Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

This ninth edition of our Stone Vertical Epic Ale series takes two interesting left turns. A Belgian-style golden triple is the starting point of this beer, but the first left turn is nearly immediate with the addition of dried chamomile flowers, triticale, and Belgian amber candi sugar. The second, and rather unusual left turn takes us half an hour up the road from Stone to Temecula courtesy of the addition of just-pressed Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from our friends at South Coast Winery. As the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series has moved through the calendar, we found that the brewing schedule for a 10.10.10 release coincided nicely with the grape harvest, neatly providing an interesting twist in this epic ale.

Poured from a bomber into a tulip glass.

A: Slightly hazy, brassy golden color with no foam head. No lacing remains on the glass.

S: Syrupy Belgian crystal malt is minimally yeast-affected; more comparable to honey. Adjuncts tend to disappear into the overall heavy-sweet sensory profile; one could make a case for the contribution of the grapes, but the herbs are particularly absent. That said, it is not overtly vinous in any way. No alcohol is detected.

T: Begins very off-dry, with refined Belgian aromatic malt and wheat-affected yeast esters that yield some similarities to imperial weizen. Additional bright stone fruit—very much like those inherent to the tripel style—is also present in the first half of the profile. Flavors become soft, earthy, and only marginally bitter into the slightly medicinal finish. No alcohol is detected.

M: Medium viscosity, syrupy and slightly acidic on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: This beer exhibits a seamlessness that has developed over time since its release. The result is an initial crispness indicative of a tripel, followed by a spreading mustiness that is impossible to attribute only to the grape or herbal adjuncts. It is complex, though rather muddied—but at three years of age it leaves less of a question mark in the mind of the drinker than it did in 2010.

Really nice Belgian triple.
Over three years old and still clear, not much sediment. Amber color with a strong white wine grape smell. Low carbonation. Tastes of a nice mix of the wine grapes, Sauvignon Blanc, Gerwurztraminer, and Muscat with the Belgian Triple in the middle there. Mouthfeel u get a chamomile tea with honey on your tongue. Overall was very surprised how this held up. I thought I waited to long and it was gonna be one glass for me and the rest for the sink. Drink it now!

4oz draft pour into a tulip glass.

A: Light orange, copper color with no head.

S: Honey and lemongrass smells.

T: Slight fig and plum flavors.

M: Sticky, sweet mouthfeel.

O: Enjoyed the smells of this beer the most. Taste and mouthfeel were just missing that oomph.

Serving type: on-tap
