Belgian Bananas and Clove, Warming Sensation, Slight Cinnamon, Prunes, Plums, and other dark fruits, not a lot of chili heat left.

Poured into a large tulip glass a slightly hazed maber with sticky1/2 finger off white head,cinnamon and earthy chili's in the nose,light phenols poke thru as the beer warms a little.Belgian yeast flavors at the onset,phenolic and spiced to go along with light cinnamon flavors,again the chili flavors are more earthy lending a little warming on the way down.Not bad,Iam not a huge Belgian yeast fan but the subtle chili,and cinnamon flavors are nice.

A: A medium copper with fair amount of chill haze that fades as it warms and is totally expected with a older beer. The head is tan and made of fine bubbles with a decent retention span.

S: A medium aroma reminiscent of sun-dried chili peppers along with a low orange ester and a low malty complexity like that an Old Ale. There is a low alcohol aroma and a touch of spicy phenols. A bit of soy comes out as it warms up.

M: There is an initial orange-like fruitiness with some spice to start with the spice building a bit as you sip. The balance is somewhat sweet with a medium malt sweetness having a little caramel character against a low hops bitterness but the sweetness more countered by the spice and alcohol. The finish is medium-sweet and the aftertaste is spicy and a low fruitiness that reminds me of a Dubbel.

M: A medium bodied beer with a medium amount of carbonation. There is a linger light tingle from the spice but not detracting.

O: An unusual beer that I can appreciate for it's bold approach and balance.

Looks mahogany, with some redder tints. Smells pretty good. You can smell the cinnamon and a spicier undercurrent. There's a lighter yeast scent, as well. Full sharpness to start. The cinnamon and what tastes like nutmeg present themselves shortly after. The endgame is held by the hops, which throw bitterness in all directions, and the Anaheim pepper element, which twists the bitterness in an interesting direction. The final lingering element is spicy cinnamon, so the ale succeeds in that. Wouldn't want to drink this regularly, but it is a good limited release.

A - Clear brown, with ruby highlights. Big frothy light tan head, that stay around for awhile with moderate carbonation.

S - Spicy, the cinnamon can be picked out but the yeast seems to be adding more spicy aromas like clove.

T - Lots going on here, the malt is almost overwhelmed by cinnamon and cloves and I guess what might be the peppers but just comes across as a strange medicinal flavor. The medicinal flavor then turns into an astringent aftertaste made bitter by the hops.

M - Nicely attenuated, warming quality, with a bit of sparkle from the carbonation and alcohol.

O - This beer looks great, smells good, and feels good but where it counts most...taste...it just isn't very good. I have only had the last few Vertical Epic Ales but this is easily the worst.

A nice deep red/orange pour with great clarity and a half inch of bubbly white foam atop the brew. Looking good. Aromas start off with caramel, fruity tones and lots of yeast phenolic notes. Cinnamon and a touch of vegetal chili pepper, but it is rather mellow.

Sweet caramel mixing in with dark fruits. Big phenolic Belgian yeast with lots of clove, banana and spice. Cinnamon definitely makes it presence known along with a touch of chili pepper. Flows down with more sweetness and a slight hint of heat. Yeast lingers on after each sip.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and a touch slick with good carbonation. Goes down pretty easy considering the ABV. Overall, it doesn't really all come together for me...the sweetness with the chili and forward yeast. Was hoping for a touch more heat / chili flavor as well.

On tap at When Pigs Fly in Kittery. In a pint glass the beer was a red/orange/brown color with a small tan head.

Sweet malt and spice aroma. Warming in my nose.

The tastes worked well together. Caramel malt and clove. Chile present, warm, pleasant.

I enjoyed this beer. Nothing over the top, just a nice melange.

Will drink this again.

A - Pours a deep amber with half a finger of light tan head. Head has decent retention before fading to a thin cap.

S - Cinnamon, banana and some candi sugar initially, followed by subtle green chili, a bit of booze and toasted malt.

T - Similar to smell, with quite a bit of clove and a more noticeable chili presence. Definitely not too spicy, but the peppers do add a subtle warmth. Interesting and pretty good overall. The peppers, cinnamon and clove are a bit of an odd combination, but certainly interesting.

M - Medium mouthfeel that is a bit sticky, but finishes dry and bitter.

O - Clearly not an everyday beer, but an interesting and mostly successful experiment.

22oz bottle. Pours a reddish amber with a medium creamy off white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is dubbel like with banana and cloves and some sweet malt with some chilis and cinnamon thrown in.

The flavor is sweet bready malt with bananas and clove. Some spice from the chili and cinnamon comes out in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and a little watery.

Overall, I remember liking earlier samples more. This was just too much sweet malts and bananas. I remember less dubbel and more cinnamon and chili which was better.

22oz brown bomber with an obvious vintage date.

LOOK: Garnet amber color, healthy looking head.

SMELL: Cinnamon stick, Anaheim chilies, golden raisins, candied fruit, toasted grain, boozy alcohol.

TASTE: Cinnamon, mild chili pepper, toasted bread, dusty powdered clove, banana taffy, medicinal phenols, clean alcohol, hop bitterness, treacle, chaotic finish.

Nearly a palate overload, thankfully I prepared for this beer and I guess I am a pro more or less so I can roll with the punches. Flavors come in waves, cinnamon and chili then the Belgo-yeast character and of course the generous handful of hops all surrounded by a well balanced malt backbone. The heat, its from the alcohol ... not the chili. Possibly the most enjoyable Vertical Epic from Stone I have had that was not cellared.

Typical Stone Epic bomber.

Pours medium murky auburn, under a dense darker tan head, that stays a while, before going to a film, collar and low lying sheeting and fine lace.

Cinnamon bounces out of the glass and upon the nostrils, with a hint of mild chili also making itself heard.

Bold and over the top flavorful and complex brew, more cinnamon, Belgian yeasty phenols glaring, chili present but remaining on the calm side. The expected Stone hop load unmistakable in the finish. Smooth on the tongue and coating the entire mouth. I enjoyed every sip especially as it warmed.

Definitely will be picking up more bottles, it will be interesting to see what some time in the bottle adds to the mix.

The beer pours a clear amber color with a large white head. The aroma has quite a bit of caramel and toffee, as well as a lot of green peppers and some assorted spices such as nutmeg.

The flavor is has a lot of cinnamon, peppers, toffee and Belgian yeast. All of the spices and peppers surprisingly work well together and make the beer enjoyable. There is also a touch of alcohol, but not as much as I expected.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Appearance - Stone VEA 11 appears a very deep enticing hue of reddish amber, almost like a red ale.

smell- it's a whirlwind of fruit, belgian yeastiness, and of course the cinnamon and chile that make this beer special.

taste - Pretty much a thoughtful interpretation of a strong belgian ale. High alcohol and belgian yeasts blend nicely with the chile, cinnamon, and sour notes.

mouthfeel - to me this beer had the sharp feel of a red ale, but without the sourness. Its delicately carbonated, and has the expected texture of a fine belgian ale.

overall - an interesting take on a classic style, high quality, and as others have said, a palate overload. I wouldnt expect much less from Stone, and this beer only being brewed one time, if you ever see it, TRY IT!

22oz bottle at fridge temp poured into an ommegang goblet.

pours out a coppery red color with just the slightest bit of haze, actually pretty clear for a belgian. some decent light biege colored head, kept a thin patchy layer. some tiny spots of lace.

mostly lots of estery, phenolic belgian yeast. some bannana, clove, and flouride blends with a sweet fruity malt. the beer really has to warm up for the cinnamon and then finally the pepper aromas to show up, but the belgian aspect of the beer takes center stage.

very similar to the aroma. sweet malt, fruity, flouride like esters, phenolic and clove belgian yeast with a touch of bannana. some hops provide just enough of a backbone. just a touch of heat on the finish, almost not really enough to even notice. as it warms, cinnamon comes in then a touch of a lightly roasted pepper flavor as well.

medium bodied, no alcohol noticable besides a subtle warming effect after each sip. drinks pretty easily considering its ABV.

i was a little turned off at first, finding it hard to pick out any cinnamon or pepper. just enough comes out as it warms, but maybe not enough IMO. i was really looking forward to this (love chili beers!), but im a little let down, the recent past vertical epics were a little better. maybe if i caught this fresher i would have had more pepper and cinnamon?

A deep auburn bordering on caramel brown with a thin light brown head.

The aroma is a strange combination of tangy Belgian yeast, caramel malts, a bit of banana, and a very mild, earthy chile presence. They don't seem to blend particularly well together, though on paper I know it doesn't sound all that bad. Maybe it's the cinnamon's fault?

The flavor is just as confused as the aroma. The Belgian yeast is dominant along with a sweet banana flavor, some cracked black pepper, and just a hint of chile warming lingers. On paper, it doesn't sound that bad, but it really wasn't at all enjoyable.

Medium to thick bodied with moderate carbonation.

A mess. I struggled through my 8oz. and didn't finish the glass.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness Chalice. Consumed after aging past the recommended date of 12/12/12.

Appearance: Pours a very hazy brownish copper orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid three fingers of light tan head which slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A bready and fruity aroma with a sharp mix of spices. Toasted malts with good hints of biscuit, yeast, toffee, and a little caramel. Big hint of bananas with some apple and dark prune. Sharp hints of chili peppers along with some clove and cinnamon spices. Also a slight hint of citrus fruit and brown sugar. A little scent of alcohol comes through. A nicely complex and interesting aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma hints, a complex mix of bready malts, spices, and fruit esters. Sweet bready malts with a taste of biscuit, yeast, toast, toffee, and caramel. A little brown sugar sweetness. Good taste of bananas and apples. Also some dark prunes and dates along with a little citrus. Notes of spices including chili peppers, cinnamon, and cloves. The spicing is quite noticeable but doesn't overwhelm the other flavors, they blend in nicely. Tastes similar to a dark Belgian ale with a good dose of added pepper and cinnamon.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, spicy, and fairly smooth. Alcohol heat is felt a little.

Overall: A really good take on a Belgian style ale. The spices added are just enough to add a interesting profile without making it too hot.

I cellared one of these bad boys for a little more than 3 years and it was just as good as the one i enjoyed sometime after 12.12.12. I wish I could recall how good it was then, but I remember being stunned by the balance and complexity of flavor. You would be hard pressed to name Anaheim chiles as an ingredient without knowing it before hand. I haven't had many beers with chile as an ingredient but i have to say these guys knew what they were doing. I drank this beers with a handful of my friends and we all were impressed. It paired really well with the Mediterranean food we had just eaten and we all thought it was a standout amongst the beers we had recently been drinking. I definitely left this experience happy especially considering how long i held on to it!

Bought this one a few weeks ago, and it didn't seem right cracking it for no good reason, so why not Turkey Day?

A - Poured from a 750ml bottle into a tulip, the bottling date is readily apparent. Pours a deep, deep red, easily mistaken for some brown, but it's definitely dark ruby red. Two fingers of tan head dissipate quickly, leaving some lacing.

S - Sweet malts and cinnamon are up front, with just slight hoppiness in the back.

T - The hops are a lot more noticeable in the initial taste, more than the smell, but the malts are not to be ignored, with a definite caramel taste. Chilies are present, but not in the way you might think. More in the flavor than heat, and the cinnamon is just there enough to bring it all into focus. Pretty sweet for a chile style.

M - Sweet, dry finish with some noticeable alcohol burn. None of the stuff you'd expect from the chilies.

O - I expected a lot more heat from this beer, but it makes up for it with character and flavor. Certainly worth a turn of the head while it's still around.

Poured into a chalice. I guess "pale ale" is a relative term in this case; but I'd be disappointed if beers in this series stayed within style lines. It's a dark cloudy orange with a lively white head that dissipates leaving some lacing on the glass. Smell is quite perplexing; warm and spicy, presumably the intermingling of the chilies and the belgian yeast. Taste follows; no actual spice from the chilies, but a delicious warm flavor. The "belgian" character is very diminished in this beer (which is good for me, I don't like belgians). Alcohol isn't noticeable at all, surprising for 9andsomething%. Mouthfeel is rather full. Even though it's more of an experimental beer, it's the best belgian-style beer I've had so far.

Poured out a color that I usually don't associate with a pale ale of any nationality: auburn and brown? A little cloudy looking for a pale ale too. Nice offwhite head on the top, about 3/4" deep. Aroma had me going into the belgian wit place. We're already two qualities in, and neither one makes me think belgian pale ale. Coriander and cardamom have no place in any pale ale.

Taste has some spice flavors, toffee, caramel, cinnamon and a little booze with a hint of citrus throughout. I wasn't the biggest fan of it, but it was seemingly a tad complex. And I've had worse vertical epics to be sure. Couldn't really pick up any chile pepper addition.
Clove keeps coming out more and more as it warmed. Complex stuff, but not really up my alley.

Thanks to Sebastian for bringing this one to the March Madness bottle share. Unfortunately David Hurley, beverage peon at the El Dorado Casino decided to renege on the word of the El Dorado and shut down our bottle share a day early, because it offended his BMC reps that we were having a good time not drinking the $40 to drink all day Bud Light deal. Screw that guy and establishment that supposedly supports craft beer. But thanks to Sebastian for bringing this beer.

Showed up at my local last week, not as bad as I was thinking considering the cinnamon and Anaheim chilies additions. Not very pale, more of a deep russet ruby like color going on with tan head forming thick, body slightly clouded with minimal yeast suspension floating. Head forms nice full intricate layered lacing levels. Really nice beer poured into my Stone RIS chalice that has somehow survived almost ten years of beer drinking. The cap reads a malt advocate magazine quote..."Stone Brewing defines the American craft brewing spirit", I'll agree with this since they have been one of the early trendsetters and continue to release things that break trends like their West Coast mild. I'm amazed that the Anaheim chilies don't flame me out either in my nares or the palate. Aroma has a great spectrum of fruit layers (apple/raisins) heavily ripened with natural sugars, like an earthy dubbel glazed with cinnamon spice and a full peppery finish. The first sip provides a wave of juicy caramelized malts and ripened fruit (prunes/dates/cherry)...with some spicy/hatch chilie pepper/spicy cinnamon stick ground bitterness in the finish. Not much heat as I mention spicy it really is well blended and doesn't kill the palate. A bit of astringency creeps in as a nutty/earthiness possibly from the yeast or the pepper seeds that really sets the smooth malt ride off it's path of glory. Complex interesting ale with sturdy smooth creamy carbonation and medium bodied ale with enough texture and dry finish to make it approachable with each sip. Overall Stone continues to make a more balanced chilie beer than I've tasted thus far, that's comparing a handful of experiences from Left Hand, Wynkoop, Rogue, Crazy Ed, and Great divide.

This beer pours a light borwn colow with a thin tan head. The head fades slowly, leaving a decent ammount of lace.

This beer has mild cinnimon aroma, with a slight chile aroms as well. I can detect some spice. Coriander, and allspice. It has an earthy yeast aroma as well.

This beer tastes just like it smells. Some cinnimon and chile. Also some spices. It is all rather mild.

This beer is crisp and well carbonated. It leaves a cinnimon like aftertaste. The alcohol is well hidden in both the aroma and the flavor of this beer.

The beer might not make a decent session beer. It is too high in alcohol. The flavor is good though.

Overall: This beer is pretty good. I like that there have been more chile beers that taste good.

Appearance deep amber good inch and half head that doesn't last long.

Smell a cross between Belgian saision and Belgian strong. Banana and very strong clove quite muddy on the smell and blends into spicy plum on the mid tongue.

The first taste has a tinge of alcohol on the tongue when it warms up in the mouth you have banana, clove, Belgian yeast and spicy plum many different levels of flavor spice and burn. On the end you have a slite hop and spice chili.

Mouthfeel is quite good it has weight and that part is they must have some flaked barley in this because it is very creamy.

Overall this is much better than last years it is way above the total failure of last years 10/10/10! It looks like Stone is getting their act together in designing new beers for the first time since the departure of their long time brewmaster!

Beer like this is a gamble. With its stately magnum bottle, its limited release, its special date, and its unorthodox flavor pairings, one is compelled to wonder why, if a product is so special and wonderful, it is not a part of wider release? If you've got something really noteworthy on your hands, it seems to me that you'd want to capitalize on that, or at least make sure more people get a chance to try it. When a limited release is capped at a small batch due to a high-cost or hard-to-find ingredient, its specialness is, for many, quickly justified. But when a product is offered in a limited release with readily available ingredients, in a medium that invites large-scale production (beer!), its curious if it has the backbone to support all the fanfare.

Here, our unusual ingredients are Anaheim chilis and cinnamon. Not an unusual combination on its own, but certainly an original twist on a chili beer, especially with the addition of Belgian yeast. The idea doesn't strike me as a "sure thing", but I take the plunge and buy in, based mostly on Stone's excellent reputation, my particular love of their classic Californian, mega-hopped varieties, and my out-and-out worship of mexican food and spicy food in general in conjunction with beer. I've also been known to house an unusually large hot sauce collection, a half dozen in the fridge at any given time, so I seem to be a good candidate.

Pouring into a small wine glass, the head is assertive, leaving impressive lacing and blanketing a rich, mahogany colored ocean of sweet-smelling beer. The Belgian hops make themselves known on the nose right away, building a little excitement. By sight and smell, this is certainly a well-made beer, and it bespeaks Stone's beautiful marriage of art and science.

I dive greedily in, nose down into the glass.

What happens next is less fun.

A round body of sweet Belgian malt, which quite wonderfully provides those iconic citric and musty notes, surrounds a astringent, muddled flavor who's final punchline is: ashtray. Following that, an aftertaste creeps up that takes all the dryness of cinnamon, all the oily heat of smoked peppers, and all the cloying sweetness of Belgian brews, and forces them into an unfortunate boxing match between sickly sweet and abrasively bitter, where no one's the winner and everyone just looks stupid. It's all wrong. Instead of balancing each other out, the two just erase all pleasure from the experience by offering the worst of both worlds. The ultimate lasting impression is having taken a shot of liquor from an ashtray coated in Sweet-N-Low. How's that for a beer review?

I take another sip, this time in disbelief. No, I must have missed something. But reliving the experience only confirmed that not only did I not care for this beer, but that I could not finish it.

Here I should clarify and say that I am not a man too proud to turn down much of anything, let alone to commit the disgusting act of throwing away perfectly good food. But this quite literally turned my stomach, and down the drain it went.

In my estimation, this was made a special, limited release because it was recognized at the factory either as a complete misstep, or as something that would only be enjoyed by a very limited number of people, and could not be sold beyond a few hundred cases. For my sake, I wish it was never released at all. It offers nothing to please the beer lover or the chili-head. I'm sorry to say, avoid. Stone messed up.

S- The rich caramel aroma has some dried chilies to follow with a soft chili vegetable note that lingered.

T- The nice chili flavor blends with a more full caramel flavor that has some woody cinnamon flavor that pokes through as the beer warms. There is gentle chili warmth that lingers. As the beer opens there is some green herbal chili flavor that comes through softly.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with no alcohol heat and a gentle fizz in the finish

O- This beer has a nice caramel malt flavor that is supported by chili and cinnamon. It has just a touch of sweetness making it a nice barleywine with chili and cinnamon. I don’t get any yeast character that would be “Belgian inspired”.

A- This beer pours a deep slightly dense auburn hue with a bubbly creamy light tan head that last a good bit.

S- The aroma of abbey yeast esters and some dark toasted malt takes on a vegital aroma that turns into poblano chillies as it opens up. There are some nice dark candy notes in the finish that remind me of a nice Dubble.

T- The roasted poblano chilies has a soft warmth that mixes with dry cinnamon and some dark malt hints that are a touch on the sweet side. The finish has a hearty pepper heat and hops bitterness that linger gently after each sip.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a full fizz and a warm somewhat hided alcohol heat due to the chile heat.

O- The full chili flavor is more vegital with a soft capsican warmth and is very well balanced with a very soft cinnamon quality that I wouldn't have picked up on if it wasn't on the bottle. This beer has a lot of nice qualities of a Dubble with a chili warmth for support. It paired really nice with winter squash and pot roast. Good balance of flavors.
