22 fl. oz. bottle at refrigerator temperature poured into a snifter. Bottled in June 2009.
A - Dark copper body with a creamy, off-white head. Good head retention.
S - Lots of spicy, sweet, caramelized malt character on the nose. Basically a robust version of the sweet smell of malted barley that we all know from when we've visited a brewery or homebrewed. Bold hop character lends nice background notes of orange, pine, and tropical fruit.
T - Stone has a knack for making very well-balanced big beers. I get a ton of malt, a ton of hops, but they work very well together in concert. I get caramel and roasted nuts from the malt, and sweet citrus and pine from the hops. The high-ish alcohol content is very well-hidden behind the malt and hops.
M - Nice job of maintaining an interesting finish without the stickiness that often accompanies big beers. Spot-on carbonation. Very impressive mouthfeel for the style.
D - This is a great big beer, either for quaffing/sipping or for recreational drinking. I'd drink this with a big hunk of Cabot Clothbound Cheddar and a soft baguette, or with a grilled cheese. Cheese, bread, and big beer is where it's at. Get your hands on this brew before it's gone.
