Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

This ninth edition of our Stone Vertical Epic Ale series takes two interesting left turns. A Belgian-style golden triple is the starting point of this beer, but the first left turn is nearly immediate with the addition of dried chamomile flowers, triticale, and Belgian amber candi sugar. The second, and rather unusual left turn takes us half an hour up the road from Stone to Temecula courtesy of the addition of just-pressed Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from our friends at South Coast Winery. As the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series has moved through the calendar, we found that the brewing schedule for a 10.10.10 release coincided nicely with the grape harvest, neatly providing an interesting twist in this epic ale.

Bottle into The Bruery tulip, refrigerated since release.

Pours a hazy honey gold, with a thin fluffy white head that settles into a thin soapy cap quickly enough. Nice delicate lacing as the head recedes.

Nose is heavy on the white grape juice, lightly floral. White pepper in there also, and an interesting spice presence reminding me of nutmeg. Bit of vanilla. Light alcohol for the size, sweet fruitiness without much of a vinous white grape presence; comes across as more straight fruit juice. I liked it.

Taste is quite nice. Maltier than expected, and not as tart. Bready malt, big, somewhat vinous white grape presence, and the floral chamomile really comes out towards the finish - the exhale especially it has a clear presence over a very light bitterness. Light white pepper, with a spicy alcohol note that's a bit drying. Only lightly tart, the peppery character kind of takes that space in the flavor profile instead. More vinous than the nose. I rather liked this beer. Quite tasty.

Mouthfeel is very nice; medium in body, a bit on the dry side, with a softish carbonation. Small bubbles, massaging rather than scrubbing, really well executed. Very little heat from the alcohol.

Drinkability is very good also. Alcohol is largely and surprisingly missing. The yeast strain proves to be a good choice, and despite the crazy array of ingredients, everything tends to work in harmony instead of clashing. Complex and simply enjoyable at the same time. This seems to be a love it or hate it beer - put me firmly in the former camp. Nice job.

Bought at Keg Liquors in Clarksville, IN.
Drank from snifter glass.

A - Cloudy. Golden amber color. Minimal carbonation with a quickly (under 5 seconds) dissipating head. Lacing is almost non-existent.
S - Immediate banana aroma. Slight cloves. Fresh chlorine and yeasty smelling.
T - Banana, green apple, yeasty/esters. Slightly spicy swallow.
M - Medium to heavy body. Sticky on tongue after swallow. Perfect amount of carbonation.
O - At first sip, it tastes and smells like a regular Belgian Tripel, but it develops subtleties when aerated (specifically Gewürztraminer/green apple).

Poured into a Stone snifter

A- pours a clear golden orange color with a small fizzy white head that disappears quickly, looks similar to a hard cider

S- vinous aromas of white wine grapes, banana and clove from the base triple, flower peddle, apple cider, candied sugar

T- classic triple flavors up front of banana and clove, the addition of the grapes adds a slight tartness with hints of ripe apple and pear, flowery hibiscus gives a floral sweetness with hints of candied sugar on the finish

M- medium body and carbonation leads to a spritzy mouthfeel and a crisp finish

O- the addition of grapes adds a nice variation to a traditional triple, good but likes '11 and '12 better so far

a - poured a 1/2 finger thick fizzy, eggshell-colored head into a tulip glass that was gone quickly. the body was crystal clear, bubbly, and amber.
s - very juicy smelling with some floral aromas as well.
t - juicy and sweet grapes dominant. very wine-like.
m - slick and thin.
o - i've had several gewurztraminers and this was very reminiscent. not my favorite VE but solid.

The smell comes off as a sour, and this has been nearly aged for 4 years. Some sour flavors come through, but a big white wine taste, the belgian yeast comes through. But big grape, and slight bitterness.

Great carbonation after all this time. This is very complex and powerful. Great..
