Enjoyed this brew at Stone's World Bistro on the release date, the review is from my notes.

Poured a hazy, murky amber brown with a one finger light beige head that faded quickly with light lacing.

Aroma of yeast, malt and some spice.

Taste started slightly sweet with caramel followed by clove and ending with some warmth from the chilli peppers.

Mouth Feel was medium body, medium carbonation, creamy smooth yet slightly sticky.

Overall chilli peppers work well with this beer, they were present yet not over whelming. This is a very nice pale ale.

I also had the opportunity to have a glass drawn from the cask, the chiles were more dominate, making it slightly warmer.

Served in bubble pint glass. Poured a clean, clear reddish mahogany color with just a thin cap of of off-white head that no retention or lacing.

The aroma was very spicy and yeasty with just a bit of underlying grain showing through. The taste was very similar, just a lot bigger and bolder. Grain was the base with that funky comb of spice and yeast dominating the tongue.

The body was good, somewhere less than full yet more than medium. Drinkability was good, if the distinct taste suits your palate, but I probably wouldn't have two in row. Overall, this beer is hard to describe, which explains why this review is so vague. This a must try when you see it, and maybe you'll be able to describe better than I can.

After looking at a few other reviews, I didn't pick up any of the chiles or cinnamon other reviewers mentioned. Certainly a unique beer, but I don't think it will age well, I suggest drinking it fresh.

Had this on tap at The Petrol Station in Houston, review from notes.

Poured a hazy burnt amber with no head.

Cinnamon, bananas, clove and chiles make up the aroma. Very interesting. The chiles give it a certain Sex Panther quality... stings the nostrils (in a good way).

Taste follows the nose for the most part... Cinnamon, bananas and chiles dominate the palate. Cinnamon and bananas right of the back with the chiles making up the back end. This beer is complex as all hell. The flavors are all very distinct but they work extrememly well together. Very tasty.

Medium bodied with a copious amount of carbonation.

I will admist that this is the absolute worst sounding beer I've ever had... Cinnamon, bananas and chiles sound like a clusterfuck of a beer but this beer makes it work. Just like an onion, this beer has some serious layers and they are all delicious

On tap at When Pigs Fly in Kittery. In a pint glass the beer was a red/orange/brown color with a small tan head.

Sweet malt and spice aroma. Warming in my nose.

The tastes worked well together. Caramel malt and clove. Chile present, warm, pleasant.

I enjoyed this beer. Nothing over the top, just a nice melange.

Will drink this again.

Poured into a pint glass as When Pigs Fly. Pours a muddy brown color with roughly a finger of of beige head.

Hints of spiciness in the aroma with some fruit and a belgian yeast aroma. A little peppery on the aroma. The flavor is real nice. Good rich malts with a fruity raisin/plumb aroma with a little bit of an after burn to finish it off.

Nice medium body here with good carbonation. Nice lingering flavors.

Overall pretty tasty. Good amount of chili's to give it a good complimenting flavor.

On-tap at Kelly Korner Tavern in a shaker pint. On to the beer:

Looks brownish amber in color with a small white head which leaves spots of lacing around the glass. There are a lot of chili peppers in the nose, and just when you think it's one-dimensional, out comes a fruity Belgian yeast character that hits the spot.

I anticipated a really spicy beer, and while the spice is there, it doesn't kill your paalte. In fact, it's quite complimentary to the Belgian yeast characteristics. Dark fruits like plums and raisin, also some unsweetened chocolate. There's little (if any) sign of the alcohol, which at the time I suspected was just under 8%, not the listed 9.4%.

To my surprise, I liked this quite a bit.

11/19/2011

On tap at Stone.

A: Reddish brown with a finger of beige foam. Solid retention and a little lacing.

S: Pronounced clove and cinnamon. The pepper smells pretty nice. The yeast smells like cotton candy and bubblegum. I don't really like this yeast. I also get banana.

T: Strong clove-like phenols and banana with evident cinnamon. The chilis really don't go well with this Belgian yeast. It creates a medicinal harshness that makes me want to grab mouthwash. The chili is at odds with the clove-like phenols and bubblegum banana esters. Not a pleasant combination. The finish is the worst, and it really lingers.

M: Medium body with upper moderate carbonation.

Overall: One of the worst Stone beers I've had.

From 11/15/11 notes. Had on tap at Fireworks in Arlington, VA at their Stone steal the pint night event. Poured in a 10 oz. tulip.

a - Pours a dark amber color with two inches of off white head and moderate carbonation evident. Looks pretty good.

s - Smells of cinnamon, bready malts, nutmeg, Belgian yeast, spices, bananas, and cloves. Quite Belgian-ale like, with cinnamon at the forefront. Pretty nice, no chiles to be had here though.

t - Tastes of chili peppers, spices, cinnamon, bready malts, toasted malts, burnt malts, and light fruit. Peppers are definitely present in the taste and aftertaste. I didn't think it was bad at all, though a step down from the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Doesn't feel like 9.4$ ABV, though a sipper due to the chili and spices in the aftertaste.

o - Overall an interesting beer. I didn't think it was bad at all, though a 10 oz. glass was enough for me, so couldn't see putting down a bomber of this. Nose is very Belgian ale like fused with cinnamon, while the taste has the chile peppers, so guess they got what they were going for. I'll pick one up for the vertical.

On Tap

Stone Brew Co.
Escondido, CA

A deep auburn bordering on caramel brown with a thin light brown head.

The aroma is a strange combination of tangy Belgian yeast, caramel malts, a bit of banana, and a very mild, earthy chile presence. They don't seem to blend particularly well together, though on paper I know it doesn't sound all that bad. Maybe it's the cinnamon's fault?

The flavor is just as confused as the aroma. The Belgian yeast is dominant along with a sweet banana flavor, some cracked black pepper, and just a hint of chile warming lingers. On paper, it doesn't sound that bad, but it really wasn't at all enjoyable.

Medium to thick bodied with moderate carbonation.

A mess. I struggled through my 8oz. and didn't finish the glass.

On tap on 11.12.11 at Flying Saucer in Cordova TN

Poured with barely any head, might have been the way the taps were set up, other then the nitro brews I didn't see any beers with a head on them leaving the bar. Dark red/brown in color.
Smells spicy sweet, not overwhelming but very good.
First sip was awesome, banana and peppers, with a nice burn at the end. I really didn't get any hints of cinnamon at all but the pepper came through nicely. Sadly, I took my time with this brew and about halfway through the glass it became a drag, as it warms up, it loses the heat and becomes too yeasty sweet for me.

We hope to find a bottle of this to age, the store we stopped at was already sold out, I think this beer will age nicely, it's already nicely balanced but I'd love to see what happens when the peppers mellow out.

Poured into pint glass.

Appearance: dark brown with golden hues. Pours about a finger of off-white head that quickly fades. Minimal lacing.

Smell: malty, cinnamon, hint of chile, estery, cloves.

Taste: cinnamon up front but not overpowering. Malty/sweet in the middle. A hint of chile comes through towards the finish along with banana and cloves. Candi sugar is also present. The chile presence definitely increases as the beer warms.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, moderate carbonation, a hint of heat from the chile and the subtlest bit of astringency.

Overall: the mildest chile beer I've ever had. The cinnamon and chile are very subdued. The banana and clove from the Belgian yeast are much more prevalent. Drinkability is pretty high and the nearly 10% ABV is well hidden.
