Bottle pour at Woodshop 8 held at The Hermosillo in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and coffee aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly sour cocoa and coffee flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer that is showing its age and this particular bottle is turning slightly sour.

12oz Bottle

A great big thanks goes out to errantnight for sending this along in a Christmas box, thanks again brotha! A pitch black pour fills the pint glass while chestnut brown highlights grace the body along the bottom and sides of the glass. The head easily grows to two fingers of creamy beige on a light pour and slowly fades to a rigid cap. Peaks and valleys of lacing cling to the glass in sheets as the head settles and after each drink.

The nose isn't quite as expressive as I imagined it would be but I suppose the coffee has something to do with that. The Kona coffee hits first in a fairly straightforward manner. Bittersweet baker's chocolate comes through in the middle and a rather rich caramel brings up the rear with the raw coffee beans. The coffee obviously dominates the aroma and a mild nuttiness comes through although it's rather generic and I would never have guessed macadamia.

The coffee beans are upfront but a little on the subtle and generic side. The middle is weak with muddled coffee, baker's chocolate, light cream (which may be the coconut sweetness), a mild roast, and nuttiness on the finish. The beginning is solid but the middle through end is a little muddled and hard to dissect. The best part of the flavor is the lingering aftertaste where big notes of dark chocolate combine with the mildly bitter coffee grounds and a lingering, soft nuttiness. This beer gets much better as it nears room temperature. The flavors front to back seem to smooth out and meld much better.

The body is on the medium side, which is to be expected from a coffee porter but the carbonation is a little higher than I would like, causing some prickliness along the tongue. The carbonation eventually softens which makes for a smooth, somewhat slick body. As this one sits in the glass and the carbonation mellows it really comes into its own.

The drinkability is good for an 8.5% porter. There's no discernible alcohol and the flavors end up coming together nicely after some warming. The flavors are interesting enough to keep me coming back again and again.

I have had my eye on this brew for awhile now and am happy I got to give it a go around. it's not quite as expressive as I thought it was going to be but it’s a damn fine porter none the less. Thanks again for the great box, Derek!
