A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist
AKA Stone Cali-België IPA
First Release:
September 2008
Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Pours a slightly hazy sunny yellow, with fairly active carbonation bouncing up against a 1/4" white bubbly head. The Belgian yet certainly can be seen in the consistency of the bubbles in the head. The sugars in this beer give it nice head retention and lacing as you drink it down.
Has a very floral aroma, with a hint of spicy funk. Orange and other citrus overtones mix with the belgian yeast to produce that spicy funk that you don't typically associate with an IPA.
Starts with a piney, bitter hop taste that quicy gives way to a floral, citrusy, slightly spicy ale with mild malt and grassiness. There is a white grapefruit taste along the middle of the tongue that balances nicely against the sweet, floral tastes that dominate.
Medium bodied that had a lighter feel to it because of the Belgian yeast. There is a mildly bitter aftertaste that gently fades away.
This is a very enjoyable, easy drinking IPA. Sweet, mild, yet nicely bitter, I definitely recommend you give this a try.

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA, 6.9%, poured from a bomber into glass
March 2015
L: Golden yellow, thick head, lots of lacing, few bubbles arising
S: Smells Belgian of course, loads of funky spices, strong yeast smell, sweet grapefruit.
T: Grapefruit foremost, citrus rind, and the yeast that was on the load. Bitterness and yeast then leads to sweet malty body and bread. Finishes with that citrus and yeast, with a little lingering banana.
F: Fresh, medium bodied, plenty of carbonation.
O: I liked this. An interesting Stone ale with Belgian yeast making a unique hybrid of sorts.
