes in the wash and aftertaste.

Silky and viscous with a touch of chalkiness. Really nice to take down slowly.

Served in a Stone 15th Anniversary snifter, this is a really nice beer. Beer is black with a one finger dark brown head of small bubbles, good retention, nice lacing, looks great.

Aroma is strong and chocolaty, with a mild roast.

Beer is medium in body and sweet with a nice late bitterness from the roast of the grains, the finish is clean and the midpalate is sweet with a nice chocolate flavor and a medium body. I really like it. I'd have it again.

22 oz. bomber poured into a Duvel Tulip style glass. Liquid comes out extremely dark brown with deep amber to brown highlights on the side. Head is a bit smaller than one finger thick, lots of different sized bubbles, slight glass retention from the head. The color of the head is sort of a mahogany/black cherry color to dark brown. The liquid itself provides some glass retention.

Smell is a huge malt bomb. Provides a dark, bitter chocolate smell, but not completely bitter. Some milk chocolate as well, even smells creamy, if that makes sense. Sort of a decadent chocolate sauce. Some dark coffee to espresso aromas as well, but sort of a back lash of it. The blend of all the aromas is absolutely great.

Taste is just as good, as perfect as it gets. Like the bottle says, plenty of dark bitter chocolate. Super dark fudge and some dark grains somewhere in the mix. There is some sweetness as well, sort of like espresso with hints of sugar. Milk chocolate as well. I can't quite figure it out, but there's almost a bourbon flavor and I don't think this is barrel aged.

Mouthfeel is perfect. Strong, full bodied. Great carbonation level, that's held up great since the aging. Smooth, creamy, thick to almost chewy mouthfeel, it's great. Hop presence detected in the mouthfeel. Great drinkability too, nice sipper, but way to easy to drink if you don't want to. On top of that, the value is perfect. I think this was like $7 when it was out as a seasonal. So bummed this beer is retired. I could drink it year round. Just a perfect beer to have around. I miss you Stone 12th! Huge props to everyone who traded with me for this beer over the last 3 years!

Bottled July 2008 & enjoyed on March 21st 2012

A: Pours a deep thick oily black. Seriously so damn dark with a dark beige brown head

S: You really get the roasty booze scent with lingering chocolate up front

T: The flavor has really held up in this beer with wonderful light carbonation with an almond nuttiness blend with roast and sweet chocolate. Raisins and figs fall through and are more noticeable at the finish

M: Very full bodies with light carbonation a medium sweetness that allows one to indulge in the entire bottle solo.

O: Has been cellared in proper conditions and it really shows. Flavors are bold & rich, complementing of each other with  every sip. Very pleased with this, and i still have 3 more tucked away.

A - Pours a dark motor-oil black with a dense mocha head that settles to a slight ring and haze.
S - Big aromas of bitter dark chocolate, roasted malt, and dark berries with a touch of soy sauce and smoke. Tiny bit of oxidation has crept in, but it's not a big deal.
T - Similar to the nose, lots of dark chocolate and roasted malt with some burnt toast, smoke, and soy sauce. Finish is long and bitter, similar to a 90% cocoa chocolate bar.
M - Smooth and more then a bit sticky, with a full mouthfeel and low carbonation. Quite decadent, but still surprisingly drinkable.
O - Such a great anniversary beer from Stone. Found this in an out-of-the-way liquor store and grabbed it in a heartbeat. One of the best investments I've made considering how well this has held up after 3 1/2 years.

JULY 2008 Vintage- 22oz bottle at about fridge temp poured into a boulevard tulip.

pours out opaque black with about one fingers worth of tan, light mocha colored head that eventually faded to a paper thin retentive layer. some spotty lace and a little bit of legs apparent from a swirl of the glass.

sweet toasted malts, bitter roasted malts are at the forefront. some hints of smokiness and some light cocoa as well.

slightly fruity toasted, roasted malts, a little bit of sweetness and a hint of smoke. some bitter dark cocoa towards the finish.

the lighter side of heavy bodied, carbonation is about right on for the style. maybe expected a little more oiliness from the oatmeal?

although i have had this fresh, i only vaguely remember what it tasted like. it was right when i was starting to get serious with craft beer and right before i began taking notes on what i was drinking. although this stood up to the age very well, a part of me wants to say this was better fresh.
