Live tasting poured from 12 oz. bottle into a tulip.
Appearance; pours a deep dark brown, a beautiful rootbeer color, one and a half fingers of lush khaki foam, retention is moderate, coats the glass on the way down.
Smell; a marvelous smorgasbord of citrus, lemon peel, pineapple, grapefruit, hints of pine and resin.
Taste; tons of great citrus, lemon, orange and grapefruit peels, hints of pine and resin, none of the expected malt or bread characteristics... Just enough bitterness on the finish without burning the tongue or the palette...
Mouthfeel; silky smooth, with much more body than expected.. Carbonation is perfectly complimentary to the flavors and mouthfeel of this brew.
Overall; an outstanding IPA, the only characteristic shared with other "black" IPA's being color, as this is a full bodied full flavored IPA with none of the negative characteristics of "black" IPA's... Absolutely a beer worth checking out!!

12 oz bottle received as an extra. Can't recall from whom, sorry...
Body is opaque brown with a huge frothy tan head. A little muddy, or I might have rated higher here.
Nose is crisp, clean hops, with a musty maltiness on the finish.
Flavor immediately blows away the memory of a muddy appearance. This is a crisp, clean citrusy/ piney IPA. As a big fan of both the Alchemist and Stone, I get hop character from both brewery's characteristic styles. (Can't say about Ninkasi). Malt contribution is here, but not in a big way. I expected less hops and more malt, given the style and the age of this brew, but it just isn't so.
Mouthfeel is medium, high carb, and lightly tooth-stripping.
Overall, a very nice brew. This one sat around my on-deck fridge for far too long, but was still a great contribution to a quiet Sunday afternoon.
