On tap at Toronado – San Diego 09/01/13
Served in a goblet style glass

A: Dark cola brown color with a slightly lighter edge. Completely opaque in the glass with a thin retaining khaki cream top that slowly slips away to a thin film leaving some sudsy ribbons and dots clinging to the glass.

S: Smells of rich dark chocolates with a bit of vanilla crème and dark fruits mixed in. I get some light charred oak presence in the nose as well although it is very mellow. Really nice aroma overall with rich chocolate character. Very light on the smoke for me.

T: Decadent rich dark chocolate meets a firm dark fruit filling of figs, plum, and raisin with some vanilla coconut crème layered in. There is a very light woodsy charcoal noted but this is not incredibly smoky by any means. The beer has a surprisingly high amount of perceived bitterness with a nice piney hop presence. The alcohol is not shy here with a warm spicy kick. Very robust with loads of chocolate flavor.

M: The mouthfeel is moderately heavy with an incredibly smooth and creamy texture at first. A high level of bitterness aids to a drying trend with some warming alcohol at the finish

D: This is a delicious Imperial Porter that drinks more like a Stout with some rich chocolate and dark fruit flavors. I didn’t get much smoke flavor which was actually kind of nice and balanced in that regard.

Stoked to get the chance at trying this one. Highly recommended.

Had this on tap at Yardhouse in San Diego. I'm writing the review a day late, but I took some brief notes. Hope this helps someone...

Didn't quite know what to expect, but for a "imperial porter" it was pretty good. Not smokey. The strength was not apparent.

Wish I had some for cave-aging. That said, it was great fresh.

On tap at O'Brien's. Brewed in memory of Danny Williams.

A: Dark brown with a dark red hue. A light brown head lingers atop the liquid. Good retention.

S: Bittersweet dark chocolate with a blend of earth and smoke. Prominent roasted grains. There's some licorice as well. Smoke comes out as the beer opens up but it's never too strong.

T: Earthy and smoky with a firm dark chocolate presence. I get licorice and a little coffee. Strong roasted malt profile. Lower moderate bitterness with some astringency and a whisper of grapefruit. The finish is lightly smoky chocolate and pretty boozy.

M: Upper medium body with upper medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is dry, creamy, and sticky.

Overall: A solid Imperial Porter with a light smoke presence. A touch boozy.

On tap at Haven Gastropub in Pasadena, CA.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a ring of lace around the edges of the glass. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, vanilla, bourbon, and wood. Taste is much the same with a woody finish and a bourbon kick with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with some great aromas and flavors.
