Bottleworks 13th Anniversary Ale pours dark brown, almost black, with a massive, thick, creamy tan head. The foam dissolves slowly leaving a fair amount of lace on the glass.
The aroma isn't as strong as I thought it might be, but it's loaded. Lots of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, dark fruit and an earthy nuttiness. Some medicinal alcohol is also present.
Each sip of this full bodied beer is very smooth and creamy with mild carbonation. The flavor is full of rich chocolate and roasted malt. Mixed in are notes of dark fruit (plum), nuts, coffee, orange citrus, and pine. It finishes with some grassy bitterness and alcohol. Once gone the chocolate, dark fruit and grassy bitterness lingers on the palate.
For an 11% beer this is quite drinkable. Loaded with flavors which are more typically found in an Imperial Stout than a Strong Ale.
