Astringent is the word that comes to mind.

Attractive golden color, promising aroma. There is a hint of sweetness on the lips but immediately hits you with the full force of bitter hops. The wisp of Belgian complexity is quickly overwhelmed. Hint of spoiled fruit. Oof, gets less tolerable with each sip.

What's wierd is that I tasted this a couple of times in 2009 and liked it -- I wonder if this bottle is a little bacterial. Came from a store cooler in San Diego.

At home and in the mood to try Stone's Belgian IPA.

Pours a white, creamy head with lots of bubbles and carbonation. The body is a deep reddish gold, very vibrant and clear. Plenty of rising carbonation. Creamy lacing down the side as the head dissipates, which reemerges well upon agitation. These are some great visuals.

Aromas of pine and grapefruit, with slight smells of spices and lager. Definitely has that Belgian-ale aroma. Overall bouquet is not that intense though.

Here is where the problem begins. Flavors of bitter hops, citrus, strong grapefruit, and a little kiwi. The typical spicy Belgian ale flavors are also present. None of these flavors are a bad thing, all are good, but the issue is the bitterness overwhelms the taste. And unlike Stone's original IPA, the hops are not smooth: They impact the palate, but don't refresh it.

This one almost misses the mark completely when compared to other Belgian IPAs such as a Piraat or Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen. I am practically forcing myself to finish it, but do so out of respect for Stone.

On the plus side, the mouthfeel is actually quite decent, but the overwhelming bitterness negates all of the other flavors. Seeing as how it's getting a lot of good reviews, HOWEVER, I may try Cali-Belgique again out of fairness. Perhaps my palate was affected by something else that day.

I had the Cali-Belgique in a tulip glass.

Appearance- This copper body has very attractive pineapple -meat highlights. The impressive foam is two-fingers in width with a white hue that dies slowly to a ring.

Smell- The Belgian qualities are certainly apparent: peppery, musty, and an herbal spiciness that reminds me of coriander. There is only a slight orange and passion fruit citrus quality to this nose. And, unfortunately, a little bit of skunk.

Taste- It starts to turn for the worse here. The skunk was handled on the nose because enough of the Belgian and citrus qualities were evident. Here, however, the skunk really pierces through and also imparts a band-aid, phenol character.

The earthy yeast is not as spicy, and there is only the softest impression of passion fruit. The bitterness certainly is not strong with this beer, but hits the palate just enough.

Mouth feel- It would be nice if this had a slightly bigger body, as it stands, it is a medium to light affair. Maybe a touch under carbonated with how slick it slides over the tongue.

Overall- This Belgian IPA could have stood to have flavors that meshed a little better in the end. The belgian yeast did not compliment the IPA flavors very well. And to top it off, the feel was just a little too light and under carbonated to help.

The off putting phenols and skunk in the nose really sealed this beers fate in the end, however, I do not know how much better this drink would have been with them taken out of the equation.

A - Nice appearance. A beautiful dark amber color. Very clear.

S - Hoppy. A little too hoppy for me. It comes down to personal preference, but I was slightly off put by how strong it was.

T - As with the smell, the hops taste was strong. At first it sucks you in, you're thinking it's not too prevalent, but then it kicks it up. If you're a strong IPA drinker, it's for you.

M - Comes out bitter in the end. Too bitter. Again, it's not my cup of tea.

O - It comes down to personal preference. Not a beer I'd try again, but I can see it's charms with other drinkers.

22 oz bottle. Pours a clear golden orange with a huge creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is earthy muddy peppery hops and yeast with some bubble gum and cotton candy.

The flavor is lots of flowery soapy spices, bubble gum, and peppery hops with a big bitterness in the finish. A little fruitiness comes out as it warms. The mouthfeel is medium to full and is very velvety and creamy.

Overall, it is interesting and unusual. I didn't really care for the soapy bubble gum and bitter blend. It was a little reminiscent of a British nitro ale.
