"What do you call it when Greg takes his entire harvest
bounty of chili pepper varieties from his own personal garden, take half of them and add to...and thus ruin...an otherwise beautiful oak barrel of Double Dry Hopped Lukcy Basartd Ale?"

A: "A Crime!"

Q: "What do you call it when you take a sip of oak barrel aged Double Bastard Ale that's had the other half of the bounty of chili peppers from Greg's home garden ceremoniously added in, resulting in a punishingly intense level of hot pepper heat to an already overly intense beer whose elevated alcohol level caused a significant transference of pain-inducing

A: "Punishment."

In the glass the beer has substance. As you lift it to your mouth you get the pepper heat in the aroma but no direct burn in the mouth. It is mainly a smokey, peppery aftertaste that lingers and contributes to the depth of the beer. I love chili beers and this one is subtle.

Stone - Crime. 9.6% ABV. 500ml bottle split between two snifters.

Look: Pours an orange/copper color, with a white bubbly head that dissipates fairly quickly.

Smell: Up front is some tropical fruits, chilies, and hops, along with some oak notes from being barrel aged.

Feel: A little thin, but smooth, carbonated, and easy. some creaminess contributed by the head.

Taste: Starts off a little fruity and oaky, with some tones of the chilies present. On the back end the chilies begin to burn, but is not necessarily overpowering. On the aftertaste, the chilies overpower the oaky flavor, and continue to give a spicy burn, but fades surprisingly quick.

Overall: My first Chili style beer. After hearing about it, I figured it would be like drinking hot sauce, but was pleasantly surprised. I have not had the base beers that this is made from yet, the Arrogant Bastard, or Double Bastard, but did really enjoy this beer. The chili spiciness and flavor paired extremely well over a bowl of homemade chili.

500 ml bottle split betwwen two New Belgium snifters. Pours a rustic, dark red/brown and settles as a hazy, dark amber in the glass. Transluscent in appearance with little carbonation. A thin skirting of bubbly, light tan foam on top. Modest aroma of dark fruit, leather, caramel, oak, booze, and swet malt. Hints of chiles in there as well, but not as pronounced as the former. Strong notes of caramel, oak, sweet malts, and..chiles! Actually fairly smooth, especially considering the abv. Relatively sweet up until middleways, those peppers start to creep in. They only intensify from here on out, being the most pronounced on the finish and aftertaste.

Reading reviews on this beer, I thought it was going to be damn near undrinkable. But quite the opposite. It's decently balanced and has a nice bourbony feel to it. I'm pairing it with a bowl of home-made chile, and it's quite enjoyable.

"Got burnt once but that was only gonnorhea".....until I had this! Holy cow this is spicy. I enjoy spice...somewhat enjoy this. Glad I got to try. Would do again at a bottle share. Worth trying. Cheers!

500 mL bottle, Vintage 2015

A: Pours a murky reddish brown color with 2 fingers of head that slowly fades down to a decent cap that leaves some good lacing

S: Very malty up front with some smooth oaky, vanilla, and bourbon notes as well as some restrained peppery heat. Definitely mostly Lukcy Bastard with a little heat

T: The peppery heat comes alive to start things off, but again, it's not nearly as overwhelming as some of the reviews claim. Some nice maltiness cuts the initial heat, followed by some sweetness from the bourbon barrels. Vanilla and oak are nice and subtle, but compliment the heat and base in a unique and interesting way. Any alcohol is completely covered by the malt and capsaicin heat. Finishes with lingering heat and some earthy hop presence

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation

O: Despite the mostly shitty reviews due to people handling heat in a very poor way, this one was a very solid brew with the BBA Lukcy Bastard being complimented by the peppers in a unique way that you simply won't find in very many places, if at all aside from G. Koch & Co. a la Stone. Obviously, if you don't like heat, you won't like this beer. At all. If you like spicy things, this one might be for you as long as the $17 price tag doesn't defer you

I was told this was a little hot when it first came out so I cellered it for 2 years. Pours dark Amber in color with a nice light kahiki head. Smell has tons of hot pepper aromas forward. Some nice vanilla oak and toffe aromas in the background give this a unique aroma. Woah the peppers in this are overwhelmingly hot and overpower everything else.

Poured cooled from bottle in to a Double Bastard whiskey glass.

Golden brown, burnt caramel color. Moderately murky with noticeable sediment evident even in the first pour. A thin ephemeral layer of foam forms with no lacing.

Strong floral aroma, with nutmeg, licorice, cooked beans, roasted chili peppers.

Prominent fruity character is overtaken by the assertive chili fieriness, but is complemented by puckering hoppiness, caramel malt backbone of the Lucky Bastard ale, and oak notes from the admittedly short (2 months) barrel aging. The spicy level is a notch higher than Habanero Sculpin, similar to but not quite as strong as eating a raw green jalapeno.

On the high end of the medium body spectrum, with very low carbonation (maybe due to barrel aging). Like after a bite of a jalapeno, a moderate spiciness lingers for a while but is not strong enough to be unbearable for the seasoned chilihead.

While it’s hard to drink more than a sip at a time, it is a pleasurable experience for the chiliheads among the hopheads.

Reviewed on 12/25/13. Poured from bottle into ~10-oz taster glass
A: Reddish-brown with copious chunks (Mine was the last pour). Little head, and there was very little noise when the bottle was corked.
S: Jalapeno jelly, slight bourbon.
T: Not a lot more than pepper heat. No alcohol heat. The heat does fade nicely though.
M: Tingle at the outset on the tongue which later moves to the throat. Hot.
O: After 5 sips, my belly is starting to grumble in protest. Only 1/3 of a bottle at a time. This beer might be nice with BBQ.

750ml Bottle
2013 Series
Batch No. 08

Poured into a chalice a nice slightly cloudy golden amber color, very nice carbonation, with a nice one-finger creamy off-white head, which leaves some small islands and some nice sticky lacing. The nose is hoppy, with some nice malt notes, some pepper/spice notes, some dark fruits. The taste is pretty good, kinda reminds me of a barleywine with hot peppers, hoppy, slight malt note, dark fruits, very spicy/hot for a beer. Medium body, with a slightly dry/bitter/hot finish. Overall, a very tasty/nice brew, surprised the shit out of me how hot/spicy this brew is, definitely a few notches above any spicy/chile brew I've ever had to date.

A: murky brown, slight green red yellow hue like tri color peppers
S: Explosion of hot hot peppers
T: what the hell is this? Nothing about this was pleasant
F: I think I am now a fire breathing Dragon
O: cool for the novelty of it, but otherwise this falls flat. Way over priced for what was offered in this bottle. Also it should be known i shared this with two friends whom eat the spiciest foods in existence. They love hot food passionately and neither of them enjoyed this.

Looked and smelled great. Nice heat in the nose. That heat carried forward just a tad bit for my taste. Straight heat, burning and not in a good way. They did what they said they would and create a Crime. They stuck to their word, it was hot!

On tap at Verdugo Bar in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a murky dark orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Tiny particles of sediment are seen suspended in the beer after the pour. Smell is of roasted chile, fresh chile, chile juice, and raisin aromas. Taste is much the same with malt, dark fruit, raisin, roasted chile, and chile powder flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of chile heat that lingers on the palate long after each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice mix of spicy chile and dark fruit qualities.

Serving type: on tap.

This was not good. I contemplated marinading some sort of meat in this because it was flat out not drinkable. I like spicy beers too, this was too much. 1st Drain pour.

I love hot and spicy food and despite the reviews I thought I'd like this beer because I've mostly been desensitized to pepper heat and I really enjoy this style. I was so wrong.
This beer was awful. I had a few sips and poured it down the drain. The only "crime" here is that this swill cost me $19 US before taxes and conversion to $CAN. Horrible!

Don't buy this beer if it's still around in your area.

Had to give this a try despite my total dislike of extreme spice in my beer. It was even worse than I had imagined. I could only manage a couple sips and I'd had enough. Quite an experience though

First off I love Stone and what they mean to beer in general. This beer highly degrades anything they stand for. Arrogant bastard was a mess up turned into a beautiful beer! Completely agreed. This beer is a travesty. A complete over reaching disgusting marketing scam on the beer public in general. This is like getting a prized plate of Kobe beef bred in the highlands of the Himalayas and "oh by the way we just covered it in cheap fucking jalapeno peppers!". Are you retarded!!! Its a soul crushing, pallet wasting pile of shit. The fact that the brothers gave it an 80 makes me want to hate them. How? Just How! This is everything they say they stand against. Id like to get them and everyone stone in a room and watch them drink this atomic fueled overspiced garbage and tell me its an 80! Politics. This is everything we all should fight against. An obvious over stimulated over marketed beer that makes no sense on a beer lovers pallet. Shame on you Stone.

Not really sure how to rate this objectively. The smell is almost exactly like Tabasco Sauce. The taste is very similar to Tobasco as well. For the style, it is probably well done, but I couldn't drink more than a couple sips. Not my taste.

Can't taste the bourbon at all, the peppers completely overpower everything.

Served from a caged and corked bomber into a snifter glass. Beer aged for approximately one year.
Aroma-Full-on spicy chilies and malt note in the background.
Taste-A literal "hot mess". Even with, or maybe because of, a year in the cellar this brew was just too much heat and pepper flavor to achieve any real balance in my opinion. I split this brew with another veteran craft beer drinker and we were hard pressed to finish it all. We didn't have the tastebuds left to try the "Punishment". I'll give that one another year and see what happens. Here's hoping.

Never on this site have I seen a more divisive beer. Full disclosure, I love chili beer. This should be fun.

Looks like a dark IPA, smells and tastes like habañero peppers. So damn good!

What did you all expect?

Not for those who do not enjoy heat. The Oaked bastard taste comes out very strongly, followed by an intense heat which lingers, and settles into the glorious lucky bastard finish. Fantastic.

overpowering pepper flavor, bourbon taste is almost demolished and barely perceptible. A sipping brew for those that like heat, lots of heat. But this bastard was destroyed (ruined per Stone). Rather than waste the rest, I used the 2nd half of the bottle to marinade a skirt steak for Carne Asada, interesting enough, here the bourbon barrel flavor came out stronger than the peppers. Although this is a rather expensive marinade and still was not up to my usual skirt steak seasoning, although it was interesting.

This is spicy...For me, it wasn't enjoyable to drink. I imagine, for those who love pepper, this is great. Even thought this wasn't very enjoyable to drink, it is well made. I love hot and spicy food, but this isn't my cup of tea.
