Cellaring a bit perhaps has made the yeast fall away,so we get an understated IPA, a nice bitterness: lemoney, very drinkable. I could drink this often, just short of astringency. Liked it, though not overally complex or extraordinary IPA. Lasting significant head.

Pours a murky honey orange with a 2 inch foamy off-white head that settles to a thin cap on top of the beer. A latticework of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus zest, herbal hops, and Belgian yeast. Taste is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, and herbal hops up front with the Belgian yeast flavors coming through on the finish. There is a mild amount of citrus zest bitterness on the palate after each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a great flavor and high drinkability.

Amber with golden highlights, lively carbonation and solid one finger head. Smells like belgium yeast and fruity hops. Taste of tangerine, grapefruit, hops and carmel. Bitter finish. Doesn't taste bad but just not what I was hoping from this beer. Its like the beer doesn't know what it wants to be.

ON TAP at STONE. Dark honey color with a nice white head and heavy lacing.

Big lemon citrus assertive nose with hints of yeast, white bread and nose develops to a bit of burnt toast.

Big citrus/grapefruit flavors and a balance and character that belies the alcohol. Pleasant flavors and a very "all around" good drink.

A beer that really goes well with most foods and with a long grapefruit hop finish.

Half finger head with nice lacing on a deep golden hazy body. Aroma is typical Belgian stone yeast with citrus, mostly grapefruit and pear. Flavor is also very citrusy with a tangy and bitter finish. Nice yeast and hop profile. Medium body and moderate carbonation. One of the better offerings from stone for my tastes.

A: The beer is clear golden yellow in color and has a moderate amount of carbonation. It poured with a finger high off white head that quickly died down but left lacing on the surface and a thick ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: There are moderate aromas of citrus and floral hops in the nose along with some hints of spices.
T: There are flavors of citrusy and spicy hops in the taste, which contribute a light to medium amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is also some dryness, which lingers through the finish.
O: The beer has a good balance between the citrus and spicy flavors and is rather easy to drink because the bitterness isn’t overpowering. No traces of alcohol are detectable.

Pours a hazy apricot a pretty nice white head. The initial whiff is of floral hops, followed by some Belgian yeast characteristics. The taste is quite similar, with the addition of a little bit of sweetness. The mouthfeel is fairly heavy, but very nice. A bit of dryness in the aftertaste. Quite drinkable in small quantities, but not something I'd quaff 22's of too regularly.

Appearance: Pours a clear light amber color with a modest but decent cap that rings the chalice with lace

Smell: Boldly herbacious, with a piney, pithy scent; but it does have a urine character about it, too

Taste: Biscuity malt, for a brief moment, with a swift move in both the Belgian and hoppy directions - Belgian in the sense of herbal and bubblegum flavors and hoppy in the piney, pithy sense; after the swallow, the flavors battle one another until reaching a harmonious truce that defines the essence of this beer

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate but prickly carbonation

Drinkability: It took me a while to get there with this beer as the flavors battled away, but once they came together I have to say that I rather enjoyed it

GABF Weekend '08:

One of my favorite emerging styles. The beer has a lot of Chimay Tripel character, but sweeter, with a more caramel, cotton candy-like confection. A bit darker (copper-golden) than most tripels, but this one also gives a light toasty-toffee note that balances the fruity esters and spicy phenols well. The strong hop flavors compliment the peppery, clovey, yeasty spices very well with a sharp citrus, chai-tea herbalness that never wavers from the other complex 'Tripel-like' notes. Evaporative feel to the mouth from the dry hops, minty alcohols, and efforvescent carbonation. The beer just lifts off of the toung and dries out in the finish for superb drinking enjoyment Finishes spicy, citrusy, and with a mild phenolic-soapy note that I pick out in most all hoppy Belgians. Not quite a Houblon Chouffe, but very close in quality.

nice take on a belgian ipa, quite different from say new belgium's belgo. pours light golden and bright, clear through with a one inch white head that hangs out the whole time. smells like belgian yeast, west coast aggressive hops, and light crystal and pale malts in equal proportions. flavor is very well balanced between the fruity lively yeast and the hops, which taste less intense than they smell. some citric hops in here, and some fruit, maybe nelson sauvin? malt profile is very light. feel is okay, but not entirely well suited to this beer. the body is light to medium, which i find a bit thin for the style. carbonation os robust though, and its easy drinking and delicious. overall yet another nice beer from stone.

This brew poured out as a nice lightly hazy yellowish gold color. The head doesn't stick around too long really and the lacing is very minimal. The smell of the beer had lots of Belgian yeast aromas coming off of it and plenty of hops on the nose. The taste of this brew is really nice and soft feeling with some bubbles in there to give it a slight edge. The hops go really well in this brew also. The mouthfeel is pretty light but still had enough going for it to keep it alive. Overall this brew is really nicely done. Big fan of this one.

Bottle: Poured a clear bright golden color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some pretty good lacing. Aroma of slightly bitter hops with a light fruity yeast. Taste is also dominated by some light fruity ester with some dry hoppy notes and some neutral malt in the background. Body is full for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well done thought there is some better example for this style with better balance between yeast and hops.

Sunny tangerine with a few fine floating flecks that don't look like yeast particles. It'll be interesting to see what the final pour adds to the glass (note: nothing much). Atop the beer can be seen three fingers of foam the color of pearls bathed in a soft orange light. The sturdy crown looks more American than Belgian, but then this is an American ale. Cheese grater-like lace sticks to all available surfaces.

The nose is as expected given the ingredients. Magnum, Centennial and Chinook hops add the Cali, while the yeast adds the Belgique. A pretty successful marriage if you ask me. Each sniff delivers orange, grapefruit, lemon and bubblegum. Clove and other spicy yeast esters aren't prominent. A hint of orange-flavored children's chewable aspirin keeps the score from the next highest number.

I like what Stone Brewing hath wrought in this attempt to merge New World hops with Old World yeast. That's a much more inviting combination than Old World hops (just one BA's opinion) and New World yeast (simple ale yeast). This brew may not be quite as delicious as Stone IPA, but it's close. Unfortunately, my flavor memory of their standard IPA is sadly fading since I have no easy access.

The balance between hop flavor and yeast flavor is close to perfect. The impressive tropical fruitiness of the former gradually morphs into the bready and bubblegum-like qualities of the latter. As in the nose, spiciness is kept to a minimum (without being completely AWOL). A blast of clove and cardamom wouldn't have worked as well.

Despite 77 IBUs, the beer doesn't seem overly bitter. Having said that, at roughly the midway point of the bomber, my tongue in beginning to quiver just a bit. Incidently, the alcohol is hidden very well. As the beer warms, kiwi and strawberry notes begin to filter in at the edges. This really is a sneakily complex ale.

The mouthfeel is merely good. It wouldn't be fair to expect something Belgianesque, since the only thing Belgian about this offering is the yeast. Still, it could be more full... or more smoothly creamy... or more softly fluffy. I'm not picky.

If Cali-Belgique IPA is an experiment, then it's a successful experiment. By virtue of one simple change, Greg and the boys at Stone have managed to create an IPA that tastes nothing like the original, yet is just as good. If the suggestion box is open, here's a vote for continued production. Distribution to Iowa is probably a pipe dream, but then that's why I look forward to traveling back to Ohio several times each year.

Found this one on tap at Barleys last night. Figured I would start off the night with it.

The pour was decent with a golden amber color, nice clarity to it and active carbonation leading to a nice white cap that fizzled out quickly and left little in the way of side glass lacing. Aroma was intresting. First aroma is that of light citrus hops, touches of lemon and orange coming through but warming brings out hints of pear, clove and a touch of almost a grainy touch. Really blends very well and creates a nice and very bright aroma. First sip was not as complex as I would have hoped. Light biting on the tongue, nice touches of grapeskin, hints of lemon and light grassy notes. Clean, very clean with little aftertaste other then a slight tartness on the tongue and a light floral note. Smooth, easy to drink and quick to be finished.

Overall while not being the most complex thing in the world, it worked, and worked well. I would have no issue putting another one down.

22oz bomber, a straggler from a trip earlier this year (wait, what, summer is over?!) through Portland, OR and environs.

This beer pours a cloudy, sort of sediment-strewn, pale golden amber hue, with two skinny fingers of foamy, bubbly, and verging on chunky off-white head, which leaves some bicycle chain lace around the circumference of the glass as it quickly seeps away.

It smells of yeasty, dark bready caramel malt, meaty orchard fruit (overripe grapefruit and orange, mostly), funkadelia, and peppery, leafy hops. The taste is more of a bitter, generic citrus hoppiness in the front slot, the bitterness quite easily tempered by a hard to dismiss murky yeastiness, free-associated acrid phenols, a bit of banana chip fruitiness, a bready, grainy, and duly upright malt backbone, and some alcohol-dosed weedy, herbal hops.

The bubbles are there, providing a supportive edge that slowly and surely fades, the body a so-so medium weight (on a diet, or the like), with a nascent creaminess that defies the smoothness killing hop tendencies. It finishes off-dry, the citrus and yeasty funk, complex alike, trying their best to shiv one another.

Much more Belgian (or at least anti-Stone) than even the spunky label could lead one to believe. Cali-Belgique goes a long way to illustrate the effect of yeast on any beer's impression, i.e. there's a Stone IPA under there, but it is ensconced in DNA-rewriting, Euro-lowlands mind shiftiness. Bottom line: still tasty, but the hoppier, bitter beast that you have hitherto known has been co-opted by a surprisingly agreeable, um, (I know) Belgian character. Bigend of Blue Ant, represent!

On tap at the Mellow here in Greensboro.Poured into a standard pint glass a peach infused medium golden with a thinner white head atop,medicinal and citric aromas mainly.Flavors have a slight medicinal quality and deep fruity esters,a citric pine hop component comes into a lingering finish.Not a bad beer but Iam not a fan of the medicinal yeasty quality it has to it.

A: A hazy golden-yellow color with a two finger head. Good lacing.

S: The nose is a bit more complex than your typical IPA. A nice bready, and yeasty aroma with some great citrus hop notes as well.

T: You definitely get the Belgian yeast character in this--orange, some slight spice. The hops are there but not as in-your-face as the typical Stone IPA. Very balanced and tasty beer.

M: Medium body, good carbonation.

D: Not my favorite offering from Stone, but a nice change of pace for them.

A - Poured out a clear, golden-orange color with a small, white, bubbly head of crackling foam. It some soapy trails of lace on the glass.

S - I picked up the fruity and yeasty aroma while I was pouring it. When I put my nose to the glass, I picked up some citrus and caramel, as well.

T - It tasted very yeasty and spicy with great pine notes. The fruity flavors were present but not nearly as strong as the aroma.

M - A crisp and very sharp beer with a dry finish. A light to medium-bodied IPA.

D - This is a very good Belgian IPA. It is very tasty and easy drinking.

22 oz. bomber - $6.49 at Bullock's in Marietta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a light orange-hued body with a large, frothy, white head. Splotchy, sporadic lacing on the way down.

Smell: Delightfully aromatic nose smelling sweetly of bright, fresh tropical fruits and citrus oils with a minor backing of lightly bready malts and spice.

Taste: Sweet, lightly bready maltiness gently yields to a tropical mixture of juicy oranges and grapefruit with a late addition of pine. As the punchy bitterness dies down tastes of artificially-sweetened chewing gum and faint, peppery spice begin to appear. Finishes expectantly dry with lingering aftertastes of bitter, pithy citrus fruit peels.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Lightly oily mouthfeel.

Drinkability: As tasty and supremely drinkable as the original, though I dare say it's just a skosh bit better than the standard Stone IPA.

The Accidental Highway to Hell Tour continues! This stop pours a clear amber-tinted gold topped by a finger of light cream-white micro-foam. The nose comprises dank pine needles, wet grass, lime, light lemon zest, light-ish toffee, and pineapple. The taste holds notes of nutmeg, clove, black pepper, rich toffee, light pretzel, banana, pineapple, light pine resin in the back, and some very light balsa even further in the back. The body is a light medium, with a very light moderate carbonation and a silky smooth feel. Overall, a very nice BIPA, one that goes down way the hell too easily...

A - Deep, golden colored body with good clarity and one and a half fingers of white head. The head settles quickly to a loose layer of big bubbles and leaves a nice, thick ring of lace.

S - A nice, big spicy/ citrus hop aroma up front, backed by clove and tropical fruit aromas from the yeast. Some subtle sweet malt lurks in the background along with anise, clove and a hint of allspice.

T - Moderate, spicy hop flavor and big, mouth coating bitterness in the front. Subtle yeast flavor appears in the middle, light pineapple and clove, but fades quickly. Some bready malt in the finish along with renewed bitterness than dominates and lingers on the palate.

M - Moderate-light body, medium carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - Interesting and drinkable. The aroma is excellent, but the flavor doesn't live up to it. There is a lack of Belgian character in the flavor even though the nose exhibits lots of yeasty goodness. In the end it comes off as mostly IPA and just a little bit Belgian.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a bright orange/amber color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of floral hops, citrus, Belgian yeast and caramelized malts.

T: The taste is very well-balanced with a strong hops bitterness up front that is quickly tempered by a citrus & caramel sweetness and a bready backbone of Belgian yeast. There's also a touch of spice and a hearty malt character. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly hoppy.

M: Smooth and very crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, clean finish.

D: Very tasty, goes down quite easily, not too filling, good kick, excellent representation of style, this is yet another excellent beer from Stone, it is definitely worth drinking for a whole evening.

On tap at Armsby Abbey

A: Pale golden brown color and very hazy and 1 finger head with good retention

N: Nose has some light hops as well as sweet malts and yeasty tones and a touch of nuts, some citrus and spice from the hops

T: Taste starts with some interesting sour sugary notes, lots of raw sugar taste, an interesting fruity center and slight creamy taste, some interesting Belgian yeasty taste mixes with a slight hoppy taste, somewhat like a Belgian IPA and reminds me somewhat of Hopsinjoor, it also has some bright citrus as well as a chalky dusty cinnamon taste in the middle

M: Mouth is juicy with a lot of carbonation and kinda thin

F: Finish has some strong bitter hops and spicey hops with grassy earthy taste that maintains its sweetness as it leaves a huge bitterness on the tongue

Final thoughts: An interesting beer that combines two great beers, as many have done before it, that don't usually blend well. Even with stone doing it, it doesn't blend perfectly but they do a pretty decent job of it. It doesn't have many qualities of either Belgian tripel or Cali style IPA, but slight parts of each rounded pretty well. Its not something to drink every day but occasionally it's an interesting change.

22 oz bottle split into several glasses at a recent tasting. Thanks go to Deuane for this one.

Pours a clear gold, topped with a finger of brite-white colored foam. Quite the robust little layer, that leaves some thick patchy lace back. The aroma is floral and spicy, with some heavier accents of deep bready grains and bright smelling citrus behind it giving off a moderate tang. An undercurrent of yeast adds a bit of extra sharpness to the nose. The flavors are there, but this just lacks a certain sizzle in the nose.

The bitterness is spicy and piney, with that same deep toasted grainy character from the aroma. Delicious tropical fruits and bread mix with yeast in the finish, before ending with a lighly spicy and dry feel. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a mellow creaminess to it that then bubbles up near the back. Despite an obvious heft in the body, the alcohol is very nicely hidden here.

A solid Belgian IPA from Stone. The aroma had me concerned at first, but the taste and great feeling body more than made up for it. I'd love to try this on tap to see if that aroma would pull up any.

Pours a completely clear orange amber with a thin creme head. Nose is perfume and floral tones. Flavor comes off as the skins of some fruit to me. Grapefruits I think. I don't like to eat grapefruit skins, and I don't really want to drink them. There's also a bitter acidic bite from too much hops, I am guessing. Earthy dirt aftertaste a bit. Carbonation is slightly aggressive and the liquid is smooth. Overall this is a below par Belgian IPA IMO. The hops are too prevalent to let the Belgian Ale side shine and it doesn't have the balance I would seek out from this style.
