500ml corked & caged bottle poured into a Harpoon 100 Barrel Series gold rimmed stemmed glass.
A - Pours a very dark brown that appears mostly clear in the glass with 2 fingers of dense and fluffy dark tan/brown foam on top. Head lingers for a minute or two and slowly fizzles away leaving light frothy lacing on the glass.
S - Oh Wow! This smells amazing. Quite nutty and rather chocolatey up front. Sweet bourbon blends in so perfectly here, I can't imagine this beer without it. Not boozy at all...just fleshy coconut, smooth vanilla, rich and smooth coffee, yellow cake batter. Definitely one of the best smelling beers I've ever had.
T - Rich coffee up front, medium roasted, a bit astringent. The bourbon plays off the coffee well, just coming on as the coffee starts to fade to the background...almost like a splash of bourbon was poured into black coffee. Bourbon blends off to quite smooth coconut, vanilla and a mellow nuttiness and finally gives way to the coffee again at the finish. Hard for this to live up to the aroma, but this is really, really good.
M - Medium bodied, but wish there was a bit thicker feel here to make this ideal. Carbonation consists of fine bubbles, tingley and at a lowish level. Super smooth and all of the flavors play off of each other so well...this is an excellent dessert by itself.
O - I sought this one out for a long time and for a while I didn't think I'd ever get to try this...so glad I did! I had high hopes, but this met and exceeded them, which doesn't happen to often lately. Super dessert beer with so much going on - coffee, chocolate, mild bourbon (barrel is subtle and so well integrated here - adding to the base beer without overpowering or distracting), coconut, nuttiness, vanilla...just outstanding. Gonna have to seek out another bottle I guess.

Reviewing the Bourbon Barrel Aged Kona Coffee Macadamia Coconut Porter, a collaboration between San Diego area homebrewer Ken Schmidt, Stone Brewing Company and Maui Brewing Company. The name of the beer is pretty evocative of what it is.
Summer 2011 vintage caged and corked bottle, one of 672 produced. Served in a stemmed taster glass and enjoyed on 11/07/13 at the Chicago Craft Beer Lover's event hosted at The Beer Temple. Huge shout out and thanks to beeradvocate user Chi81 for bringing this surprise treat, one that I have long wanted to try and since given up on ever ticking. Review is from iPhone notes.
Appearance: Pours a soda color with minimal head off the pour that totally settles. Oily legs, but poor lacing/retention. 3.5/5
Smell: Roast, coconut, cocoa, light oak and light molasses. A dash of fruity oxidation, which melds nicely with the other complexities of the nose. No single character, not even the coconut, takes the center stage here; all are well balanced in proportion to each other. 4.25/5
Taste: The toasted coconut flavor is not nearly as prominent as I expected it to be, but still there to a nice degree. Also present is a mix of chocolate, brown sugar and light oak. Really nice integration of the components, but the flavor is not very bold. Traditional bourbon flavor featured in bourbon barrel aged stouts/porters is virtually non-existent. Coconut flavor grows a little bit when I let the beer sit and warm in the glass. 4/5
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Slick mouthfeel. Good balance, with a light sweetness. 4.25/5
Overall: A lot more subtle in flavor and delicate than anticipated. I enjoyed this, but imagine it has faded over the past two-plus years.
Cost: $25 for a 500 ml bottle.

Picked up this bottle direct from the brewery on 6/25/11. Opened on the night I moved into my first house. Popped the caged and corked bottle, and poured into my Deschutes tulips glass...
A - Pours a very dark brown, with a brown 1 finger head that fades rather quickly. Comes back when swirled, but no real legs on this one. Maybe decreased head retention due to ageing?
S - Bourbon, vanilla, and dark chocolate. One the second sniff, I'm getting hints of black licorice.
T/M - The taste is amazing, matches the smell very well. Woodsey bourbon barrel and vanilla assult my palette. Very faint coconut flavor, but no noticable macadamia nut. Medium-heavy mouthfeel, slightly under carbonated, possibly from the age.
O - An amazing barrel aged beer for sure! No alcohol heat on this at all, and the flavors really develop as it warms slightly. Glad I had the opportunity to purchase this, but sad it's gone now.
