Lukcy Basartd opens to an intense hoppy aroma that spills over the open bottle with heavy, deep shades of grapefruit, grapefruit rind, pine resin, mint, eucalyptus, anise, and menthol. The beer in fact smells at first far more like a fresh-ground pound of hop pellets than a beer. After a few seconds these initial hop-heavy aromas fade somewhat, allowing an intensely sugary base to shine through, with orange, berry, apricot, peach, cherry, and white grape fruit esters, thick brown sugars, vanilla, and candi sugar. Toast crust and biscuit form an earthy base. As a whole, the nose is great, immediately promising to be a hophead’s dream, but then allowing enough sugars to come through to speak of a well-made all-around beer, instead of just a hop bomb.

On the tongue, the beer is intensely, unsurprisingly hoppy, with pine resin and grapefruit rind up front, supported by a varied hop armada of dandelion stem, mint, menthol, eucalyptus, and some of the largest anise flavors I’ve encountered in a beer. There are also a huge amount of sugars in here—there have to be, to be noticed against the hops—bringing orange, berry, cherry, apricot, and peach fruit notes, as well as brown sugars. Toast crust, burnt toast, and biscuit add earthy complexity. In subsequent sips the hops become even more pronounced, but the sugars seem to die off a little, or at least the tongue is so overwhelmed with bitterness that the sugars aren’t noticed. The beer does take on a medicine-like black licorice overtone in these subsequent mouthfuls, which combines with the pine resin and 8.5% ABV to form an oily, clingy, alcohol-vapor cloud that claws its way up the nasal cavities. The aftertaste is mainly bitter piney hops, with some sugars fighting for attention, and lingers for a long time. Mouthfeel is a slick medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is seriously hoppy beer, and anyone not familiar with the extremities to which hops can be pushed should stay very far away, as this will probably be so licorice and anise-laden as to be gag-worthy. But true hopheads will likely find this superb, featuring a stunning and powerful array of hop flavors. The beer does suffer somewhat from the heaviness of the hops, however, especially in the licorice overtone, and could have used either slightly less hops, or slightly more fruits to balance things out. Still, this is amazing brew, and worth trying.

Appearance - The beer was a dark copper color with a fluffy off-white head crowning the snifter. Lacing followed the sides of the glass.

Smell - The malts dominated the smell with notes of fresh bread and banana hovering in the background.

Taste - On the initiate taste, the bitterness of chocolate and alcohol strikes me. Caramel makes a brief appearance. Oaky notes and vanilla float in toward the back, leaving a dry woody impression.

Mouthfeel -Carbonation is modest with few warming qualities despite the ABV. Clearly the alcohol is well masked.

Overall - I aged this one for quite a while and must state that I am not sure the waiting was worth it.
