12oz bottle into a nice new tasting glass. Purchased at Warehouse Beverage for around $4 for the single.
The beer looks dead coming out of the bottle and splashing into my Lost Abbey tulip. There's no signs of head whatsoever; that being said, there's a ring of white foam that tries to reawaken but can't. No real lace to speak of either.
As I lean in to get a waft of the beer and stare at the depths of its mahogany and ruby, I hope this beer is not flat. The smell is full of dark fruit notes. There are ripe plums, caramel and a hint of scotch peat-smoked malt. The nose is pretty expressive and pleasant.
So, average look but good nose, on to the tiebreaker - the taste. There is a huge sweet malt component upfront, then a ton of raisin and bread. I get a hint of chocolate as well, then thing start to peel away. There's a flash of peat, then some booze and lingering raisin and bread. The booze is only somewhat concealed. The beer is good overall, but I guess I expected something with a bit more identity from three of the nation's premier breweries. This is good but has the personality of the scotch ale at "Bigtime Bland Brewing Company".
But what's this? A last minute change in the scores? The case here is that the mouthfeel is the best part of this beer. No, it turns out this beer is not flat. Instead, it's silky with just a hint of carbonation and no stickiness that beers of this style often risk. Drinkable and a good beer, I just wish this had something more unique to it. That being said, it's a drinkable beer mostly due to the concealment of the booze and the mouthfeel.
