Another Bastard winner here, bold and in your face. Between the heavy, viscous malts and the sticky, earthy hops, it leaves little room for the 8+% ABV. In traditional Bastard style, everything in this brew is over the top and flawlessly executed. However, at $8 for a bomber, there really is no reason to choose this beer over Stone's Double Bastard, which is over 11% ABV for the same price and virtually the same flavor profile, just amped up a bit.
Overall this is a solid "A" rated brew, but in comparison with Stone's other offerings, I'd have to drop it to an "A-" based on value alone.

damn good, this takes the edges off some of the other bastards in a really great way. its got a deep dark red color, richer looking than the others, with a full inch of thick off white head. it smells only a little oaky, not too much of that one in the blend i dont imagine. a good mix of the sweet red malt and the burnt sugar complex of the other ones, i also dont get an obnoxious amount of alcohol which i kind of do in double bastard. this is more refined, more nuanced, more interesting, and certainly more enjoyable to drink than even the classic bastard in my opinion. the caramel desserty flavors without all the sugars is the great success of this beer, and the layers of grain are also beautiful. a really full bodied brew, a tough bomber to drink alone, if you want to stay coherent at least, and a great long aftertaste. filling but no more than necessary. a good food beer too, this worked well with fresh pheasant stew. dont know if they made this more than once or not, but i would try it again. thanks a lot to drlovemd87 for hooking it up.
