American Double / Imperial IPA |  10.80% ABV

Availability: Summer

Notes/Commercial Description:
We first released this decidedly indelicate beer in 2012, as Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our belovedly bitter Stone Ruination IPA. Stone RuinTen IPA uses the same recklessly hoppy recipe as the 2012 release; only the name has changed, as we plan to unleash this belligerently delicious hop monster upon the public annually from now on. We packed a whopping five pounds of hops into each barrel, and cranked up the ABV to stand up to the hop onslaught. The results are glorious, and we know you'll rejoice in tasting this audacious gem of hoppy splendor once again. You're welcome.

Poured into a brandy snifter. Pours dark orange copper with a large white head. Some tiny bubbles can be seen rising from the bottom and side of the glass. The head dissipates at a moderate pace, leaving some lacing on the glass. The big hop aromas hit the nose first. I pick up the citrus hop aromas, but the pine aromas are much more intense. There's a big caramel malt aroma as well. There is a gigantic hop flavor explosion in the mouth. The piney resin coats the tongue, bringing a large amount of hop bitterness. The citrus flavors come next as do the sweet malts. For the intensity of the hop flavors, this is extremely well-balanced. The alcohol does not come through in the flavor either. The body is full with moderate carbonation. For such a big style, this is dangerously easy to consume. This is an excellent beer that was well worth the hype.

Aroma: Low bready malt aroma. Hop aroma is medium-high tangerine juice, lime peel, orange creamsicle and a little bit of pine overall medium sweet. Hint of alcohol slightly solventy. No DMS, No diacetyl.

Appearance: Light golden with darker highlights. Medium rocky head.

Flavor: Light sweet clean malt flavor reminiscent of bread crusts. Overall sweetness is medium. Hop bitterness is medium, medium-high bitterness in the finish. Hop flavor is medium mostly citrus peel. Alcohol flavor is medium and much more prominent when it warms. No DMS, no diacetyl.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with medium-low carbontion. Alcohol warming is present. Finish is not astringent.

Overall: Big ipa that hides its alcohol well. Some of the hop character is masked by the solventy alcohol. But overall a really well done big alcohol ipa.

Brilliant copper orange in color with excellent clarity. Poured with a thick, cream colored foam that slowly reduced to a wispy cap that left a trace of sticky lacings on the glass. Rip grapefruit, tropical fruit, and sticky sweet malt aromas with floral hop and boozy notes. Medium bodied with subdued carbonation and a slick oily feel. Intense flavor of ripe pineapple, grapefruit, and orange rind with a sticky sweet caramel backbone. Tangy floral hop flavors through the middle that transition to boozy, light pine hop flavors at the end. Finished with lingering floral and pine hop flavors and a definitive booziness. An all time new favorite.

a textbook west coast ipa, a towering beer, a colossus if you will (and oh, you will!). crystal clear, uncommon in big hoppy beer, no hop or chill haze, and just a fluffy white head, far too delicate for the liquid beneath it. pine aromatics fill the room when i pour the bottle out, carbonation creeps up, and fresh cut christmas tree dominates. other citrusy characters are there in the nose too, but this is a resin bomb, somehow clean though, the whole thing is like an ipa i have had a billion times before, just made quite a bitter better than basically all of them. its so creamy at first sip, too gentle for how intense the hops are, and bitterness is only average. its layers of citric and sappy hops, west coast glory, but delicate and drinkable, scary drinkable really for what it is. this is a better first beer than a last beer in a session, and for all the hopped up stuff stone does, this may be their crowning achievement. clean feel and finish, just enough bubbles, and a medium but fresh and lingering body. its a number of paradoxes all wrapped into one neat affordable package. i have been a fan of stone for a long time, but i am now convinced that this is the best of their portfolio. cant believe it took me this long to get into one. wow! an absolute must for the ipa fan, not to be missed under any circumstances. true brewing magic.
