500ml C&C bottle. Served in a snifter.

Picked this guy up about a year ago at the brewery. Been in the 55 degree cooler ever since.

Pours opaque super dark brown, just about black. Just a millimeter of light gets through. Covered with half a finger of dark beige foam. Settles to a thin ring of very dense bubbles. A few dots of lacing.

Aroma is quite dusty. Lots of oaky wood, nutty dry macadamias, rich roasted coffee, lightly sweet chocolate malt. Not as big as I was expecting, but good.

Taste really closely follows the nose. Bitterness and sweetness are extremely well balanced and are both at a pleasant moderate level. Roasted coffee with hints of coconut. Oak and vanilla with a fairly light tinge of bourbon. Coconut emerges much stronger in the finish, which dries up as well. No real sign of alcohol, it's buried in there.

Body is fairly thin for what I was expecting, but a nice dose of medium carbonation makes for a great feel and a very drinkable brew.

I never had a chance to try the original collaboration beer, but I certainly dig this one.

Bottle (2011)

Thanks for opening this with me, DarthKostrizer!

(Aged for 6+ months)

Very dark brown in color, bordering on black, but not quite there. Small dark brown crown that remains a ring atop the beer. This leaves sticky spots of lace down the glass. Pretty and appropriate.

The aroma is probably this beer's best aspect, with good amounts of earthy bourbon, coffee grounds, mild vanilla, and good nut character. This is rich, complete, sweet, and complex.

The flavor is similarly nice, though the flavors seem a bit muted when compared to the aroma. Coffee, vanilla, earth, and bourbon all combine nicely.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Creamy, easy to drink, rich, and very, very little alcohol harshness.

Good enough, though I actually expected (hoped?) this would bem uch better. I have not been impressed with Stone's barrel-aged offerings for the most part (other than Stone IRS).

500ml corked & caged bottle poured into a Harpoon 100 Barrel Series gold rimmed stemmed glass.

A - Pours a very dark brown that appears mostly clear in the glass with 2 fingers of dense and fluffy dark tan/brown foam on top. Head lingers for a minute or two and slowly fizzles away leaving light frothy lacing on the glass.

S - Oh Wow! This smells amazing. Quite nutty and rather chocolatey up front. Sweet bourbon blends in so perfectly here, I can't imagine this beer without it. Not boozy at all...just fleshy coconut, smooth vanilla, rich and smooth coffee, yellow cake batter. Definitely one of the best smelling beers I've ever had.

T - Rich coffee up front, medium roasted, a bit astringent. The bourbon plays off the coffee well, just coming on as the coffee starts to fade to the background...almost like a splash of bourbon was poured into black coffee. Bourbon blends off to quite smooth coconut, vanilla and a mellow nuttiness and finally gives way to the coffee again at the finish. Hard for this to live up to the aroma, but this is really, really good.

M - Medium bodied, but wish there was a bit thicker feel here to make this ideal. Carbonation consists of fine bubbles, tingley and at a lowish level. Super smooth and all of the flavors play off of each other so well...this is an excellent dessert by itself.

O - I sought this one out for a long time and for a while I didn't think I'd ever get to try this...so glad I did! I had high hopes, but this met and exceeded them, which doesn't happen to often lately. Super dessert beer with so much going on - coffee, chocolate, mild bourbon (barrel is subtle and so well integrated here - adding to the base beer without overpowering or distracting), coconut, nuttiness, vanilla...just outstanding. Gonna have to seek out another bottle I guess.

Thanks to DarthKostrizer for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours an opaque black with a khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, nuts, bourbon, and wood. Taste is much the same with a mild roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with very nice aromas and flavors.

Thanks Starr, one of the stars of our Stone night for sure. Beer served in a Stone glass. Beer is black with a thin lazy tan head of small bubbles, minimal lacing, some carbonation, Looks OK.

Aroma is sweet, liquor, oaky, mild coconut (power of suggestion there).

Beer is medium to light in body ,sweet up front, nice bitter finish, strong flavors, nice roastiness, flaked coconut, nutty, nice. It was well balanced and flavorful. I enjoyed the shit out of this beer.

From 03/30/12 notes. Big thanks to starrdogg for sharing this one; very cool to tyr side by side with the normal version.

a - Poured a very dark brown with a few bubbles of head and light carbonation. Almost looks black, and looks exactly like the normal version.

s - Smells of strong coffee, roasted malts, cream, vanilla, chocolate, and very light bourbon. Nose is much stronger than the normal version but I'm guessing that is because it is fresher.

t - Tastes of coffee, roasted malts, bourbon, chocolate, cream, vanilla, coconut, toasted malts. More bourbon then the nose but still not overpowering. Very nice.

m - Medium body and low carbonation. Super smooth and creamy, and easy to drink. No heat, awesome body.

o - Overall a really nice beer, and an improvement on the normal version in my opinion. Adds some light bourbon to the nose and taste but doesn't overpower it at all. Would love to have it again.

Huge thanks to starrdogg for bringing this bottle to the Stone tasting. Served in a Stone goblet.

This was the highlight of the night for me. I loved the base beer when it was younger, and enjoyed this one even more so.

Pours a moderately-dark brown color with a thin off-white head and a good collar throughout. The nose hits hard from the beginning with really fantastic notes of bourbon and coconut along with some chocolate, oak, and vanilla in the background. The vanilla carries through to the flavor along with the bourbon and coconut, and just does wonders.

Body is medium and oh so smooth. The coconut bourbon combo is hard to beat. Wow. Some oak and vanilla carry through the finish, which has a bit of remaining sweetness.

Overall, this was one of the better barrel-aged beers that I've had in quite some time. Really fantastic work by the people at Stone, as well as their collaborators. Cheers.

Shared by starrdogg. Thanks Matt.

The beer is dark brown, somewhat see-through, with a small beige head. The aroma brings coconut, bourbon, booze, vanilla. Nice flavor. I really like this beer. Complex and full of flavor, with a delightful blend of chocolate, oak, and coconut. Easy to drink. Medium bodied with solid carbonation level. I would definitely have this again. Recommended.
