Poured from a bottle into a standard flared tulip glass with a half finger of head.
Appearance - Pours a dark amber with a khaki head that somewhat lingers. One of the darker amber ales I've seen. Head slowly dissipates to form a ringlet around the edge of the surface with a few small ringlets throughout.
Smell - Some have said they detect cannabis in the aromas, but I'm not picking any of that up. Slightly piney, earthy tones. Small hints of spice and pepper.
Taste - Roasted, earthy flavor right off the bat. Small hints of hops, and a bit of citrus, but this beer has a very peppery, roasted, almost nutty flavor to it. Not bad, but one of the more toasty amber ales I've had. Nice bitter, nutty aftertaste, almost reminiscent of the aftertaste walnuts leave.
Mouthfeel - Not over carbonated, but a potent little fizz to it. Smooth finish, not quite clean, but very smooth. Slightly dry, but still moderately refreshing.
Overall - Overall, this is a very solid beer. From start to finish, I found it to be very enjoyable and very drinkable. Although this beer is available year round, I recommend it be enjoyed in the waning Summer/early fall months (as many amber ales are). Not quite a session drinking beer, I wouldn't mind having a few of these around to enjoy from time to time. All in all, this beer was a pleasant surprise. From start to finish, I found this beer to be very enjoyable.
