So often it seems like a beer with two main ingredients on the marquee will have one flavor dominate over the other.

This is the case with Stone Cherry Chocolate Stout. The dark chocolate flavor is strong, whereas the cherry is faint and only comes on as the stout warms up.

Fortunately, the chocolate is warm, rich and dense - one of the better chocolates I've had in a porter. When I see a title like cherry-chocolate, I'm thinking ice cream sundae or syrup. But, it's not the sugar that is working here, but more the intensity (bitterness) of the bean tingling your palette.

Which brings us to the cherry, which is almost non-present at the initial pour (into a delirium noel snifter for those who care), both in taste and scent. In fact, there is very little nose to this beer when cold.

The faint A-roma of cherry grows the warmer the beer gets and the taste increases to the point where you can believe that there is tincture of cherry here. Guess this is my way of saying don't buy Stone Cherry Chocolate Stout if you're mainly a cherry lover.

The pour was typical of a dark chocolate stout, thick and black with a thin, sticky brown head.

So, to sum, I wouldn't run to this beer while in the grips of a sugar jones. But at three bucks for a 12 oz bottle (BevMo), it's a high flavor, low dollar beer that I'll try again.

FYI, the Stone delivery dude was there when I picked a few of these up - he said there will be only 50 cases delivered to Orange County, CA (pop 2 million or so).

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a nice large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light cherry with limited residual sugars notes and some black chocolate is really interesting. Taste is also a very nice mix of light cherry notes with some good black chocolate notes with a lightly sweet finish. Body is quite full for style with good carbonation. Quite enjoyable overall but I was expecting a bit more cherry notes to this beer.

Had this last night during our "Night of a Thousand Stouts" beer party my wife and I hosted. It smelled good, could detect the chocolate and cherry notes, the look was a little watery and thin, same with the overall mouthfeel. While it did deliver the chocolate covered cherry flavor I was expecting, it wasn't as good as the Ten Fidy we had just sampled right before it.

2011 bottling. Served slightly chilled into a tulip glass.

Cherry Chocolate Stout is very dark brown on the pour and nearly black in the glass. It has thin tan head that settles quickly to a skim layer.

Aroma is sweet and roasty with hints of cherry and chocolate.

Flavor is more bold in the cherry character but still has a rich robust stout base beer. There is more bitterness than sweetness which is unexpected given the name. Chocolate is there as is the vanilla but it never drinks like a dessert beer.

Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with a little more carbonation than a beer of this style really needs.

Overall a decent flavored stout but not outstanding.

Sampled from a 12oz bottle. Thanks surge1311.

A - Big and black with no light coming through. A small tan head. The beer sticks to the glass nicely.

S - As billed, cherries and chocolate. But the chocolate fades and the cherries take over. Vanilla and brown sugar poke through at times.

T - Again, cherry and chocolate. Also a mild sweetness. The flavors are bold and linger a long time. The cherry is a bit too dominant and eventually wears you down.

M - A moderate consistency with a low carbonation.

O - A good beer and well worth a try but one was probably enough.
