Cali-Belgique IPA is a very striking golden shade of amber. Only the slightest haze distorts what is ultimately a beer with excellent clarity. The puffy head after the initial pour seems like it wants to stay, but subsides to about 1/4" later. There is some moderate lacing left on the glass, and the beverage seems quite carbonated, as bubbles are seen rising top continuously.
The aroma is rich and alluring, though unexpected. Scents of port and wine, funky yeast, cranberry, kiwi, and grapefruit fill the nostrils, as well as bready grains. Interesting...
Flavor-wise, again, this is different than I imagined it would be. There are a lot of fruit esters present, for example, in addition to those already mentioned, I can pick up some granny smith apples, and plums. There's a decent bit of maltiness, in the form of a grainy taste, and even something in there that's sour.
It's really in the finish do the hops really pack a wallop, with a big, piny bitterness. The mouth feel is syrupy and full, for a beer of a relatively lower ABV. It's somewhat warming after each swallow. Although this is a little unusual for a Belgian IPA, it's complex, which I love and very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it and purchase it again.
