special growler fill at stone's pasadena outpost. dry hopped bastard delivers on what it portends to be: a more aromatic rendition of the classic arrogant bastard. ruddy brown or deep copper in color with a surprisingly small head. floral, grassy aromas on the initial nose, with underlying notes of caramel and candied orange and dankness. malts come through on the palate, but harmonize with the bittering hops to create a multilayer drinking experience. right, so that sounds pretentious - how about this: dry hopped arrogant bastard improves on the aromas of the stone standard bearer while delivering a well-balanced (if any stone beer can be balanced!) strong ale with equal attention being given to malts and hops. finishes bitter as one would expect. carbonation was lower than i would have prefered, and my growler was only 2 hours old!

Saw this on tap at The Bad Apple in Chicago and had to give it a try. Served in an Arrogant Bastard pint glass featuring the slogan "It's not too expensive, you're too cheap." Wonderful.
Appearance is very much like the original Arrogant Bastard, with a deep burgundy hue to the body. A small head the color of ever-so-lightly toasted white bread sits on top and leaves behind generous lacing as the brew is consumed. Arrogant Bastard (in any of its forms) can deliver more in this department, but the bartender chose to fill the glass almost to the rim. Can't fault the beer for that.
This beer smells absolutely divine. I spent the first few minutes after it arrived at our table just savoring the aroma. Scents of resinous pine and tropical & citrus fruits abound. This particular form of Arrogant Bastard makes its hop-forward character known immediately, as the dry hopping brings out some of the more subtle hoppy aromas that can be missing from regular versions of the beer.
The first taste repeated what my nose had already told me. This Bastard starts off with a delicious toasted malt base that quickly gives way to a powerful smack of fresh, piney and citrusy hops. There's no surprise here, and indeed the Bastard never fails to satisfy when I'm looking for something with assertive bitterness. It accompanied my Slow Burn burger (onions, bacon, white cheddar, Left Hand Milk Stout sautéed spicy chilies) perfectly.
Mouthfeel and drinkability put this brew somewhere between an IPA and a barleywine. I certainly could have a few of these, but I'd probably put them near the end of the night. Multiple Bastards will do nothing short of assaulting the tastebuds with no remorse, leaving you unable to taste much of anything else for the rest of the evening.

Served in a tumbler at Firkin.
Dry-hopped with Chinook, according to the tap handle. This stuff pours a lightly hazy tawny topped by a finger or so of cream foam. The nose comprises pine sap, grapefruit zest, orange rind, sweet caramel, and a hint of green grass. The taste brings in more of the same, though the hops really provide a strongly bitter bite here, with the caramel in the back, still as sweet as before, unable to cope. The body is a strong medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fairly dry finish. Overall, the dry-hopping seems to have really added a good amount of hoppy bitterness to an already beastly brew in that arena.

Imbibed at Finnegan's in Plainfield, IL, 11/19/2010.
Appearance -- Pours a hazy chestnut brown with rosy highlights and a finger of stiff parchment head. Massive bands of lace all the way down the glass.
Smell -- Massive bright citrus/fruity hops: grapefruit, tangerine, wetnap, watermelon, peach. Sturdy caramel base underlying. Pine resin is detectable, but distant second to the bright fruitiness of the dry-hopping.
Taste -- Tangerines and tropical fruit, grapefruit, honeydew melon, apricot. Malt base is nicely caramelized; nowhere near sticky or cloying but enough residual sugar to make those citrusy/fruity notes pop. Baseline resin bitterness keeps the drinkability high.
Mouthfeel -- Medium to full in body, medium carbonation. Good, but nothing to write home about. It works.
Drinkability -- This was really incredible. Heads and shoulders above regular and, formerly my favorite, Oaked AB. Incredibly aromatic, probably the best tropical fruit bomb of a beer I've had yet.

This brew was served from the cask (dry hopped with centennial hops) at the Tap and Mallet Vertical Epic tasting event. It arrived in a chalice glowing a ruby red-amber coloring. It held a two finger head of tan bubbles, showing great retention. Thick sheets and rings of lacing were left around the glass as it went. Moderate haze was noted, but no sediment was seen. Carbonation appeared active. The aroma gave grassy and green hop oils as its biggest contributor. These became more citric with warmth, and had a bit more wet soapiness on the back than usual. The malts were pale, with huge syrupy sweetness, and added fruity sweetness of nectarines, tangerines, and white sugar. Grit and dryness characterized the yeast. Our first impression was that the flavoring gave big herbal qualities to the hops, with nice spice and warmth to mix. As we sipped, herbal hops and black pepper mixed with pale and caramel malts. Citric rind bitterness came to the peak, giving big lemony freshness against a stark sweetness of caramel malts. Green plant stem freshness helped to further cut the musky caramel sweetness. The finish gave an even more planty bite, with those green oils and astringent dryness of the nose. Yeast and booze gave additional bite, while cooled citric sweetness helped to cool the palate. The aftertaste breathed of herbal hops, black pepper, bittered piney hops, light caramel, and soured lemon rind. The body was medium, and the carbonation was low. The slurp, sip, and froth were all decent, giving a nicely cooling coating. Waxy astringency was left streaked down the palate and tongue, with the wet juiciness of the hops at the outset keeping things flowing. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank easily
Overall, what we liked best about this beer was the freshness of hops through the flavoring. The nose started things off with grit and bite, but kept the hops juicy as hell and borderline untamable. The flavor followed suit nicely, with wet juiciness of flavoring and freshness. To the feel things were a bit light, but not overwhelmingly disappointing. This is a tasty brew, and a juicy, hoppy variant of a great beer.

A - appearance was good. Nice carbonation that lasted with some lacing.
S - smell of high crystal 100-s/caramel. Hops pretty laid back compared to Pale, Double IPA, Verticle.
T - taste was nice. No alcohol taste, well blended hop and malt balance.
M - Good mouth feel.
O - The best of the Stone's tasted so far. I'll admit I am not a hop fan, and this beer and another of their beers was more balanced. I would possible drink again.

On tap at the ColLAboration beer fest at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, CA.
Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is all about the hops with some herbal, grassy, pine, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is very much the same with all of the hop flavors and a nice malt backbone. There is a medium level of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is very hoppy yet very tasty.

I had 2 pints of this at Finnegan's in Plainfield, IL on 1/2/2011, served in a pint glass.
A= This ale poured a hazed reddish-brown color with a 1" tan head that retained very well. Huge sheets of foamy/sticky lace clung to my glass as the beer level receded.
S= Big burst of citrus and pine hoppiness, with some solid caramel malt undertones to back that up. Esters were medium and fruity. Alcohol aroma well hidden.
T= Just what I expected following the smell. Started off with lightly sweet caramel malt and biscuit notes, followed by an explosion of hop flavor. Complex citrus flavors reigned in by resiny pine dryness. The esters brought a tangerine/apricot fruitiness that melded well with everything else. Bitterness was classic Stone - firm but not overdone for the style - huge but not overpowering - in other words near perfect. Finished dry and bitter with amazing hoppy aftertaste.
MF= Medium body with a modest carbonation level that lifts the feel enough without it being too spritzy.
D= I liked this a lot and found it to be extremely drinkable despite the ABV and the huge hoppiness. Well made and worth seeking out.

Dry hopped with southern cross hops.
Color is a sunset copper. White head with lace.
Flavor profile is dank, weedy, and earthy. Very bright and citrusy. Grapefruit. It almost had a bubblegum flavor to it. Very malty. Caramel and bready.
Huge flavor profile. This is one of the better stone beers I have had! Lots going on here!
