12oz bottle into a Sam Adam's perfect pint glass.
Brown is the operative word, as this Black ale pours with a cola color with caramel edges. I was careful on the pour, and saved the last 1/2oz or so, but still got tons of chunks floating about. Head is a mottled khaki and leaves a bit of lacing. The aroma, simply put, is out of this world good. A tiny hint of orange zest opens the way, followed by a torrent of floral and fruity hops, milk chocolate malty sweetness, and herbal mint.
The flavor tries its best to follow suit, but is ultimately a letdown compared to the nose. Still, it's a very tasty Black IPA, with a herbal, medicinal-like hop bitterness and a backing of chewy, dark malts. Above average mouthfeel--a bit on the thin side--but nicely carbonated and finishes clean for the style. All in all, this is a tasty little collab between some heavy-weight breweries. I just wish the flavor had as much "Heady Topper-ness" as the aroma did...

12 oz bottle received as an extra. Can't recall from whom, sorry...
Body is opaque brown with a huge frothy tan head. A little muddy, or I might have rated higher here.
Nose is crisp, clean hops, with a musty maltiness on the finish.
Flavor immediately blows away the memory of a muddy appearance. This is a crisp, clean citrusy/ piney IPA. As a big fan of both the Alchemist and Stone, I get hop character from both brewery's characteristic styles. (Can't say about Ninkasi). Malt contribution is here, but not in a big way. I expected less hops and more malt, given the style and the age of this brew, but it just isn't so.
Mouthfeel is medium, high carb, and lightly tooth-stripping.
Overall, a very nice brew. This one sat around my on-deck fridge for far too long, but was still a great contribution to a quiet Sunday afternoon.
