22oz bottle poured into a snifter. Enjoy by date of January 31, 2013. I chose to hang onto it longer.
A: Murky red-brown color with tawny hues. Creamy sand-colored head stands at a finger and a half initially, but eventually settles. Lacing is spotty.
S: Bready, toasted crust. Hints of golden raisin. Pleasing oak backing, slight vanilla pull. Semi-assertive herbal and piney hops shifts into tropical citrus notes of lemon and tangerine.
T: Very smooth malt tastes of creamed cereal grains, toffee, and bread crust. hints of golden raisin. Seasoned oak owns the mid palate with a drying woody vanilla pull. Hops add a charge of resiny bitterness toward the end, but it's mellowed and smoothed into the rest of the flavor profile quite seamlessly. Playful citrus notes and a touch of marmalade toward the back end. Long finish of hop spice, drying wood, and bread crust.
M: The body thick and filling, but not weighty. It has a whipped airy quality that allows it to glide over the palate. Ridiculous smoothness. Low carbonation. Stellar.
O: I like Arrogant Bastard, I really like Oaked Arrogant Bastard, and I love Double Bastard. What happens when you blend the three? Somehow something even better than the sum of its parts emerges. This beer is the definition of smooth. The flavors blend together seamlessly, the balance is perfect, and it's heavenly in the mouth. This instantly became a favorite of mine.
