This ale is brewed with pumpkins, yams, toasted fenugreek, lemon verbena and birch bark. This pours a really nice dark coffee brown with nice hints of beet red. The head isn’t too prominent and it’s more fizzy than anything. It does expose a bitter oily aroma, reminiscent of hops but its likely the fenugreek spices, but the yams and pumpkins aren’t really apparent in the nose. The flavor tells a different story, it’s spiced well, the yams and pumpkins are present but it still retains the more bitter curried spice elements from the fenugreek. The verbena comes in nicely with the curry-like flavors all bound with some grain and biscuit flavors, almost like a pie. The body lends to the pie like aspects as its full bodied and very strong.
Verdict: A very unique take on pumpkin and spiced beers. It’s more bitter than most and more beer like, less gimicky. It has a very complex flavor profile, reminds me of Arrogant Bastard in many ways. These three breweries really did a great job.
