Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

This is quite a complex and layered beer. Bold and smooth chocolate malt flavors combine with a Belgian yeast lending tropical fruit/banana flavors and hints of spiciness, all complemented by citrus notes from an addition of tangerine peel. Rich vanilla beans add a nice counter to the chocolate malt - actually enhancing the chocolatiness. The finish is smooth, with additional traces of vanilla and toasted characters from French Oak. The goal for this edition of the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series is to be reminiscent of artisanal chocolates accentuated with orange.

Pours a dark chestnut brown, nearly opaque in the glass and topped by a small coffee-colored head that holds up nicely.

Aromatically it's nice but a bit muted, with fig and berry-like esters being most prominent, along with traces of chocolate and vanilla. As it warms the orange peel and vanilla take the forefront.

The taste is a pleasant and well-balanced mix of fruity esters, roast, vanilla, chocolate, citrus and resiny hops. Sweetness is restrained up-front and the mid-palate and finish are surprisingly bitter, both from roasted malt and hops. Finishes dry with a lasting coffee-like bitterness, vanilla popping up again in the far aftertaste. Very solid stuff, my favorite vertical epic so far.

A- Poured into an Allagash stemmed glass, this beer pours a dark, dark brown that's almost black. Some molasses hues line the bottom of my glass as I hold it up to light. A frothy brownish-tan head subsides to a thin cap over the beer. A few streaks of lacing are left behind.

S- Bold notes of rich chocolate and roasted grain are accented by fruity notes of citrus fruit and banana. The Belgian yeast adds a nice spiciness to the aroma.

T- The taste possesses loads of chocolate and deep-roasted malt flavors with Belgian yeast adding its unmistakable imprint. A definite citrus note lingers in the background towards a finish that presents a nice roasted coffee bitterness coupled with estery flavors of banana and more of that spicy Belgian yeast. Complex stuff.

M- Full in body with nicely active carbonation and a velvety-smooth texture.

D- The flavor is so rich that it prevents me from wanting more than one glass. The 8.6% ABV is very well-hidden.

An interesting and unique beer with huge flavors and aromas that all work together really well.

Aromas of sweet cocoa with some lesser coffee and dark fruit characteristics. Slight hints of vanilla and herbal smells.

Rich malt, dark fruit, sweet cocoa nibs, and vanilla, all highlight the palate, but also some nice earthy hop presence, similar to the aroma. Subtle Belgian yeast qualities that only add to the complexity.

The mouthfeel is really smooth and slightly creamy, but too thin for such a big beer. The Belgian yeast should add some more to the mouthfeel but somehow does not.

Overall, this beer is a really solid offering especially for the higher ABV and extreme roastiness. Wish there was some Belgian influence, also wish I tried this fresh as well to have a comparison. Regardless it's delicious.

Pours a murky dark coffee-like brown color with very thin tan head.

The scent is of sweet chocolate and roasted malts.

The taste is very sweet initially, but very quickly turns to a dark chocolate, bitter coffee taste. Roasted malts and a dry bitter hop finish.

Medium bodied, dry feel with not a lot of carbonation.

This is a pretty decent beer, it is fairly complex and interesting.
