On tap at Newhall Refinery in Newhall, CA.

Pours a hazy orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, citrus zest, bourbon, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest, brown sugar, vanilla, bourbon, and wood flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop and wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a bourbon barrel presence that seems fairly subdued compared to the hop profile in the base beer.

On-tap at Stone

A: The pour is a dark amber color with very minimal head. Maybe a thin and short-lived layer of khaki foam.

S: Smells like -bals. Lots of vanilla and maple syrup with very little of the Arrogant Bastard character left. Sweet and caramel forward with a bit of booze. Definitely some oak and perhaps a little bit of chocolate.

T: Toffee and vanilla dominate the flavor on the front end. The bourbon starts to creep in and there's a pleasant oakiness. More chocolate than I got on the nose and even more vanilla.

M: The body is medium and the carbonation is too, although you wouldn't guess it from looking at the beer.

D: This was good. I wish Stone would put out more of their SPIRIT barrel aged beers.

Pours a dark brown with a nice creme head on it. Nose is uneventful. Flavor is kind of a quick hit of bourbon and then that muted cotton thing that I get a lot of out of some of these styles of beer. Wonder what that is and why precisely. Feel is smooth enough on liquid and the carbonation is a bit nipping actually. Overall this is okay at best. Perhaps the age has sent it over the hill or it has sat on tap too long? Either way, decent enough to try, but not worth running out for.

A: Poured a deep rust color, appeared more orange in the growler though. Good carbonation and a dirty white head.

S: Like a regular Arrogant B. Very little if ant barrel influence

T: What happened here? This tasted like a regular Arrogant B. Minimal bourbon, no wood, no traditional barrel notes. Still has booze and hop bite

M: Bittering hops, booze, sticky and creamy on very end

D: Average for BA strong ale

On tap at Stone Winter Storm 2011

A: Reddish orange with a small fizzy white head.

S: Bourbon goes very well with Arrogant Bastard. Touch of vanilla, evident oak. Caramel and a nice toffee profile with subtle oxidation. Toffee and bourbon combination is great. A little pine.

T: Bourbon toffee with light vanilla and a good deal of oak. Dried dark fruits. Moderately bitter with a touch of grapefruit and pine.

M: Medium body with moderate carbonation. Mouthfuls is dry and sticky.

Overall: A nice twist on Arrogant Bastard. Enjoyable. The aroma was great.

Had while at Brewvival! Served from tap into a sampler Brewvival imperial pint. Poured dark brown with a half finger tan head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, bitter hop, caramel, wood, and sweet alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, bitter hop, caramel, and wood. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. A very nice spin on the regular Arrogant Bastard for sure. It also seemed to mellow out the original as well making this quite enjoyable. Really glad I got the chance to try this one as it wasn't at the Stone Tap Takeover event in Charlotte and I wished it would have been.

A deep hue of burgundy with a thin tan head.

Some earthy hops with oak and some bourbon.

Bourbony and lightly sour with earthy dry hops and some booze. The malt keeps things in check a bit. Really unique taste. Can't say I've had a bourbon barrel aged beer anything like this before.

Smooth and dry. Carbonation is just fine.

A very unique brew that I enjoyed trying. Like I said before, there just isn't anything to compare to this. If you see it, try it out.

On-tap at Brewvival 2011.

Pours a ruddy dark brown with a thin creamy tan head. Nice crisp aromas of caramel malt, bitter, earthy hops, vanilla, bourbon, oak, and ash. Flavor is very similar, not as hoppy as expected, I assume the barrel mellows them quite a bit. Bourbon presence is very nice, not too overpowering like some hoppy beers. Pretty crisp, with a medium body and moderate carbonation. A really nice take on Arrogant Bastard.

A dark brown body with a very small off-white head that leaves some nice lacing behind.

Bourbon. This smells like straight bourbon.

There is just a ton of bourbon flavor in here; after my first sip I had to check to make sure that I was drinking beer and not straight bourbon. Not a lot of other characteristics of the beer come through here, the bourbon is overpowering. If you like bourbon, this is a good one.

Medium mouthfeel, burning.

Pretty good drinkability, really strong though.

Poured in an oversized wine glass.

A - Pours a dark brown with some hints of dark dark honey. Had a very thin head that left no lacing on the glass.

S - Alcohol is the first thing I smell, followed by some prune character which I can identify as the bourbon aspect of it. Also some hops there at the end but not too much.

T - Quickly the bourbon is felt and a prune taste that comes with it. Some sweeter malts felt throughout the middle as well and then at the end some roasted feel to it as well a mild hop induced bitterness and feel.

M - Medium bodied a bit oily on the tongue with med-low carbonation. Still well balanced. A little sweet for my liking.

D - I could only really have one. Mostly because of the sweetness.

On tap at Sunset in Allston as part of the Stone celebration for the Craft Brewers Conference. Served in a 13 oz tulip glass. Dark brown color. Not much head, little carbonation. Huge smell of bourbon, right up front. No need to lift the glass, I could smell it from the glass sitting on the bar. All I got from this beer was bourbon, and I liked it. At first it was a bit too strong, but I warmed up to its strength. You could tell this beer was high in abv, but that was to be expected. An extreme beer for sure, and not recommended for those not looking for a high octane brew.

pour was an amber and ruby with a thick creamy head.

mostly bourbon on the nose. very light hops however they were dominated by a heavy bourbon presence. lots of vanilla.

again, heavy on the bourbon. this was very dominating with a nice thick vanilla flavor that blended well with the sweet malt and citrus hops.

very full, a bit resin like. nice moderate carbonation. slight dryness.

this was good, although i can see this becoming cumbersome after a bit with the strong bourbon.

Draught at Rattle 'N' Hum Stone event, 8-9 oz. pour.

Pours a deep, hazy copper, thin, soapy off-white head.

Nose is quite a bit of vanilla and bourbon comes out strong and in front, bit fruity, some brown sugar underneath.

Taste is dry up front, the base beer doesn't come forth readily at all, bit prickly, with vanilla and bourbon coming on loud and clear as the taste progresses, some spicy brown sugar as well. Overly dry, the bitterness from the base beer seems to remain much more than any actual flavor, with a moderate lingering bitterness on the finish, and an exhale of toasty caramel and bourbon. .

Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, medium-full body that gets just a bit watery at times.

Plenty drinkable if you love bourbon. This was by far my least favorite of the barrel-aged Stone beers. Brandy Double '06 is a masterpiece, Wine Old Guardian '08 is a great beer even without a lot of oak character, but this one almost loses the base beer entirely.

On tap at the Stone Tap Takeover at Acre. Served in a snifter.

Appearance: My snifter is full of a recognizable cherry mahogany beer with a nice beige cap. Webs of lace stick to the lace and the head retains well, like the normal Bastard.

Smell: The aroma is full of caramel malt, with grapefruit and other assorted citrus smelling hops, pine needles, and just a touch of oak and bourbon.

Taste: The taste starts out sweet. Caramelized grapefruit impart a sweet and hoppy flavor right away. A bit of brown sugar, prickly pine, some oak, and bourbon toward the end lead into a bitter finish. The pine hops and bourbon combine to give off a fusel bitter flavor that is not very good and lingers through the finish.

Mouthfeel: The body is slightly above medium, with mostly creamy smooth carbonation. A little bit sticky up front and after each sip, with an alcohol inspired dryness in the middle.

Overall: This is the second Stone beer I like a little bit less after aging it in bourbon barrels. The residual pine hop presence doesn't work well with the bourbon for me.

4oz. pour from tap during Stone's Winter Storm. The following review is based on notes taken Thursday, February 10, 2011.

Served in a fluted tulip.

Appearance: Murky auburn body with a fine, sticky, khaki-colored crown. Good head retention and lots of lacing - surprising for a barrel-aged ale.

Smell: Bourbon. Lots of caramel-like aromas, booze, and fruity esters, accented by hints of pine, and a whisper of Arrogant Bastard (ale yeast). One-dimensional and a bit harsh, though still decent.

Taste: Flavor profile rocks back and forth between bourbon barrel ale and Arrogant Bastard. The hops are essentially absent, and the bourbon component is mellow and mingles nicely with the base beer. Malt-forward and pleasantly sweet. Caramel, vanilla, oak, and bourbon all combine in a very enjoyable finish. Mellow and easy-going - I like it.

Mouthfeel: Malty, medium-bodied, and slightly drier than the original version. Good mouth-coating. A bit prickly, but not harsh at all.

Drinkability: Very mellow for a bourbon barrel-aged beer, and an excellent spin-off of the original Arrogant Bastard. I could easily order more of this.
