Enjoyed from the bottle at Bottlecraft in San Diego.
Dark roasted cocoa bean in color with a thin but bubbly head. Very sticky, but not enough head to leave whole rings on the glass. Floral, sweet, grassy hop aroma with sweet chocolate/dark caramel lying in the background. Dark coffee, bitter grassy hops, and thin caramel flavors. Hops lighten and thin out the dark brown malt, but don't take over completely. Malt is still the most prevalent taste. Balanced feel, this is very drinkable for a dark ale.
This has a distinct aroma of Stone IPA with a dark malt bill set as a backdrop. This is a very good beer, but a story set in another city is still the same story, so I'm glad the malt is so distinct. This is the first beer I've had that distinctly tasted like coffee without this fact plastered all over the bottle. Its malt is subtly complex, which I like.

12 oz bottle received as an extra. Can't recall from whom, sorry...
Body is opaque brown with a huge frothy tan head. A little muddy, or I might have rated higher here.
Nose is crisp, clean hops, with a musty maltiness on the finish.
Flavor immediately blows away the memory of a muddy appearance. This is a crisp, clean citrusy/ piney IPA. As a big fan of both the Alchemist and Stone, I get hop character from both brewery's characteristic styles. (Can't say about Ninkasi). Malt contribution is here, but not in a big way. I expected less hops and more malt, given the style and the age of this brew, but it just isn't so.
Mouthfeel is medium, high carb, and lightly tooth-stripping.
Overall, a very nice brew. This one sat around my on-deck fridge for far too long, but was still a great contribution to a quiet Sunday afternoon.
