Review from notes taken on 10/1/10 at the Alewife's Stone total tap takeover. This was my second time sampling this brew (EBF before) but this was the first time I had the opportunity to sit down and really enjoy it and take some notes.

The brandy double bastard appears a hazed amber brown color with a tan head that doesnt hold very well. It receeds fairly fast leaving a spotty amount of lace clinging to the glass.

The aroma is sweet caramelized malt that has a touch of vanilla and a bit of spiciness about it minorly reminescent of cinnamon. Some herbal and citrus hops attempt to shine through the sweetness of the malty sugars. It clearly smells like the product of barrel aging but you could have lied to me and told me it was any form of barrel, not necessarily brandy. As the brew warms, the oakiness really brings out the best in the nose.

The taste is herbal bitterness from the hops with a very bold alcohol presence. For a brew that is 4 years old, it is really holding up well. The alcohol comes through in both taste and warmth down the back of the throat. Some toasty grain quality has a sweetness of caramelized sugar blended with the oaking which imparts a vanilla flavor. As it warms, some more woodsy notes are revealed. A lasting herbal bitterness resides in the mouth with somewhat clingy hops.

For a beer with moderate bitterness and bold alcohol character, I found it to be quite drinkable and enjoyable. The aroma is almost candy-like and it carries over a bit in the taste. This brew is holding up well, I wouldn't mind trying it again.

Had at the Stone Tap Takeover in Charlotte. Served from tap into a tumbler. Poured deep red-orange with a minimal off-white head. There was no lacing evident throughout. The aroma was comprised of slight hop, sweet malt, and a big hit of alcohol. The flavor followed the nose on this one with the same slight hop, sweet malt, and big hit of alcohol. It had a light feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall the alcohol was just too big in this one for me. It definitely hits you hard upon taking your sips. I just wish it was muted a little bit to allow more of the brews character to shine through as with the regular version from this vintage I tried right before it.

Not a bad brew. Never had a brandy barrel aged beer before, so it was an interesting twist. Pours a deep amber color with a one finger off white head that takes a minute or so to dissipate. Leaves some ok lacing. Smell is malt driven, with the barrel aging definitely muting the hops of the original brew. The brandy is noticeable, but not overpowering. Gives the brew a bit of sweetness that is easily identifiable and discernible from the caramel malts.

Taste follows the aroma but the brandy is much more noticeable. Gives the beer a pretty high level of smokiness, which imo slightly diminishes the flavor profile. Still tasty, but the aroma was a bit better than the flavor. The level of smoke also takes down the drinkability for me a bit.

I had this one at the Stone Breweries event at ChurchKey in DC. The beer was served in a 9 oz snifter and had a dark amber colour. The head stuck around the whole time I was drinking it. The smell was lovely and sweet and the hops were noticeable. The taste was similar to the smell and is dominated by sweetness and hops, but the smokiness from the Brandy Barrels is really quite strong. The aftertaste becomes slightly maltier but the smokiness remains.

I had a glass of the regular 2003 Double Bastard Ale and it was better. I found the smokiness from the brandy Barrels didn't improve this beer, but it's still very good.

Appearance: dark brown amber with tan head

Smell: Alcohol and sweet fruit

Taste: Lots of alcohol on this one due to the brandy barrels. Also a good amount of sweet fruit, caramel and oak. Bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Moderate carbonation and a moderate body.

Drinkability: Not quite a session brew. One pint of this one and you'll be feeling the ABV. But it's extremely drinkable. Very smooth and balanced (even though it's a little boozy)

Overall: This is probably one of my favorite beers of all time. Take the Stone Double Arrogant Bastard form years past and throw it in oak brandy barrels and it's a match made in heaven. It's a little hard to describe this one for me. Especially after drinking a pint! It has a sweet malty start and a bitter alcohol bourbon finish. For whatever reason, this is my favorite beer. Bourbon aged strong ales FTW!

Had on tap at Winter Storm, as well as a growler a few months ago. One of Stone's best beers.

The barrel aging really helps to mellow the aggressive and overly sharp hop presence of regular DB. Additionally, the brandy gives it a nice, sweet vanilla presence and a nice bit of alcohol warmth..in the good way. This is one phenomenal beer. Truly a night cap sort of beer, but a much more mature and complex one than regular DB.

Without going into too much of a rant about how DB is a rough, slapshod mix of ingredients, I will say that this variation is surprisingly beautiful. If DB from the bottle tasted like this, I would buy it all the time. Oh, also, 5ish year old regular DB is quite good as well.

I purchased a growler of this beer from the brewery on Friday, August 1st.

A- Poured into a New Belgium globe glass, this beer pours a murky brownish-amber color with a tan head that quickly settles to a thin layer, leaving barely any lacing on the glass.

S- Sweet and sugary aromas of dark fruits like raisins, dates, and plums are supported by a big alcohol presence. As the beer warms, the slightly sweet brandy character really takes over. Some faint notes of caramel and burnt sugar emerge as well.

T- The first taste is of malty sweetness and dark fruits, but the alcohol quickly moves in on the palate before surrendering to a slightly bitter finish. The bitterness really balances out the initial sweetness and the substantial alcohol presence. This beer warms the pipes as it goes down and you can feel the burn long after each sip. Truly awesome.

M- The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with tiny carbonation bubbles.

D- Although the presence of the alcohol in this beer is a major factor, it actually works in its favor. The mild hop bitterness evens things out nicely, and neither the sweetness of the taste nor the high alcohol content ever become cloying. I shared a growler of this beer with a few friends and we were each very sad to see it go.

I can't think of a better candidate for brandy barrel aging than Double Bastard Ale. This beer just worked on every level.

On tap at Dark Lord Day. Glad to see this offering.
Pours dark ruby brown in color with only some effervescent bubbles racing to the top of the glass, but little to no head to be found. Smell is some subtle hops, but mostly huge malts and a perfect amount of brandy. Taste is absolutely incredible. This beer and this barrel are a match made in beer heaven. The hop bitterness has died down some and the brandy barrel has really smoothed things out and is a perfect compliment to the underlying beer. This is still a huge beer. There's still a hint of hop bite in the mouthfeel that really pulls this one all together. A truly outstanding beer.

Finally getting my notes into BA. On tap at DLD 2009.

Poured a darkish brown with some nice red highlights. Nice, thick head. The brandy is definitely the main component of the nose along with miscellaneous fruity esters. There are some hops still kicking. A bit of woodiness and vanilla. Sweet brandy comes through along with some bitterness. Medium body. Very delicious and quite drinkable, although a bit of alcohol taste is present, and it's a bit rich for too much of.

On tap at the Stone Bistro. 8oz glass.

Poured a deep and cloudy amberish-brown color with a very small sized off white head. Aromas of brandy, caramel. some dark fruits, vanilla, roasty, woody, and some chocolate. Tastes of brandy, caramel, dark frutis, some applies, citrus, and lighter wood. Alcohol content fairly well hidden with a light syrupy finish. Sweeter.

I was lucky enough to try this over at Tria in Philadelphia. Not only was it cool to get to sample this rare beer, but I got to talk to the brew master, Mitch Steele, for quite a while about how he got involved with beer.

Like the 07.07.07 Vertical Epic I was able to try, there was no head on this beer. It had a nice amber color and was served in a wine glass. Head really could have helped the look of this beer.

The smell was quite sweet with very subtle flavors. It was hard to distinguish many individual components other than brandy, which derives obviously from the barrels it was aged in for two years.

The flavor was extremely balanced and very nice. There was a noticeable spice, but something I couldn't label. Brandy flavors appeared as well as pumpkin, a tiny bit of hop, and oak. The malt flavor was very distinct as well and overall, this was a very good tasting beer. The mouth feel was excellent which made this a very drinkable beer. Nothing was out of place and the warming flavors that came from swooshing around in my mouth were wonderful.

Very well composed beer, wish they would start making this again!

Draft to 4oz taster

WinterStorm 2012

App- A very murky dark caramel brown with a rich orange undertones of orange and mild yellows. A small 1/2 finger of head. Very cordial like in app.

Smell- Very malty and boozy sweet. The brandy is very upfront and a bit stinging. Smells a lot like a sweeter old guardian.

Taste- Very layered. Very unique treatment of a good base beer. Retains a lot of standard malt flavors but sweetens and thins it out a bit. More than 4-8oz of this I think would just be too much.

Mouth- A good medium body with a well paired low/medium carbonation. A bit pricky residual booze and citrus with some sweetness.

Drink- It was very unique for a six year old beer. It was smooth at points, prickly at others and pretty damn tasty.

On tap at Capone's last night.

The pour is a rather hazy and murky reddish brown with a thin head. Retention is rather non-existent, and given the less-than-ideal serving conditions, I'll go easy on my score here.

The nose is quite excellent, with a complex sweetness, caramel, raisins, brown sugar as well as a touch of sherry-like oxidation. The past few years have been easy on this beer, the hops have gracefully fallen out, leaving just a mild fruity character. Brandy is prominent but well-integrated. Mildly boozy with a great vinous brandy character, I'm really digging the nose. The nose is replicated on the palate for the most part,with the sweetness of the base beer coupled with the mild oxidation opening things off - brown sugar, caramel, sherry - along with a *faint* hop bitterness to make an effort towards balancing things. Brandy vinousness is strong and dominates the mid-palate with some vanilla and some booze. Sweet-yet-drying on the finish, this medium bodied beer with soft carbonation is excellent on the palate, and I was a little sad when it was all gone. I'd love to try this again.

The beer pours a deep red color with a thick frothy off-white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It's your typical Double Bastard scent; warm and hoppy with a nice malt bill that provide a complex drinking experience. The brandy barrel aging adds nice bit of depth to the aroma. It does seem to mute the hops some. The taste is excellent ! What a smooth beer. The brandy really seems to mellow the overall taste. It's less hoppy and more malt-centric with a mild barrel character. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a very good beer. The original is good, but this one provides an interesting new look.

Draft at Tria in Philly: this was a special treat for me as I used to be a big fan of Arrogant Bastard but was not impressed with the regular Double Bastard. This aged brandy barrel version was excellent. Nice aroma, hop flavor with the brandy/wood to bring some balance to this, fairly full mouthfeel...an excellent brew. Mitch Steele from Stone was at this event and told me the brandy barrels for this were purchased for about $20 and lasted for only one batch. After they were used they fell apart, never to be used again.

Looked like regular double bastard with a smaller lightly carbonated head.

Aromas are very nice showing thick piney hop and toffee malts with a caramel underlying that leads into a woodsy thick brandy grape aromas. Some brown sugary aromas arise very nice.

Hops have tamed somewhat but are still piney and earthy with hints of citrus. Dried figs, raisin, oak and brandy grapes with a brandy sweetness. A bit of milk chocolate on the very end. Mouth was slightly thin compared to the original. Otherwise a winner.

Pours dark copper with a small head. The aroma is primarily brandy with bready malt and lots of alcohol. There's also a slight smell of blackcurrant and plum. The first sip is very sweet with a slight bitterness that does well in balancing out the sweetness. The brandy character is strong and a truly delicious addition to the Double Bastard. The alcohol flavor is a little overpowering and at times a distraction from this work of art. The beer is well carbonated, creamy, and coats the mouth with each sip. I wish this was bottled.

Double Brandy Bastard looks great with a ruby red glaze and some burnt orange highlights. The snifter came to me with a thin dying cap that bounced quickly. It's a barrel aged beer what do you expect. Some rising bubbles with a nice sheet of burnt white lace surprisingly. This beer is a looker.

The smell is a big blast of brandy from the bottle, not sure what type as Im not a str8 brandy drinker, but I love it in my beer. Some minimal butterscotch and some fruity cherry. Some malt sweetness as well with caramel. The huge stone hop bill has faded in three years time, so this bastard is sweet and boozy in smell.

As expected the malts are really large and make for a a underlining butterscotch and caramel mix in taste, but the brandy beats this out being the main taste. The brandy gives off just a bit of heat and alcohol. Some cherry and other sweet fruits. Getting some apple on the tail end. On some sips this reminded me of mad elf without the brandy for some strange reason. Hops are not an issue at this stage in it's life.

This one is smooth and slightly boozy from the barrel. Just a bit of heat is detected. A big sweetness comes with it and no bitterness from the faded hops. A bold medium bodied beer with low carb. A slow sipper for sure with all the booze so this is a one snifter type of beer for me, Im glad I tried it. Sip, Savor, Repeat.

'06 edition aged in brandy barrels. Had at the Stone World Bistro. Dark brown/red in color with a small off white head and a little lacing.

Smells strongly of dark fruits, red wine, brandy, French oak, and alcohol. I'm trying to detect hops in there, but can't.

Pretty massive in taste. Lots of brandy and red wine flavors with some raisins and plums. Heavy mouthfeel with a balancing carbonation. Big malt taste hits at the end and lingers in the aftertaste.

This is a complex and flavorful beer. A little low in the drinkability department. I still need to try the regular '06 DB and see how they compare.

Had on tap at the Stone Total Tap Takeover in Baltimore

A-pours a clear copper color with a thin dark tan colored head

S-light notes of oak, big time caramel and brown sugar, wet cardboard and obvious oxidtion with hints of sweet brandi in the back.

T-lots of oxidation, light notes of oak, so much sugar in this with burnt caramel and brown sugar, wet paper, the brandi comes in at the back with a fair bit of boozy heat.

M-full bodied and very thick and grainy, rough to drink with strong carbonation and a messy finish.

D-this has been oxidized and has a ton of sugar in it. very messy malt bomb.

On tap at Stone Bistro for RBSG 08. Pours a burgandy color with no head or lace. Aromas of light caramel and tropical fruit. Flavor is of caramel and burnt sugar, astringent brandy, some sweet fruit, and a lingering roasty finish. Great complexity. Nice warming quality to this beer, clean on the palate, not overly boozy.

Pours a dark ruby brown color with a short off white head.

Scent of strong hops, strong malts, tobacco, and fruit. Not getting a whole lot out of it after the barrel aging.

Taste is the same, strong hops, malts, tobacco, sweet fruit, and a hint of brandy. I don't think the aging really helped this one. I can't say the same for the bourbon barrel aged version, but regular Double Bastard is better than this.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth with strong carbonation.

My friend went down to stone and purchased this beer with my growler...thanks buddy. Anyways, I was real impressed with this beer. One of the best I've ever had...seriously. The appearance was a deep amber color and you could definitely smell and taste that it was aged in Brandy Barrels. The mouthfeel was exceptional...with just the right about of viscosity and carbonation. It also left the back of my tongue and mouth a bit warm....awesome. Overall, a great beer!!!

A - Copper-brown hue; light tan head

S - Touch of booze; sweet cherry like aroma; malty; vanilla

T - Smooth comes to mind; touch of hoppiness but sweeter brandy-like flavors come through the most; a little tart and vanilla shows up as well. Lots of layers to this brew

M - Viscous; smooth; coating

D - Way too good for the abv! Dangerous here, lots of great tastes, and equally interesting.

Overall, too bad this is a retired brew. Really fantastic, and if it ever shows up, definitely grab a pint!

Pours a deep dark mahogany/chestnut brown color with very dark ruby edges and a one finger off-white head that quickly fades into a thin ring. Not much lacing.

Sweet vinous aroma with lots of alcohol and oaky vanilla brandy notes. Dark fruit, caramel, fig, currant, red cherries, grape and toasty malt.

Sweet vinous medium body with lots of oaky vanilla brandy flavor. Slight vanilla smoothness balances out the sweet alcohol and prominent brandy. Lots of dark fruit notes, especially grape, dark cherries and currant. Slight heat but mostly from the brandy aging and a bit of roasted chocolate malt underneath but most of the the flavor is overpowered by a prominent brandy flavor.
