Picked up two 12oz bottles over the summer and let age for a few months and I might be drinking the next one pretty soon. Got them at Julio's in Westborough and would have picked up more if they weren't $9.99 a bottle.

Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass. Pours black with mahogany and reddish highlights when held up to the light. It's not completely opaque with some highlights looks to be pretty well filtered with some clarity, but it's pretty dark so tough to tell. There was a tannish colored head that sticks around for several minutes and produces a better than average lacing and glass retention. The smell is great, initially hoppy, but also a bit of sweetness from roasted grain and malts. It smells of both citrus and pine hops to me, nice combination of the both, maybe a bit more citrus, but pretty close, very nice. The taste is similar. Has an initial sweetness from the malts then the hops just completely take over from there on out. Again multiple hops are noticeable, very nice. There is a bitterness and a bit of an earthy taste, but it's still a very tasty brew overall. The mouthfeel is more than medium but I wouldn't completely say full bodied. Dry bitter finish that is closer to an IPA. With the huge full flavor of this brew I still find it very drinkable, which I find classic pilsner. This is a very good brew I wish it was still in production. I don't know when I'll be drinking my second one.

Waited to have the other bottle on a nice warm night 9/7/2010 and thought I should add a few more notes. I liked it much more than I remember. One thing I neglected to mention was the pour itself. It almost seemed to have that nitro effect that Guinness tends to have, looked nice. I don't think I gave the lacing enough credit either, it was pretty good. The smell is really still really good, has a lot going on. I gotta say, I absolutely love the flavor. It's big and bold, it has so much to offer. If there was just one beer left on the planet I don't think I'd want it to taste like this. It has so much to offer, it's just big on everything, it doesn't skimp on anything. Very malty and hoppy with the perfect amount of bitterness. The mouthfeel is great, ery full bodied, bigger than most pilsners. It has a thickness to it that most of this style don't, but not too thick and remains smooth and even a little refreshing, unbelievably great bitter finish. It burps up nice, some slight smokeyness from the malts and bitterness from the hops. The alcohol is disguised very well too. I woudn't even know it was 10% if I didn't already know. I could personally drink it year round, warms you up in the winter and refreshing in the summer. Nothing not to love about this beer.

I'm dissapointed that this beer is retired. I would absolutely love to see this in stores year round, it has so many perfect qualities to it. I would love to see something work out and have this beer come out on a regular basis. I love it, thank you to Stone, BrewDog and Cambridge!

09/26/13 From bottle. At 10% this has an exaggerated burn in the taste. Unfortunately it is at the expense of anything nuanced in the brew. Sure there are roasted malts in the aroma, but when the rubber meets the road...all I'm getting is "The Burn". Could be a bottle beyond use by since it was a one-off in 2009, but at 10% I wouldn't think that should not be an issue.

Review from 12/2009 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark near black amber. Moderate head and light lacing. Hoppy aroma. Hops / IPA start with a light malt, black ale backbone. Hops, malt, fruit, alcohol middle and hoppy finish. Like a dark hoppy American barley wine. Not that well integrated. Interesting but not exceptional. Addendum: tried again in 2010, it did not improve with age. Still drinkable, but no mellowing or integration; hops astringent.

A - Pours a dark brown-black color with a finger of frothy khaki colored head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of roasted chocolate and dark malts with some earthy and citrus hops, some licorice, and a bit of coffee, dark fruits, and booze.

T - Starts off with some roasted chocolate malts with some orange and citrus hops with a bit of black licorice and coffee. Through the middle, some earthy hops and bitterness comes through with some dark fruit sweetness, nuttiness, and some dark caramel malts. The finish is a mix of roasted chocolate and coffee with some dark fruit and a bit of booze.

M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth and slightly thick with a sweet and warming finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice mix of dark roasted malt character and lager smoothness. Good overall balance and body.

More thanks to Bobby (alembician) for a beer I might never had a chance to try at all.

This beer is close to black, a very dark brown with ruby-brown hues in the light. A light brown head shows some a little growth and some stick, as it retains itself well and manages pretty good lacing.
This is a unique beer that I wouldn't think could be pegged as any kind of pils going into it. There is some grassiness to otherwise citric, grapefruity and herbal hops along with a lot of roast and some char. I suppose I could see this tagged as a Black Pilsener in the same way there's such a thing as a Cascadian Black, in that the hoppiness stops short of that particular style, it has the same kind of mixture and balance of hops and malts, and it's a bit earthier and grassier. The malty sweetness just adds an extra element. Alcohol is exceptionally well masked.
The body is medium, not the typical lightness of a pils but with the crispness, with a prickly carbonation. It foregoes smoothness for the crispness.

This is one of a number of collaborative beers I've recently had. All of them feature Stone as well as two other brewers. I think this is one of my favorites. Very drinkable, especially for the alcohol by volume.

Appearance is a dark black. Very dark carbonation, which was quite active and left some lacing behind.

Smell was of dark roast and dark fruits. Some hops comes through. In general, a very strong aroma.

Flavor was excellent. Very well balanced. All the elements were there and it was very drinkable given the abv.

Overall an excellent beer.
