I bought two twelve-ounce bottles of this at Hi-Time in Costa Mesa. The second bottle had lots of floaties in it, though this doesn't especially bother me; other than the floaties in the second bottle, my review here is based mostly on the first bottle. The color is a pretty medium-dark-chocolate brown. True to its name, this beer is not black. The smell is toasted bread and hops--very nice even if not super strong. The mouthfeel is also very nice: fluffy-creamy in the middle and exceptionally dry in the finish. The adjective that kept coming to mind, both to describe the dry mouthfeel finish and a certain aspect of the taste, was "dusty." The taste is lovely brown: caramel, toast, grain (like wheat and oats), plus malted barley, of course. For me, this beer is definitely notable among the dark/black IPAs that have been popular lately. It is different enough that I would love to see the recipe become a regular for Stone.

12 oz bottle received as an extra. Can't recall from whom, sorry...
Body is opaque brown with a huge frothy tan head. A little muddy, or I might have rated higher here.
Nose is crisp, clean hops, with a musty maltiness on the finish.
Flavor immediately blows away the memory of a muddy appearance. This is a crisp, clean citrusy/ piney IPA. As a big fan of both the Alchemist and Stone, I get hop character from both brewery's characteristic styles. (Can't say about Ninkasi). Malt contribution is here, but not in a big way. I expected less hops and more malt, given the style and the age of this brew, but it just isn't so.
Mouthfeel is medium, high carb, and lightly tooth-stripping.
Overall, a very nice brew. This one sat around my on-deck fridge for far too long, but was still a great contribution to a quiet Sunday afternoon.
