A - Deep ruby red and a touch hazy with a nice 1/2" foamy head that didn't hang out with us veyr long

S - Nice pine shaped aromas hit first with a malty finish. Maybe hints of plum as well.

T - Sweet, and a tad boozy. Pine and a little few hints of grapefruit hop characteristics swirl around as well.

M - Low carbonation and smooth. A little on the thick/syrupy side, but otherwise very pleasant on the tongue.

I enjoyed this quite a bit and look forward to a few more. A few to drink now, and maybe age a couple.

A - Served with an orange-amber body...a very thin head to begin and spotty retention...not much lacing

S - The nose was nice...sweet aromas with a syrupy texture to it...the hops, as in most Stone beers, were very pronounced and had citrus and pine aromas going on

T - This barleywine was very well balanced...the sweetness dominated in the beginning with lots of caramel malts...the hops show up at the end for a long, bitter finish...but the two of them join in the middle and play off of each other nicely...alcohol provides a warming finish when swallowed

M - Medium bodied...syrupy, smooth, nice push from the nitro

D - This was a decent barleywine...the alcohol was very evident which hinders a little but I think the balance of the flavors make up for it

Poured from bomber into goblet. Limited early 2010 release.

A: Rich glowing somewhat hazy deep amber coloring with nice head for barleywine. Heavy lacing apparent as well. Good looking brew.

S: Nice Stone nose dominated by citrus hop notes but a backing of toffee tinged malt. Nice nose.

T & M: From what I recall the 2010 release strikes me as being more balanced than the 2009 release. Up front malt and toffee notes readily apparent with nice Stone hop notes on the finish.

D: For a barleywine quite drinkable, Bigfoot is still my favorite Old Guardian is a darn fine example of the style.

22oz bomber poured into a goblet.

A: Copper-colored body. Giant white head. Not much lacing, though.

S: Lots of caramel with a fair amount of citrus.

T: Caramel and chocolate. Citrus and bitterness from the hops. Alcohol is noticeable but not overwhelming.

M: Medium to heavy. Not a lot of carbonation.

D: A solid barleywine, but not one that particularly wowed me. Unlike last year's offering, I feel like some aging would significantly improve it.

consumed on 04-18-2010, 22oz bomber into snifter

Poured into snifter....copper/dark caramel color with a fluffy off white head that stuck around for a while.. settled in at a thin nice looking film..

when i first cracked it open it smelled of sweet dark cherrys. I got this again once it was poured into glass. very sweet boozy smell..piney/hoppy with a malt backbone.. a little caramel, grapefruit..wood, really a lot going on in the nose..

First sip was whoa!..as it enters my mouth I get sweetness right away. I keep sipping because I cant really get any other flavors except for the aftertaste. i let it warm up a bit.. minutes later I retaste and get sharp grapefruit, orange peel, very strong hop presence but yet still get that dark cherry sweetness, almost medicinal...aftertaste is a burn, hoppy tone with wood (cedar? oak?)

mouthfeel is thick and very warm...def a slow sipper..

Poured into my trusty tulip glass. Aa dark brown with lots of cranberry like redness throughout. About a 1/2 inch worth of creamy tan head.
Smell is big on everything. Huge malts,huge hops. Lots of citrus, pine,caramel, darks figs and prunes.

On the mouth you're first hit with the citrusy hops and then the spice kicks in followed but a ton of sweet caramel and dark sticky fruits.Alcohol is definitely in forefront on this badboy. It's hard to mask the heat from 11.10% abv. I would imagine a few years in the cellar would mellow this out but then the hoppy goodness i love about it would also be faded.

Mouthfeel is full bodied for sure. Thick, creamy,smooth and pretty well balanced as far as bitterness and sweetness goes.

Overall a tasty Barleywine. I had no trouble finishing the bomber but i did feel the effects. Could probably stand a little aging. This is a pretty young bottle.
